Thanks, Joe. I have already been doing some of the things you suggest. I have written orientation material I send to students who don't come to orientation. But I can't do that if I can't reach them. Of course we have the problem of communicating with students who don't have e-mail addresses in ExpressLane or whose address doesn't work.

I was rather hoping we had the course key working so they would have to contact me to get their entry key, like I had to do when I visited the Moodle instructor site a few minutes ago, but I guess not. Thanks again.

I've included the Moodle Administrator on this reply.

Our current set up puts students into your Moodle class if they are registered in Banner, so even if they don't attend an orientation, they still get "in".  Once in, there is little you can do to "block" them from accessing course materials.  I believe a future version of Moodle may address your concern, but until that time, it would be too cumbersome to do a custom fix for your situation.

I have a few more instructor-to-instructor thoughts for you.

Next term, I have an online course and I've "given up" on the mandatory orientation.  I always had lower than expected turnouts, and as you know, the students who need it most are the ones that don't come.  What I will do it to make an audio recording of my orientation and "podcast" it in my Moodle site.  It'll be the very first link they see.  (It will be very similar to the Elvis Presley Christmas Song I'm currently showcasing on the Moodle class for instructors.  Take a look... the control is under the singing Santa.)

Second, you can use the Moodle "participants" list to see whose recently checked in to class and send a Moodle message (which will forward an email) to the students who haven't logged in by a specified time.

Can you tell me if there is any way I can block access to the Moodle course site for students who do not attend orientation and who do not contact me by the start of the term? If not, do you have any suggestions about how I can enforce/encourage participation in orientation and/or communication with me so students can get a good start in my course?
