Hello students, This is just a quick announcement to check if your email is working correctly. Throughout the term, I will post class relevant messages in the Announcements forum, which will, in turn, email you a copy. If you've received this email, then all is well with your Moodle account and email address. Feel free to login to the class website and get a copy of the syllabus, map handouts, and chapter 10 notes before class tomorrow. http://classes.lanecc.edu See you tomorrow. Hello all, and thank you for your attendance (if you were there) today. Here's quick update. All students should come to class Thursday having read Chapter 10. 10am Morning Students - I failed to handout my Chapter 10 notes printout which you should use as reference while you read the chapter. Please be sure to print yourself a copy from the class website. With a little fix, all students should now be able to make a choice in the Gun Opinion Poll on the class website, and see the cumulative results. http://classes.lanecc.edu By 5pm on Friday, you must have taken the Chapter 10 Computer Quiz enough times to have earned at least a score of 10 (50%). Why wait until Friday? Finally, I have contacted the proper authorities to deal with the technology fixes and "overheated classroom" fix. Let's see how long LCC takes to address the situation. :) Feel free to Moodle message me with any questions you may have before our next class. See you Thursday. Hello all, I am aware that it came as a shock to some students in class today that the computer quiz score for chapter 11 was due yesterday, Monday, by 5pm. Deadlines are clear on the Moodle class site. This policy was clear on the syllabus. I also made this point verbally in class last week. I want students to read the chapter and take the quiz BEFORE we talk about it in class. I want all students to succeed in this class. At great risk to my reputation for holding students accountable for all class deadlines, I will make one exception and accept computer quiz scores of 10 or higher for the Chapter 11 Computer Quiz by tomorrow, Wednesday January 13 at 5pm. For the record, if you look at the Chapter 12 quiz, you will see: Quiz closes: Monday, 19 January 2009, 05:10 PM I am aware that Monday is the MLK holiday and that LCC is closed that day. Regardless, that is the due date. There is also a new poll question to answer by 10am on Thursday. See you Thursday. Hello all, Just a quick reminder to be sure to complete the TWO political polls for tomorrows 10am deadline. Also, you should have also received another email about the Historical Topic Discussion assignment which also begins today and will continue for the next 2 weeks. Be sure to read the directions and come to class tomorrow with any questions. See you tomorrow. Hello students. This is the start of week four of the term. Remember your Chapter 13 Quiz that is due today by 5pm. Nice job so far from the minority of students who have already posted and replied in the Historical Topic Discussion assignment. You will now notice that the assignment has expanded to "part 2". Taking what you learned and discussed from the political cartoons, you are now asked to build on that as you examine more examples of American "history". That's all for now. P.S. Unfortunately, more than 50% of the class has not yet participated in the Historical Topic Discussion which officially began last Wednesday. Your online grade for this ongoing, two-and-a-half-week assignment is MUCH MORE substantial than simply missing a weekly opinion poll. Hello all, As promised by the end of the weekend, I have made the midterm exam study list available in three different formats to you in the Class Handouts folder in Moodle. (MSWord, PDF, HTML) The list is alphabetized and unsorted. I would highly recommend that you attempt to sort/organize/group the terms on the list according to the various people/events/chapters/topics we covered... things like Jacksonian Democracy, court cases, slavery, westward movement, etc. That would be a good "self check" on how well you remember and understand what we've been doing these past four weeks. The terms you least recognize are probably from THIS week's chapter 14 and will be covered in class on Tuesday and Thursday. MIDTERM EXAMS You may take your midterm exam beginning after class, at 11:30am on Thursday, February 5th. All students must complete the exam by 7pm on Monday, February 9th. The exam is in Moodle, BUT it is only accessible from computers in the CEN456 Social Science Testing Lab. Be sure to bring your photo ID when you go to take the exam. The lab hours, posted on the door, are: Thursday 9a-7p, Friday 9a-5p, Saturday 9a-1p, and Monday 9a-7p. Please plan accordingly. There are no makeup exams and this counts for 30% of your grade in this class. Reminder... Take your Chapter 14 quiz by 5pm on Monday, tomorrow. Note: There have been no opinion polls for the last two weeks, in order to let you focus on your Historical Topic Discussion assignment, due Saturday, February 7th by 9pm. I am very pleased with the comments and discussions I have read so far. See you in class on Tuesday. ello all, Just three reminders: #1 Ch 17 Computer Quiz is due Monday at 5pm. #2 Our final Historical Topic Discussion began three days ago. Very few students have posted so far. Since I'll be posting links to the cartoon explanations on Monday, it would be best for you to make your educated guesses before I reveal the "answers". #3 The optional extra credit opportunity is now available under Class Handouts Have a productive weekend. Joe P.S. I'll be in Portland for a conference beginning today, Saturday, and won't return until late Monday evening. I'll try my best to keep in touch and answer my Moodle messages. P.P.S Remember that the LCC Week 8 Deadline is coming Friday, Feb 27th at 5pm. If you don't like your current class grade (which shows correctly in Moodle), aren't doing the class work (online discussions, attendance, quizzes, etc.), or won't be able to put the time in to score a high final exam grade, then please take this opportunity to change your course schedule this HST202 U.S. History course (and/or any LCC course you are enrolled in). Change the grade option to either an AUDIT or a Pass/No Pass. Neither will negatively affect your GPA. You can also drop a course so that your college transcript won't have any record of your attendance or performance in the class. (As always, check with your counselor or advisor first, to see what options you can pursue given your academic program or educational goals.) To make changes, login to ExpressLane at http://www.lanecc.edu Hello all, You should have received an email from the Historical Topic Discussion where I posted the second question and numerous short video clips. Get started right away. We have only four class meetings left, two computer quizzes, one forum, and one final exam left in the term. Have a productive weekend. Joe Hello all, Our last Historical Topic Discussion has come to a conclusion and I will be grading them this week. On Tuesday, I will make the groups "visible" so you can see what the other students in other groups were saying about the political cartoons and the comedian videos. Tomorrow, Monday, is your last computer quiz deadline for the term. Take the Chapter 19 quiz before 5pm being sure you earn a score of 10 (50%) or better. In this last week of class, we will cover the material in Chapter 19 and you should be begin preparing for your final exams. All computer quizzes (chapters 15-19) are open for you to take as many practice attempts as you'd like. Like the midterm exam, the first questions will come directly from these quizzes. Also as promised, you will now find three versions of the same final exam study list under the Class Handouts link in Moodle. (html, pdf, and Word .doc) The list is alphabetized and unsorted. Print yourself whatever version you'd like. I would highly recommend that you begin preparing for your final exam. I suggest that you attempt to sort/organize the list according to the topics we've studied, such as Civil War, Reconstruction, The West, etc. That would be a good "self check" on how well you remember and understand what we've been doing these past 4 weeks. See you in class on Tuesday. Hello all, Here is that email reminder I promised. Three versions of the same final exam study list under the Class Handouts link in Moodle. (html, pdf, and Word .doc) You will take your final exam next week, starting Monday, March 16 and ending Thursday, March 19 at 5pm. We will have two optional Final Exam Review Study Sessions: Tuesday, March 17 at 12pm in CEN402 Thursday, March 19 at 2pm in CEN402 Also, you will now see the Hybrid Course Questionnaire I spoke about in class. I look forward to your thoughtful responses by the deadline . Sorry for this second email in one day. I've made a mistake both in class (on Tuesday) and on my first email announcement to you today (Wed). I was mistaken about the optional Final Exam Review Study Session times. They were supposed to match the official LCC Final Exam schedule. THE CORRECT TIMES ARE: Tuesday, March 17 at 10am in CEN402 (instead of 12pm) Thursday, March 19 at 12pm in CEN402 (instead of 2pm) Hello all, Due to some technical problems I had over the weekend, your final exam will be available starting at 12pm tomorrow, not 9am as was first advertised. I know this will only affect the very few students who plan to take the exam before the optional review session on Tuesday. I apologize for the inconvenience. Those optional final exam reviews days and times are: Tuesday, March 17 at 10am in CEN402 Thursday, March 19 at 12pm in CEN402 If you don't already have it, three versions of the same final exam study list under the Class Handouts link in Moodle. (html, pdf, and Word .doc) Finally, only 22 students of 68 students have completed the Hybrid Course Questionnaire in Moodle in week 10. This is a 1% extra credit opportunity for your grade in this class. I look forward to all of your thoughtful responses by the deadline . Hello all, The last final exam optional review session is tomorrow, Thursday, at 12pm in CEN402. Bring your study lists and maps. Tomorrow is the last day you can take your final exam. The testing lab closes at 5pm, so don't show up any later than 3:30pm, just to be safe. Just over 50 of you still have to take the exam. Tomorrow is also your last day to give feedback in the Hybrid Course Questionnaire and earn 1% of extra credit. Your Moodle grade shows what you currently have in the class... Course Total... at the bottom of the page. The final exam score has NOT been added to this final score yet (whether you've taken the exam already or not). I plan to have the exams scored, analyzed, and adjusted and a final course grade for you on Moodle sometime by Friday evening. I'll send out another announcement, the last one, when I have posted final grades. Good luck. Hello students, Well, the term has come to a conclusion. Final exams are over. The class final exam score average was much higher (9%) than the midterm, as I expected it would be. Due to a couple of awkward questions and test difficulty, all scores were increased upwards by 4%. Final course grades have been calculated and are now available on the class Moodle site. Look for Final Class Grade at the bottom, where you will see your final percentage and letter grade. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that you check your official LCC transcript grades, available next week, by Wednesday, I believe. The Moodle and ExpressLane systems are not "connected" for grading, so it is possible that data entry mistakes could occur, although I believe I've been very careful. Enjoy your Spring Break. Sincerely, Joe Escobar
