LANE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
DISTANCE LEARNING DEPARTMENT

Project Background
Lane Community College was awarded an incentive grant from the Oregon Community College and Workforce Development Agency (CCWD) to engage in a pilot project focused around continuous improvement of online classes. The project is based on grant awarded from the U.S. Department Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) to Maryland Online (MOL), a statewide consortium of 19 community colleges and senior institutions. The model is designed to improve the quality of online courses by establishing a peer-reviewed quality assurance certification process.

The goal of our pilot project is to implement this faculty-centered peer review process using the tools developed by MOL and determine how it may be used or adapted for our online courses. The scope of the project involves training up to 50 Lane faculty who are currently teaching or have taught online courses, certifying 20 Lane faculty members as peer course reviewers, and reviewing five Lane online classes. The pilot project will be complete June 30, 2007.

You are invited to attend QM Training session here at Lane.
Tuesday, January 23rd session. The Friday session is currently full. Each session is limited to 25 participants and will run from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm with a 30-minute lunch break. Lunch will be provided.
Please contact Cynde leathersc@lanecc.edu or by phone at 463.5260 by Monday, January 22, 3pm, to register for your training session.

During the QM Training Session
The QM toolset consisting of 40 elements distributed across eight broad standards will be presented. These elements were then incorporated into a web-based rubric and weighted from 1 (important) to 3 (essential). Annotations and multiple examples from real online courses will be provided for each essential element. The QM toolset and process are based in national standards of best practice, the research literature, instructional design principles designed to promote student learning and continuous quality improvement for online courses. This QM Toolset has been shown to positively impact student learning.

Once you have attended a QM Training Session you will qualify to apply to be a peer reviewer and/or may apply to have your online course QM certified. As mentioned above we hope to fund 20 peer reviewers and have 5 of Lane?s online courses QM certified. If you know now that you are interested in either of these options, please let me know and I?ll send you the details and required application forms.
