This helps a lot. Thanks very much!

Hi Will,

In general it is okay to open spam, because sometimes in order to determine whether or not something is spam one has to read the email (i.e. a student may have an email address that does not use their name or a professional title, etc.).

Two key things:

(1.) make certain that you have antivirus software and keep it updated
(2.) don't open any attachments if you do not recognize the sender by reading the message

Feel free to let me know if you need anything else.

Happy New Year!

Regards,

-Dan

Is there any danger in opening these? Most of the time I recognize them as spam and delete them without opening, but sometimes I have ambiguous cases. I did open one by accident a few weeks ago and it seemed only to be nonsensical phrases -- are they just searching for legitimate email addresses?

Thanks,
Will
