This drives me and all my students crazy too. I looked into this a while back and all I could find was the following response, which would affect everyone:

 	Running 1.63 and this was driving my faculty crazy. Commented out the following lines that look like this:
if (! email_to_user($user, $teacher, $postsubject, $posttext, $posthtml)) {
echo "Error: assignment cron: Could not send out mail for id $submission->id to user $user->id ($user->email)\n";
}

THese are found in the assignment_cron function in mod/assignment/lib.php.

Wow Michelle,
Unique question.  I didn't think you could do that, but I just checked and you CAN.  Create an OFFLINE assignment and make it worth 1 point (since you can't use zero).  Then, if you enter a negative number in the column (Edit Grades tab), it will actually take away points from a student's total points.

As for the emails, can you give me a specific class and assignment to look at?

I posted this to the discussion a couple of weeks ago, but no one replied.  So, I am going to try a different avenue.  First, is there a way to incorporate point deductions as a single element in the gradebook.  The point deduction is for tasks that do not have a specific point values, but for which I deduct points if not completed. Second, how can I set up my assignments and grade book to NOT send emails to my students every time I enter information or just review something.
