Thank you for the kind words. I do indeed try to make this a worthwhile class. I find it easier to do in classes that meet face to face. Often, I never get to know my online students well. But I will certainly look at the overall feedback and make some changes with the thoughtful suggestions that I've received from students. I see just one post. Nothing by the Wed soft deadline. There should be plenty of posts and replies to other students by tomorrow's Saturday deadline. The 2nd journal entry sure was brief. You mention losing work. I hope you are typing your work in a word processor and saving it. After grammar and spell checking it, you copy and paste it into Moodle. There is no losing work that way. Let me know (today, Wednesday) if you still want it. I'll also send a Moodle message. Joe Joe Escobar [06:54 PM]: HST195 Vietnam War Online class Saturday, 3 October 2009 Mikco Stiner [12:40 AM]: Just wondering if I could have an extention on the Patriot Journal Entry because of my late regiseration? I just got my books Friday and have another class that I had been trying to get into that just informed me I there was an opening. So I'm trying to catch up in both classes. Let me know. Thanks, Mikco Joe Escobar [12:14 PM]: I'm just making sure you read the syllabus about late work. Late registration is an extenuating circumstance... actually, the only one that will be acceptable. :) When would you like your own "new" deadline to be? Sunday, 11 October 2009 Mikco Stiner [02:00 AM]: Just finishing up all my catching up in the classes that I was let into after school started. After this week I will be caught up in both classes. I just got my videos this week which I needed to be able to do this weeks assignments. I also had to get Biology materials because that was another class I was on a waiting list for, and lucky enough to get into as well. So all of my catch up work will be done if you except the last two posts. Wed. forum for watching the videos and Sat.replies (which will be done tomorrow if allowed). I have the Determining The Truth Discussion done on paper waiting to submit, although understandably because of the deadline rule there is no way to post it late. I understand if it is not excepted. I'm just extreamly overwhelmed trying to catch up in both classes while still meeting the deadlines in all the others with the two little ones pulling at my legs. That's why I'm up at 1:45 still doing homework. I'm tired but it's peacefull. =) So please let me know, I will be looking out for your response. Thanks again, Mikco Joe Escobar [01:48 PM]: The only deadline we were talking about extending (when I sent you a message on Oct 3, the first assignment deadline day) was the Patriot Journal deadline (1st week) and it seems that you were able to make that deadline anyway. The Episode 2 Forum was a second week activity that involved student interaction, so that one can't really be made up. Mikco Stiner [03:48 PM]: Ok that is fine. I did the first part of the assignment anyway so I know the material. And am now caught up in my other class. It just takes a little while when you get registered late and then have to get the materials after that. Thanks anyway, I look forward to what new and exciting things next weeks reading intails. Mikco Sunday, 18 October 2009 Mikco Stiner [12:22 AM]: I thought our deadline was sunday just like all of my other online classes and I just tried to submit my journal entry. I cant afford to lose two assingnment in this class. I'am not this kind of student. I have just printed out the deadlin list and now see that it is always saturday and won't make the same mistake again. Here is my journal entry if you would please accept it. I'm really a good and organized student I don't understand what has happened to me. I guess my assumtion was not a good thing. Journal Entry The story that was most dissapointing to me was the story of Luyen Nguyen,a "lost commando". He was treated disrespectfully by the men (soilders) that were under his command yet when push came to shove his men insisted he be by their sides on their mission. They black mailed him in a way saying that they wouldn't go without him, they would desert the mission. Even though he knew that the people before him didn't return he was confidant in his ability to bring them back. Via helecoptor they landed between Vietnam and Laos with a total of 15 men. They were dropped in wearing all black which could not properly camoflauge them in the jungle. All of these things dissapoint and upset me. Why were our men not properly outfitted? We had the means. They would have had a better chance of surviving if they had the prper attire. After a month they were taken as prisoners. Luyen was imprisoned for 21 years and 11 of them were solitary confindment, in a dark cell with shackles on his ankles. The most dissapointing part for me besides him going when he didn't have to knowing he had a family and what the odds were, was when he had a chance to write his wife but chose not to because his family already thought he was dead and he didn't want to cause more pain and tears. If he did write to her maybe the next sequence of events would not have happened. This frustrates me very much in his not writing. Since he made the choice not to write she eventually remarried and had a child with her new husband. The good that I have found is in this same story, after 21 years of imprisonment and the war ended he was released. His wife was informed that he was still alive and divorced her current husband and awaited the return of Luyen. When he left home he left behind a wife and young children now to return to no longer having children but adults with children of their own, he may have missed his own children growing up but he would be able to see his grandchildren grow.In a sense it is a kind of love story for me. As soon as she heard word of Luyen still being alive she divorced her husband to await the return of the man that she had loved and longed for all those years, and now she could be with him once again. Thursday, 3 December 2009 Mikco Stiner [01:09 PM]: I know that you do not accept late work but my circumstances have been overwhelming. This last weekend my husband of ten years and highschool sweet heart left me and our 4 and 5 year old boys. I've had a hard time dealing with it but cannot afford to fail this class. I already have a Zero from starting the term late and my poor testing score. I've lost track of days during all of this and have been trying to pull myself together. Please just under this one circumstance let me make it up, it is not to late for other students to be able to reply to my post. Thanks, Mikco Joe Escobar [02:38 PM]: I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Go ahead and make your posts and replies. Mikco Stiner [03:40 PM]: Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. =) Mikco Monday, 7 December 2009 Mikco Stiner [04:08 PM]: As you know I told you that I really cannot afford to fail this class. Now that I'am on my own without my husband my school money is my only means to support myself and two children. So I was wondering why on forums 6 and 7 I only got a 68%? It just seemed really low to me. I posted and participated in discussion. Just wondering, not questioning your teaching or grading abilities by all means. I jut thought I did well, or at least better than below a C. Thanks for listening, Mikco Paul Slaughterbeck [03:04 PM]: Joe, I really enjoyed your class (both content and format). Feel free to use the essays I wrote as future examples, if you wish. I may hit you up for a letter of recommendation if you are comfortable with that at some point. Jennifer Mosier [06:12 PM]: Sorry it took me so long to respond to your request. You can use my paper as an example I don't mind at all. Matthew McIntosh [09:28 PM]: I can not view the sample video, is that going to be a problem? Joe Escobar [09:59 PM]: Yes. Be sure to try it out at an LCC computer tomorrow either before or after class, so you can prove that the problem is with your home computer. The SHeD (student help desk) may be of help. http://www.lanecc.edu/icl/shed.htm Barbara Dunphy [12:21 PM]: Mr. Escobar, I am having a problem watching the video clips. When I click on them to play I get a pop up error that says there is an error with a plug in> I don't know what that means or what to do about it so that I can see the clips. I need the clips to help me understand the cartoons because I am having trouble interpreting them. Joe Escobar [12:26 PM]: It sounds like you may be using either a very old computer or one which does not have Quicktime installed on it. First suggestion is to try another computer, at LCC, local library, neighbor, etc. Second, download and install Quicktime for your computer here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ Joe Escobar [12:26 PM]: Another thought...Were you able to see the movies clips from the first discussion forum? Joe Escobar [02:02 PM]: The Episode forum had two deadlines, one being on Wednesday and the last being on Saturday. Both of your brief posts came within an hour of the deadline, so, of course, any real online "discussion" was lacking (and would be reflected in your score). Michael Bellamy [03:03 PM]: Hey I'm honored that you would consider that and of course you can do whatever you like with it, I'm not at all protective about any of my work. Michael Bellamy [02:31 PM]: Hey I am happy to let you use my work with whatever you need, I don't mind one bit. These are the DVD's http://www.shoppbs.org/product/index.jsp?productId=1817567 Your choices, as I see them, are: You can contact the LCC distance learning department and/or library ask if they can send you the sent in the mail You can rent them from a local Blockbuster in Bend You can buy them (available from PBS online, eBay, Amazon.com, etc. Joe Escobar [11:51 AM]: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0001WTWOC/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&qid=1254336546&sr=1-1&condition=used If LCC requires you to pay some sort of shipping fee, and costs get close to $40, consider buying from one of the links above. Too bad gas costs so much. With my truck, it would cost that much for gas (let alone my time) to make a trip back and forth from Bend to Eugene. Joe
