Picture of Alicia Elfring Alicia Elfring FromTo me Joe Escobar Tuesday, 29 September 2009 Alicia Elfring [08:47 PM]: I have a few questions. First, the video posted online, I do not currently have sound connected to my computer and I am using dial up. It takes forever to up-load anything. Im assuming there is sound and I was going to see if I could watch it in the libary with head phones. Are we to have watched it before thursday? Second, the Point of view homework, is it just to read or is there questions to go along with it? I think that is all for now. Thanks Alicia Wednesday, 30 September 2009 Joe Escobar [09:26 AM]: Alicia, Yep, there is sound. Bring a set of headphones to any LCC open computer lab (library included) to watch these video clips. This one is short and on Chapter 1 material. The main purpose of the clip is to check and make sure all students CAN watch the videos. They will be required for future classwork. As for the handout, just read it and take notes/highlight. No questions to answer... yet. :) Alicia Elfring [09:25 PM]: Thanks alot. I will be prepared in class on Thursday Saturday, 3 October 2009 Alicia Elfring [08:29 PM]: Alicia again, Is the opion poll only one question? It just sounded like it would be more than that. Joe Escobar [09:29 PM]: The opinion poll was the one easy question. The point of view forum requires a bit more. Did you do that assignment also? Alicia Elfring [09:45 PM]: I did. I read the chapter, took the quiz, answered the opion poll, and also did the forum. Im sitting pretty good for the weekend in terms of homework. I might get one free day! See you Monday. Joe Escobar [09:48 PM]: Yep, I just read your post. Nice job. Sunday, 4 October 2009 Alicia Elfring [05:55 PM]: Thanks. Wednesday, 7 October 2009 Alicia Elfring [10:42 PM]: Hello, I can get to the page that says download the web comic and when I click on it another window pops up and it says loading, I left it doing this on my computer for ever tonight and it never went anywhere. I tryed to look at it at lane yesterday at my work computer and the site was blocked. Im going to try another computer at lane tomorow before class, I just wanted to let you know what as going on. And also, Im interested to the book on tape or MP3 player file you have I mentioned it to you in class and you said to message you but I dont know how forsure I would get it from my computer to me MP3 player My computer doesnt have alot of the ports to hook into. I will bring my cord for My MP3 player and my flash drive and maybe we can do something tomorow before class or after. I have a geology field trip on saterday in central oregon and I thought it would be nice to be able to listen to the chapter insted of trying to read on the bus. This is alot of info sorry. anways I will be on campus for work at 9am and will check for messages. thanks a ton alicia Thursday, 8 October 2009 Joe Escobar [09:32 AM]: Sure. After class today works for me. You can also try it yourself. Here is the info: https://teach.lanecc.edu/escobarj/201/audiobook/01.mp3.zip username = 01 password = 01 Change all "01's" to "02's" in the URL and login to get the next chapter. And so on. Alicia Elfring [08:30 PM]: well I was having really good luck I thought.I found the cord to my MP3 player and I put my flash drive into the computer and transphered the chapters to the desk top and it worked I was really proud of myself. The I pluged in my MP3 player and tansphered the chapters over into that drive and thought I was good and everything was working, but when I tryed to find the chapters on my MP3 player and listen to them they wernt there. I cant seam to figure it out. I tried to go through my phone because I have a cord that hooks my phone to the computer too and it didnt work either. I also tried my camera via cord them menory card and cant seam to get it to work either. I think its just me and my inexperience. I was wondering if you were able to help me tomorrow i have a break between 9 and 10 or after 1. It would be really great I bring what I have and maybe we can figure it out. Thanks Alicia Friday, 9 October 2009 Joe Escobar [09:26 AM]: Hi Alicia, I just read this note at 9:20am or I would have gotten back to you sooner. Unfortunately I'm in meetings for most of the day today and can't get away to help you. It sounds like you did things correctly. Exactly where did you transfer the mp3 files to your mp3 player. I'm guessing that you may have a folder in your player named "Music" or something like that. Perhaps the mp3 files might have to be INSIDE that folder in order for your player to play them. Plug in your player to your computer. Open it up and see if there are folders inside your mp3 player. See if the textbook mp3 files are "just inside" the mp3 player, but not inside the Music folder. Drag the mp3 files into the Music folder. Then see whether your player "finds" them so they can be played. Hope this helps. Joe Escobar [09:28 AM]: Oh, and one other check. Visit the student help desk/computer lab in Health 201 building. It is an open computer lab for students. They should have 2 to 4 staff members (behind desks) that are there to help students. Bring them your USB drive (where I put the files yesterday for you) and your mp3 player and cord. They should be able to do it for you. Joe Escobar [09:32 AM]: And one final thought if the student help desk can't help you. (They should be able to... don't let them get away with any excuses... tell them the mp3 files are not songs but textbook materials you NEED for class on Monday !!!) You can go to the Academic Technology Center, ATC in Bldg. 19 Rm. 249. This is normally a place where faculty go for help, but if you say I sent you there, and the fact that you need these mp3 files for your Moodle class, they should also be able to help. I hope you have your USB drive, mp3 player and cable with you. Good luck. As you can tell, I really want this to work for your long trip this weekend. Alicia Elfring [02:48 PM]: thank you so much. I did put the files into the music folder. i dont know whats wrong but in going to check out the places that you mentioned and see if they can help. again thanks so much. Alicia Joe Escobar [02:50 PM]: Okay, if they are inside the Music folder, you can TRY moving them OUT of it (so they'll be listed along right next to it). I've seen a case or two where that will work. Keep me posted. C'mon LCC help desk staff... come through for us. :) Alicia Elfring [03:28 PM]: Well The help desk staff wasnt very helpful but the nice gentalman nest to me wa able to help and they are writing to my MP3 player right now. Thanks so much. It turns out that the files were on my flash drive twice and the first set wa corrupt. the second set transphered over nicely. Joe Escobar [04:27 PM]: Terrific, and sorry to hear about the lack of help at the help desk. They really are supposed to help students with any technical problem. I've been told they help students troubleshoot their home internet cable or DSL connections, so this should have been a walk in the park for them to fix. Alicia Elfring [08:58 PM]: He tried to help but couldn't figure it out. I glad it worked anways. I listened to part of chapter one today on the bus. just to refresh. Its all set to go for the big travel tomorow. thank you so much for you help. And just a side question not a big deal, is there anyway to put them on my mp3 in smaller anounts of time, maybe brake the chapters up into 15 min sections. I dont have fast forward, therefor I have to listen to a whole hour long chapter at a time. Theres no way for me to skip ahead and start where I last left off. No big deal if not the majority of the time I will be reading it anyways, just wondering. Joe Escobar [09:22 PM]: I'd have to break the files up myself. It's not something that I'd do for all students, but certainly could if my suggestions below don't work. All mp3 players are different. On my mp3 player, if I am in the middle of a long chapter and just shut down/off my mp3 player, the next time I start it up, it will start at that very point. Give that a try. The other thing would be to try the pause button first, before shutting down, and then seeing if that would work. Let me know, and have fun tomorrow. Saturday, 10 October 2009 Alicia Elfring [07:43 PM]: The trip was great, long but fun. I will try the pause thing and see if it works. I never pay atention when I turn it on if it comes on at the same spot where I turned if at but maybe. Anyways thanks alot and I will see you on monday. Thursday, 22 October 2009 Alicia Elfring [07:27 PM]: I have a few questions reguarding the wiki's. If a member of my group answeres their question wrong or not enclusive enough will each person be docked? Is it my responsibly to check and make sure all answers are correct for my grades sake. I guess Im just a little worried about the "one grade for the group based on the whole product" thing Thanks Alicia Joe Escobar [11:11 PM]: It sure will be best to have a single, complete project done by the deadline. I would certainly hope that a group would not let wrong information stand. And you will also have that feedback opportunity. Friday, 23 October 2009 Alicia Elfring [05:53 PM]: Ok. I was just wondering. So I should really look for answers to all five questions so that I can vouch for my group members. Thanks Alicia Joe Escobar [06:01 PM]: Your use of the term "vouch" confuses me. In short, any single student who reads the textbook and the publisher assigned web pages should be able to answer all posed questions. My hope is that the group, somehow, someway, completes a wiki page that answers all questions (in order to earn the highest grade). Does this make sense? Saturday, 24 October 2009 Alicia Elfring [05:25 PM]: It does make sense. Thanks you. I have another question, at what point should I start answering all questions? It's saterday at 5:30 and No onw from my group has posted anything. Im getting the feeling I will be the one who formats our answers into a paper. I dont want to wait until the last min. I posted a message on the page asking them to have their answers posted by saterday and also if they have any sugestions on how to format but I have gotten no answer. I busy all day monday, so I need to have the completed paper done by tomorow night and Im concerned I will have alot of work to do even after all answers are posted. Thanks alicia Joe Escobar [05:27 PM]: Remember that I'll be able to see who did what, so go ahead and do the work. I think I know how you are going to "vote" about this group project on the upcoming survey. I'm sorry about your group. sad Alicia Elfring [05:31 PM]: Its ok. I was just afraid that I would do all the work today and then someone else from my group would get on monday to enter their answer and would be mad that I did it early. so I will start working on our paper. Thanks Alicia Alicia Elfring [09:02 PM]: I have a question. When the book talks about the colonial loyalty to the king and all due subordination to parliament is that refering to the king... in britian? Im having a hard time understanding things in the book. Thanks alicia Joe Escobar [09:04 PM]: Yes. You are understanding this correctly. Prior to the Revolution, most colonists were indeed loyal to the king, even the German Hanover kings (George I, II, III) Alicia Elfring [09:10 PM]: So throught out the stamp act even though the colonist thought it was violating their right to taxations with representation they remained loyal? another question. William Pitt was grenville's brother in law and came before grenville was the treasurer but then he came back durring the townshend crisis to form a government? Alicia Elfring [09:13 PM]: one of our questions asked what position he has. One of the links we have is his speech on the stamp act. I was wondering what position he was holding durring the speech and when it was. If it came durring the violence or after the nullification. does that make sense Joe Escobar [09:19 PM]: Don't get too technical about the turning point of the colonists' loyalty. It certainly is something we have to generalize about. Most colonists were loyal to the crown, even though they began to disagree more and more with the king. Today, Oregon has disagreed with the leaders in Washington DC on issues (such as marijuana) but the anger has never risen to the level of wanting to break away from the United States. Even those who hate/hated Bush or Obama didn't take that next step. I think just the Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin said something about moving to Canada if Bush got re-elected in 2004. He didn't move, and most Americans think his words/threat went a little too far. And yes, Pitt, successful government leader for the British and colonies in the French and Indian War attempted to ease some of the crisis with the Grenville-led government. Alicia Elfring [09:21 PM]: So his speech came after the Stamp Act was over Kinda as a looking back sort of thing? Joe Escobar [09:22 PM]: Look again at the Pitt web page and click the TINY BLUE **** Quote ***** Context links at the top of the text. You'll have your answer. Alicia Elfring [09:24 PM]: Ok thanks I did even see those. So I will have this finished tonight do I have to submit it to you somehow or just leave it and it will close on monday? Alicia Elfring [10:10 PM]: On second thought Im going to get sleep and take a fresh look at it and all my info tomorow. Joe Escobar [10:12 PM]: Good night. Sunday, 25 October 2009 Alicia Elfring [07:16 PM]: Ok so Cameron did get on our Wiki page last night and add her part. Should I work with it and work it into the things that I did to make one continuious paper or leave it seperate as is? Joe Escobar [07:50 PM]: That part is up to you. If it was her job and she did what she was supposed to do, then feel free to remove what you had done. Also, be sure to put the actual questions on your wiki page, so other students in the class will know what is being answered. Alicia Elfring [08:32 PM]: So I formated it in to a essay type paper about the Stamp Act answering all questions that were asked. So should I just list all questions at the begginning? Monday, 26 October 2009 Joe Escobar [09:04 AM]: Yes Alicia Elfring [01:59 PM]: Ok thanks Alicia Elfring [09:12 PM]: You must have closed the wiki's while i was editing. the last time i edited apparently I didnt save because there were a few things that didnt appear when i went to view. sorry my group members waited until last min to post and i was making last min corrections. I still have the edit page up on my screen but it wont let me save it. Joe Escobar [09:14 PM]: Try now Alicia Elfring [09:15 PM]: thanks one sec Alicia Elfring [09:20 PM]: ok i tried and I gota message that says sorry while you edited this page someone else did already save a changes version. please go back to the previous screen and copy your changes to you computers clipboard to insert it again after you reload the edit screen Alicia Elfring [09:20 PM]: what should I do? Joe Escobar [09:21 PM]: try again Alicia Elfring [09:22 PM]: ok Alicia Elfring [09:24 PM]: The changes I made are not there anymore. It would just take a sec to fix them. Want me to? Joe Escobar [09:24 PM]: hurry Alicia Elfring [09:25 PM]: ok Alicia Elfring [09:30 PM]: I just hit save Alicia Elfring [09:30 PM]: I got the same message. I copyed the entire thing first so I have it. I dont know whats going on. Joe Escobar [09:31 PM]: Go ahead and privately email me what you have. Alicia Elfring [09:34 PM]: Its not a super big deal I guess. All the info was there. There were just a few spelling mistakes and some things that I wanted to clairify and also so things that I rearranged. But I have it copied so all I have to bo is paste It into an email Joe Escobar [09:35 PM]: okay Alicia Elfring [09:37 PM]: what is your emial? It doesnt seam to say in syllabus. Is it escobarj@lanecc.edu Joe Escobar [09:47 PM]: yep Alicia Elfring [09:48 PM]: thanks Its all on there I will send it now. Im sorry for the mess. Thank you so much for being understanding. Alicia Elfring [09:50 PM]: I just sent it. let me know if you get it before I get off here. Alicia Elfring [10:14 PM]: Im voting you got it. Im going to bed. Thanks again. nighty night Thursday, 29 October 2009 Alicia Elfring [08:51 PM]: So I know that you are unaware of the times if any you will be on campus. I just wanted to let you know that I get out of class at 12:50 and we be on campus until about 3:30. If you cant be on campus I am ok talking over the phone. I have come across a few questions so far. Mostly things that I think I get but just want to make sure im understanding them correctly. Thanks Alicia Joe Escobar [09:44 PM]: I now know that I will be on campus, so let's meet at 1pm. Friday, 30 October 2009 Alicia Elfring [09:06 AM]: Ok thatnks so much. I ONLY GOT 70.9 THATS AWFULL. Joe Escobar [03:56 PM]: Take it easy for tonight. I need to look at the item analysis and factor in all other grades. I'll explain in class tomorrow. Alicia Elfring [04:00 PM]: Im kinda stressed about it, as you can probably imagine. I have really high standards. I felt completely prepared and ready, even after answering all the questions. I cant believe I got 50% go me Joe Escobar [05:19 PM]: YES Thursday, 5 November 2009 Alicia Elfring [06:25 PM]: I have a question,is there anyway that we can get the study guide or at least the first part of it earlier for the final? I know that it probably means more work for you, if you havent written the test yet. Just somewhere to start, that way there's not 200 vocab words to review the week before the final. Just a question. Thanks Alicia Joe Escobar [08:12 PM]: I'll see what I can do. Friday, 6 November 2009 Alicia Elfring [01:04 PM]: thanks. It would really be a big help. P.S. I didnt mean to sound mean in my last message. After I read it it kinda sounded mean to me. Thanks Alicia Joe Escobar [04:10 PM]: Didn't sound mean to me. I know you well enough by now that you don't have to worry about how you sound to me in Moodle messages. smile Have a good weekend. Sunday, 8 November 2009 Alicia Elfring [06:00 PM]: Thanks. See you tuesday. Thursday, 12 November 2009 Alicia Elfring [10:07 AM]: Im wondering if I can meet with you on tuesday before class for a bit to go over some things and make sure Im understanding them correctly. are you available? Alicia Elfring [10:27 AM]: Another question, on a website that talks about the defination of conservatism, it talkes about the conservative movement and the factions of the movement being traditionalists and libertarians. Am I understand correctally the there were two parts within the conservative party. Im trying to get a basis, And Im just getting more confussed. Alicia Elfring [11:28 AM]: I am behind on the reading of the issue and posting on the form but I dont really understand it. Can I come in to you office today before class Like 12.20? Joe Escobar [11:35 AM]: Sure, Stop by at 12:30p. I have another student here at 12pm, and it should only take 30 minutes. Alicia Elfring [11:47 AM]: Ok Ill Be there. Friday, 13 November 2009 Alicia Elfring [09:22 AM]: Yes that works for me. thanks Tuesday, 17 November 2009 Alicia Elfring [05:17 PM]: When I was in your office today and told you about not making the 10 out of 20 on the week 8 quiz you said something about making those points up. and that you were going to talk more about it in class. I dont remember you saying anything. Are you going to talk about it on thursday or can I know now? Just wondering. Joe Escobar [06:33 PM]: Take a close look at the Moodle weeks and quiz dates. smile ... and yes, I will talk more about it on Thursday. Wednesday, 18 November 2009 Alicia Elfring [04:45 PM]: so we can retake quiz 8 by monday at 5p.m Joe Escobar [05:38 PM]: Yep Monday, 23 November 2009 Alicia Elfring [08:37 PM]: I know Im meeting with you tomorow but while im thinking about it I thought I would ask about the forum. I thought you were grading the week two posts and adding another question and there is not one. Im wondering If were saposed to be still talking about the second one. Saturday, 28 November 2009 Alicia Elfring [08:48 AM]: I have a few questions. first, today is the first time I am able to listen to the part three of the forum. I dont have sound on my computer.( you saud you didnt want someone just posting a whole bunch right befor due date.) Is it ok that all my posts happen today and tomorow and monday? second, I have 10 out of the 25 pts, and in your announcement you said if we were in the 10 to 12 point range you were on track for A + does that mean that I have to post 10 points worth to reach 25 or are some of those points for pertisapating? third, can I meet with you tues. at 12. thanks Alicia Joe Escobar [09:52 AM]: Fine to post today, tomorrow, and Monday. The "25" is just a "placeholder" score. I guess you can say you are shooting for 18 points total for full credit. Tuesday at 12 is fine. See you then. Alicia Elfring [03:24 PM]: ok thanks. see you tuesday at noon Alicia Wednesday, 9 December 2009 Alicia Elfring [11:37 AM]: I'm wondering if you will be on campus ans available today (wednesday) or tomorow before study group. Im taking the final tomorow afternoon and have a few questions? thanks alicia Joe Escobar [01:15 PM]: I'll be in my office at 10am tomorrow (Thurs) before the 12pm study group. Thursday, 10 December 2009 Alicia Elfring [08:56 AM]: Ok I will be there. thanks
