If you are having students upload a Word file to you, then you need to have 2 windows open at the same time, Moodle/web browser and Word.

Your other 2 options, as I see them are:

Change your assignment type to upload and review.  Students upload their Word file to you as they do now, you type your comments right within their document, then you "review it" (upload it) back to the student.  You still have a place to enter a score for the Moodle gradebook.

I personally use the Online Text assignment type.  Students type their essay in Word, spell and grammar check it, then they copy and paste it into a Moodle "field" to submit it.  (Some formatting is lost, but I have no problem with this).  Then, I have NOTHING to download, I read their work on the screen, which has a comment and score box below (or is it above) their work, comment and score.

Hi Joe.  I just got assigned this Moodle WR 122 class two weeks ago and am still figuring it out.  It's going pretty well, but I have a question.  

Can you describe to me how to see the assignments they send me and write feedback in the feedback screen while I am looking at the assignment?  (Without printing out hard copies and without typing comments directly on the paper?)

I just want to have the paper open in front of me and the feedback box open in front of me at the same time.  I can't seem to make that happen.
