Dan,
Joe got me straight on the problem. I had four assignments called "Exercises"; it turns out each assignment needs to have a unique name. I didn't know that!
I thank you both for helping me out---it looks good now.

Usually this occurs when an activity, quiz, etc. is hidden and therefore does not show up in the gradebook.  The number of points for a given exercise is set when creating the exercise (the way to update it is to click on the exercise and up in the upper right hand corner, you will see a button that says "Update this exercise" ... about half way down the page, you will find the area to specify the number of points).

As for the showing in the gradebook, I will check on it and get back with you.

Once again, I am baffled by the Moodle grading. When I look at my work in my WR 123 class, everything sems to be in order, but I can't seem to get the students' grades to appear. Also, the number of points available for exercises baffles me--would you take a look and tell me if I've done something wrong?
