Every human being today believes they are entitled to an ever growing list of "rights". Historically, the Declaration of Independence of 1776 states that "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." The Constitution contains the Bill of Rights, ratified in 1788. After the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision, the idea of "separate but equal" was challenged and defeated by using the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1868. African Americans received the "right" to an equal education. Equality has also become a modern day rallying cry, along with human rights.
