Beth,

I'm only to happy to answer your questions. I'm cc:ing this to the faculty webmasters, as they may know tricks I'm unaware of.

Point by point:

1) There's no easy way to do this that I'm aware of. You could exclude any assignments that haven't been completed yet (go to Grades > Exceptions; select the assignments whose scores you want to exclude from the center list and all of the names of your students from the list on the left, and click "Exclude from Grading"). This removes those assignments from the calculation of the total score. As assignments get completed, you could then add them back to the calculation by returning to Grades > Exceptions, selecting the names on the right, and clicking "Include in Grading." Clearly, this is a little tedious if you have a large number of graded items involved. I don't know of any other way to do what you want, though. (Webmasters?)

2) If your students are sending QuickMails, their will always be sent to your Groupwise address if that address is marked as active. If they're sending Moodle messages (the Instant Message-like feature), they'll get forwarded to Groupwise provided you've set up your profile to forwarded messages if you're not logged in.

Now, on responding to email: if the student has hidden or disabled her email account in Moodle, or has hidden the address, the message is sent with a no-reply from address so the address isn't inadvertantly made public. So effectively, whether you can respond to a message from Groupwise is under the student's control. All she has to do is edit her profile (she can click on her name, then click the "Edit profile" tab), and for "Email display," choose either "Allow everyone to see my email address" or "Allow only other course members to see my email address." (The address also has to be enabled; "Email activated" must be set to "This email address is enabled.")

Does that clarify things a bit?

David

Hi David,

Hope you have time for TWO more questions:

1) When students view their grades, it seems to show their current point total in relation to the overall point total for the class, which makes their percentages look artificially low. (I hope this makes sense.) Is there a way to set it up and/or for students to see their current grade in relation to the points earned in class so far, not the total class points, so the percentage is accurate at that point in time?

2) When students submit emails through Moodle, they are also sent to my GroupWise email, correct? However, this term, if I responded (in GroupWise) to one of these emails, it seemed to send the email back to Moodle-NoReply (something like that), rather than to the student's personal email account. Is this always the case? Can I set it up differently?

Thanks (again) for any info.
I'm copiing Mary Parthemer, since she'd like your response too, so please reply to all.

Beth,

Thanks for bringing up the refund date issue. The DST issue effected dates for Spring term, and I haven't gone through and changed them all yet.

On adding events to your course calendar: you should be able to

- Click on your course
- Click on the month name in the calendar (e.g., March); that will take you to a new screen
- In the upper right-hand corner of the month display, you should see a New Event button. Click that, and then you can fill in the information about the event.

Are you not able to do this? Are you getting some kind of error message, or are you missing the buttons?
