Ok, thanks. This makes sense. Now the next question. I have my Moodle mail set so messages don't go to my external mailbox. Where will I read private messages that students may send to me inside Moodle?

I don't know where you received the innacurate information.

Moodle does indeed have it's own internal (and external) messaging system.  
Click Participants
Click a student's name
Click Send Message

That is a "internal" Moodle message.  Most students, however, have that message forwarded to their external email address when they are offline and not logged into Moodle.

To message more than one student, Click Participants, click the checkboxes to the right of the ones you want to contact, and click the Send Message pop up at the bottom of the page.

You "can" use this to message the entire class, but I'd recommend using the Announcement forum for that.  That way, whether they check their external email or not, they will have a way to see what you message you "posted" (sent).

It is my understanding that we can use the forums and chats in Moodle, but that we are not able to use the e-mail or messages to communicate within Moodle. Is this correct? In other words in WebCT we used to have the private mail feature and we could communicate with students individually. Can we do that within Moodle? Or do we have to use our Groupwise to communicate individually? Thanks.
