It worked! Thank you so much for the speedily-delivered suggestions. I had not realized that one has to insert the text of the link and *then* type the "insert web link" key. About your additional note: I have noticed that the links within the forum posts delivered to personal email accounts aren't active (from my email account, at least). Not too much of a problem. Now, if you are expecting that link to be active in the email that gets sent out to students (say, in your Announcements forum), that is another story. It involves students' personal email accounts, whether they are set to show html or plain text, and simply put, you cannot control that. I assume your original question simply had to do with making an active link appear in a Moodle post. Let me know if that works for you. I am a Mac user at home and school (I also have a PC at school) and have not been having the problems it seems you've been having, so I'm interested in getting them solved for you. When I type in http:// and so on, the address simply stays in stationary form in the "posted post"; it does not convert itself into an active link. I have tried the "insert link" feature on Moodle's toolbar, but that isn't working for me, either. This problem is nonexistent on my LCC office PC. Everything in Moodle works great there. I had hoped to meet with David W. to work on some of these issues, as they appear to be browser-related, but so far a meeting has not worked out.
