It can't.

That is, it can't happen as part of a normal backup and restore process.  It could happen if she restored TO her Winter course from an old version of the course that didn't include the grades, or if she made a backup that didn't include student data, and restored to her Winter course from that one.  It could also happen if she reset the course.  That actually removes student enrollments as well as grades, but the students would be re-added by the automatic enrollment scripts after a few hours had elapsed, and that would explain why the students were in the course without any grades.

All of that said, I'm not sure what happened here.  I'm beginning to think that there were some problems with the database introduced around Sunday or Monday of last week, because a couple of courses have had some very strange problems crop up.  I'll repair the tables sometime tonight to make sure they're OK, but I'm not sure that the problems will thereby be fixed.

In any event, I restored a copy of Sandy's course from an archive from March 24th, and her grades were all included there.
