Yes, Meredith, I'm aware of the deadline. I'm dealing with this as quickly as I can.

I met with Stephen and Todd on Friday.  Although philosophically Stephen supports the idea of contracting for support, he's reluctant to consider it on the timeline that we're talking about (starting Summer/Fall 2007).  He's also concerned about some aspects of outsourcing--how much control do we lose over our servers; how much flexibility do we lose; how does the interface with Banner work--which are as far as I can see, not really issues with the way Remote Learner does things, but which will nevertheless need to be clearly nailed down for him not to worry.  Finally, he's concerned about the money.  If it comes from OISS, then that will make things easier, but it's still not clear to me where the hosting portion of the cost will come from.

Mostly, I think, he is concerned about the IT side of things being driven by the faculty support side, and particularly about the timing of the decision.  He doesn't feel comfortable about moving this quickly to decide about outsourcing hosting, and the fact that it is tied to the faculty support question (which, from our last conversation, it seems to be--if both companies provide faculty support only when they host the application).

Finally, as I suspected, he is not at all inclined to go with a fully hosted solution, where we put Moodle on a third party's servers--he is concerned about the costs that we've already sunk into the hardware, as well as the flexibility that we might lose in that scenario.

He's asked me to write up a summary that addresses the pros and cons of hosted solutions, which I'm in the process of doing.

When will you be meeting with Stephen to go over the outsourcing options? Have you (personally) come to any conclusions? We really need to move on this as we only have 2 weeks left in the term.
