The only module in Moodle which allows for completely anonymous student participation (even though you are logged into Moodle with your L# and PIN) is this Questionnaire Activity, specifically set to anonymous mode, which I have done.
This has been a "hybrid" U.S. History course at Lane. (3 credits in class, 1 credit online, 4 credits total.) As such, I have some specific questions to ask students... questions that are not on the generic teacher evaluations you complete at the end of each term.
I appreciate your giving me honest feedback about this class. In return, students who complete BOTH this survey AND the
survey will earn a 1 percentage point boost to their final class grade.

1. In deciding to take or remain in the class at the start of the term, did you read any of my student evaluations from past terms that were available to you on the website?
|
|
2. Have you used Moodle before this term?
|
|
3. On average how many times a week did you log onto your course?
|
|
4. Did you use the Moodle messaging feature to contact your instructor during the term?
|
|
5. Only if you answered YES to the above question, how would rate the speed of the Moodle message response(s) you received?
|
|
6. Did you ever visit the instructor during office hours or at a scheduled appointment during the term?
|
|
7. Only if you answered YES to the above question, was the experience helpful to your class experience?
|
|
8. Concerning the Announcement forum, which was used about once or twice a week to send class updates to students, how would you rate this element of the class?
|
|
9. Many class materials were "handed out" online (maps, pdfs, audio, video, text, links to websites). How easy was it for you to access these materials?
|
|
10. Do you have any other comments you'd like to make about the online materials?
| 1 | |
| 1 | worked well |
| 1 | easy to find. |
| 1 | I didn't really like having to watch/listen to a professor talk. |
| 1 | I like using moodle. I think more teachers should use it |
| 1 | I love the forum idea I just wish the whole class would be more into the forums and not wait till the last minute to post. |
| 1 | I loved having the quizzes online and how they gave you the answers to the questions you did wrong. |
| 1 | I really enjoyed the videos and topics of discussion. Although I had a hard time getting into the forum groups I didn\\\'t see much value to them. |
| 1 | I really liked the way this class was set up in lecture and online. |
| 1 | I thought the online materials were a good supplement to the textbook and lecture because they really helped me remember some key concepts. |
| 1 | I would have like to seen, the slideshow in class made available online in Moodle. |
| 1 | Its a bit overwhelming at first. |
| 1 | love hybrid courses |
| 1 | Many of the videos were not compatible with my up to date computer. Also, the videos that did work were in an odd format. |
| 1 | no |
| 3 | None |
| 1 | Sort of. I downloaded some of the audiobook, on the grounds that I was having such a good time with all of the other non-book materials that I ought to try another one. It was terrible. I'm pretty sure the publisher just feed the book to Growl, or maybe just a speak and spell. Not a big deal, and I still think it's a good thing to offer, I just wanted to let you know in case you didn't. |
| 1 | The announcment portion, I found to be very important, but I never recieved notices of announcments. I think that there needs to be a pop up or a imformative way to let students know that there is a new or updated announcment. |
| 1 | The online part of the class was fairly easy and helpful. |
| 1 | Well layed out |
|
|
11. Even though students were not required to own their own computers to participate in this hybrid course, how important do you feel it is for future students in this class to own their own internet-connected computer?
|
|
12. In my opinion, certain online assignments were given to provide both a learning experience and a grading "gift" to students. To my dismay, a number of students failed to complete the computer quizzes and opinion polls. Instead of being an easy way to earn 10%-15% of the grade in this class, this "gift" assignment actually hurt some students. Answering for yourself only, can you provide me any thoughts you may have on the matter?
| 1 | If you\'re making it that easy for people to get 10%-15% of the grade and they don\'t do it, it\'s their problem--not yours. It\'s not like it was hard to log on and get at least 10 questions right, especially with the option to retake. Thank you for the "gift", it helped me! |
| 1 | Students are lazy. Some people just don\'t feel the need to click on a link and answer a simple question or take a quiz. |
| 1 | Unfortunately with the hybrid format, sometimes the "out of sight, out of mind" principle comes into play. Yes we are reminded, but I think when many students go home they like to leave school behind. Maybe weekly email reminders on what is due when would help. |
| 1 | |
| 1 | I know I missed some easey assingments but they were my own fault I dont think you could make it any easier to earn the points, maybe let there be late assingments for a lesser grade. |
| 1 | Any student that does not do the easy online assignments is silly. It is a easy part way to earn points, as well as valuable information. |
| 1 | I appreciate the gift, and would go so far as to say that being able to take the online quizzes over and over again helped me learn the material. |
| 1 | I believe I missed one opinion poll and quiz because I wasn't technically in the class yet, but I liked the idea of having the quizzes and poles. Not only was it a way to earn easy points but it helped review the chapters' material. |
| 1 | I did it all so I think everyone should be able to |
| 1 | I don't know why people wouldn't take advantage of the situation other than they're just lazy, or don't log in to see deadlines... or don't show up to class to get reminded of deadlines... |
| 1 | I feel as long as you do the work that is there you will get a good grade. The "gift" is only good if you use it.and it is easy to do as long as you apply yourself. |
| 1 | I have non idea why students would not complete the quizzes. I loved that it was an easy way to get a better grade and I could do it on a time that fit into my schedule. |
| 1 | I love the freedom of not having to get a 100% on the quizzes. And for someone not to take the advantage of that, ....well, too bad. Don\'t worry about them, their fault. It\'s a great system you have going. |
| 1 | I missed the first day of class so I autmatically missed 1% of the grade if I remember correctly. Not a big deal, but I think maybe the "gift" points shouldn't be given on the first day. |
| 1 | I only missed one test and that was because I was in the hospital that day. I can't imagine why people didn't do it. Being able to do the tests as much as you want and you only have to get half of them right. I don't know why people wouldn't do that |
| 1 | I think if a student is going to give up those "gift" points, that is their fault. I really enjoy how easy it was to receive those points. It's an extra little boost to want to do well in the course. |
| 1 | I think it comes down to simple laziness on the students' part, or perhaps they had other obligations that prevented them form completing the "gift assignments". Either way, they are usually simple things to do, and not doing so is simple laziness. |
| 1 | I think it is a great way of earning fairly easy points. And requires that you have basic understanding of the material before coming to class for the lecture. |
| 1 | I think it is easy to slip up with those assignments. They don\'t take long, and so they are easy to forget. Not saying that this is an excuse, but is probably what happened for those students. |
| 1 | I think people forgot or were too lazy |
| 1 | I think that it is absolutly ridiculous that anyone would miss a "gift" assignment... I think it was helpful to have that extra assignment available. |
| 1 | I think the polls and quizzes were a good thing. I certainly appreciated them and thought they were useful. I did miss two but that is because I completely forgot. I really liked them and the quizzes were actually quite helpful |
| 1 | I think the reason why some students did not do them is because of the old adage: out of sight out of mind. Each student had to be organized enough to schedule time to do the online work and I feel a lot of students lack that discipline. |
| 1 | I thought it was a good way to do it. |
| 1 | I thought the quizzes we also a "gift" assignment and were very easy to complete. |
| 1 | I thought the quizzes were a great way to boost one's grade. |
| 1 | i took the quizes every week. They were easy to access and very good way to study. I think the other students were just lazy. |
| 1 | I tried to complete all of the quizzes on time, however, I think I missed one or two because I simply forgot about them. I would finish the readings on Sundays generally and then do the quizzes when I got home from work on Mondays. If it had been a crazy day at work though, or I had a lot to do when I got home, doing the quizzes sometimes was forgotten. |
| 1 | I tried to take advantage of these easy points, and I was very grateful for the opportunity to have that cushion of support. I think I missed one quiz, and I was extremely angry because I knew that it was easy points I was missing out on. |
| 1 | i was sick and spaced the first poll and cost me but made the rest. Its a great gift to have. |
| 1 | If you don\'t do them, they will dramatically impact your grade. |
| 1 | It took a little time to get used to having to be on moodle more than once a week, but really it's up to the student to designate their own time. |
| 1 | It's pretty easy and relavent to the class so I would probably guess the 10%-15% that didn't answer the polls didn't attend class. |
| 1 | It's their responsibility to finish the work. |
| 1 | Maybe some students were knew to a class that used online elements in the class and forgot about the quizzes or maybe they misunderstood them to be optional tools. Other than that I can\'t think of any reason a student wouldn\'t participate in the quizzes or polls. I thought the polls were fun, especially when we went over the results in class and the quizzes were definitely helpful. |
| 1 | Most of the forums asked to give personal opinons on different things realted to the course. I don't enjoy discussions of my views on some of the things that were asked to discuss. I think people who are quiet and don't like their opinon to be viewed by everyone was somewhat handicapped by the forums. |
| 1 | None |
| 1 | thats not whats hard its the tests |
| 1 | The online quizzes was very helpful for me. |
| 1 | The online quizzes were a great review to the textbook. This textbook was a good choice. |
| 1 | The only complaint that I had on that matter was the one time that I logged in to get the quiz done on the deadline, took the most recent available quiz, and discovered that I was taking the quiz for next week. |
| 1 | The people who did not complete these assignments do not take their education seriously. The polls and computer quizzes take 10 minutes at most and help you understand and relate to the material covered in the course. |
| 1 | The polls and questionares were cool. I also appreciated how the quizzes were set up to give us some points towards our grade but mainly were there as a study guide for after we read the chapter. I liked knowing that anyone of those questions might end up on the midterm/final, thus I was encouraged to take the quiz multiple times. However there was a bit more information to process regarding the online forums than I expected (on top of class participation and at home reading) and I often found myself struggling to formulate my own "acceptable" opinion, never once achieving my goal of a 3-point post. |
| 1 | The students who did not take advantage of the online quizzes and opinion polls must not have cared about their grade or school. I care and am very thankful you have provided us with easy to access assignments. They were very helpful with my learning and boosting my grade. |
| 1 | There isnt anything you can do to change this fact. They have over a week to complete the online quizzes and if they read the chapters it only takes about 10-20 minutes for them to take the quizzes and they only need to get 10 out of 20. If they dont want to take the time to do their work that you make very accessible and very easy to pass then they are being irresponsible. |
| 1 | Those people are lazy. It is not hard to log on and take the polls and the quizzes. I had no problem. |
| 1 | working on the weekends till 11:30 pm is hard to find time to get the forums done and midterms messed me up on the quizzes or else i would not have gotten 2 zeros. it was not clear to me when the first quiz of the chapter was due. |
|
13. I used to have 9pm deadlines on quizzes and forums. In this survey last term, students requested a later deadline time. So I moved it back to 11:55pm this term. Did that change (and time) work well for you this term? Do you have any other suggestions for deadline changes?
| 1 | I suffered from horrible procrastination this term and it is only my fault. The deadline did help with the quizzes and forums. |
| 1 | The change worked excellently. It gave me time to complete things I had forgotten. |
| 1 | the timing of the deadline was perfect and i think it allowed students with busier schedules the opportunity to get things done |
| 1 | Honestly, I think any time works. I feel that a student can operate within the confines of the instructions. For me deadlines give me a time frame to organize my day with. I could really careless if the deadline was 12pm or 12am; I would just schedule for it. |
| 1 | I always get my quizzes done the first day so this didnt effect me. |
| 1 | I can see why 9pm could be a problem. I liked the midnight deadline. |
| 1 | I had no issues with the deadlines. |
| 1 | I have no complaints. |
| 1 | I like the deadline changes being later, makes it easier with my schedule. |
| 1 | I like the deadline times as they are don't change them. |
| 1 | I liked the 11:55 deadline. Working evenings, there was still a nice time buffer between work and the deadline to get the quiz done |
| 1 | i liked the deadline. worked great for me because i have a kid and do my studying when shes asleep. so the later time was great. |
| 1 | I liked the deadlines. They were set perfectly. |
| 1 | I liked the time at 11:55. |
| 1 | I really liked the time change this term, gave me more flexability. |
| 1 | I think 11:55 was perfect. |
| 1 | I think that deadline is a good one because so many of us work and have late nights so on those days when we have to start our homework at 10pm, it\'s nice to have time to do the quiz or make a last minute post without worrying. Other than that I think the deadlines are fair and I had no problem with them. |
| 1 | I think that it was very helpful cause it gives you time after you get out of school and/or work o do things that you missed. |
| 1 | I think that the 11:59 deadline is great. im a parent and most of the time can't log on until 10pm after my son has fallen asleep |
| 1 | I took advantage of the late deadline on the forums once or twice this term, mostly because the last day is the day most of the more outrageous, less thought out comments pop up and those are the ones that are most fun to respond to. In that light, I guess it doesn't matter when the deadline is because that will always happen right before the deadline. |
| 1 | I would prefer a deadline later in the day simply because I have school and other obligations earlier so most of my homework gets done in the evening. Also, most instructors have late deadlines so an early deadline is more likely to be missed because students don't expect it. Perhaps if you do have an early deadline, simply make it super clear. It was hard for me to find the deadline times on the forums. |
| 1 | I'm not sure that I would feel the same way about the online opinion polls and quizzes if the deadline was at 9pm. Because of my school schedule, my work schedule requires me to work nights and I would definitely have more than one missing quiz and opinion pole if the deadline was 9pm. The 11:55pm deadline worked great for me. |
| 1 | It didn't effect the time I did my quizzes. I usually always do them Sunday night. |
| 1 | It was a reasonable deadline. 9 pm is too soon with people having school, work and homework. 11:55 was a good time for a deadline. |
| 1 | it was great to have until midnight of the due date to get the quizzes in. |
| 1 | It was so nice to have the later deadline. I was by far less stressed, even though I usually got them done before nine. |
| 1 | It worked extremely well for me (the later deadline). When I work, I usually close and that means getting off work around 8:30, home by 9. I would barely ever be able to meet those deadlines. My job actually closes a lot earlier than many other places where a lot of students work. This later deadline is very, very helpful. |
| 1 | It worked great for me. I don\'t get off work until 7pm so it was so nine to not have to stress about squeezing it in between school and work. I can just do it when I get home. |
| 1 | It worked well for me. Unfortunately, I sometimes found myself putting off the assignment until the last minute, but I was always able to easily remember the deadline. |
| 1 | It's a good deadline. |
| 1 | Keep the 11:55 deadline. |
| 1 | Later works well |
| 1 | midnight by the end of that day its due |
| 1 | Much better, I loved the new deadline, It helped me get my quizzes in on time. |
| 1 | no |
| 1 | That change is fantastic. Many students today are night owls, especially since these deadlines take place on weekends, when there is no particular incentive not to sleep until the sun sets. |
| 1 | That time was great. It was the different days that things were due that confused me. |
| 1 | The deadline changed was very helpful. I would leave it as-is. |
| 1 | This nine o\' clock deadline worked very well for me. I don\'t think I would have completed as many quizzes as I did if the deadline had been five o\'clock. |
| 1 | Yes |
| 1 | Yes it really helped. |
| 1 | Yes that worked very well. I thought Monday was a good due date for the quizzes because it gives you the whole school week and weekend to do them. |
| 1 | Yes that worked way better for me, I took this class last term and missed some deadline because it wasn\'t extended through Monday. |
| 1 | Yes this deadline was helpful for me since I work and attend school full time |
| 1 | YES! It saved my life with juggling procrastination and work. |
| 1 | YES!!! a lot of jobs go until 9 or 10 at night, plus kids, exc. Those extra 3 hours work miracles. |
| 1 | Yes, found it very useful. I'm sure even more-so for people that work outside of school |
| 1 | Yes, it worked perfectly for me!!! |
| 1 | yes. I thought the change was very helpful due to work and other school work and such. |
| 1 | you should have the forums due on the same day as the quiz. |
|
|
14. How important was it to attend class (besides the 10% attendance/participation portion of the course grade) to be successful in this course?
|
|
15. How important was not only buying, but reading the assigned textbook chapters for this course?
|
|
16. How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook itself AND the extent to which the instructor incorporated the textbook into the course? (too much, too little, just right, felt good about having to buy it, etc.?)
| 1 | I liked the text book a lot! I read all but one of the chapters and found it extremely helpful for understanding the material before your presentations. I did find it a bit difficult understanding (just by reading the book) which parts you wanted us to really understand/remember. Your presentations cleared that up though. |
| 1 | I love this textbook. |
| 1 | Just right |
| 1 | alittle lengthy, and wordy. |
| 1 | Felt very good. Definitely needed the book and class lecture. Teacher kept it interesting and wasn't hard if you read the chapters and attended class. |
| 1 | For the most part I was satisfied. Some of the chapters are a little cluttered, but usually the instructor acknowledges that and points out the important information. |
| 1 | Good balance. The book itself can be a bit slow and long-winded at times though. |
| 1 | good book, although a little more variety in a course is better then just reading an tests. |
| 1 | He really incorporated the textbook, however the Professor does such a great job teaching the material it's not necessary to buy the text and read it. |
| 1 | I actually enjoyed this textbook. I say it's a keeper. |
| 1 | i am very satisfied. it was easy to read and very useful. |
| 1 | i felt it was a good balance because of the other incorported class material. |
| 1 | I felt like the book was super "wordy"... very long. Got boring. |
| 1 | I think it was a good read, but you shouldn't take a history class if you don't like history. |
| 1 | I think the textbook was certainly used enough and referenced neough to warrant buying it. I liked the overall organization of the textbook and the fact that it brought up topics and ideas I had never learned in previous U.S. history classes. |
| 1 | I thought it was a great Bol and well laid out. |
| 1 | I thought the textbook was concise and to the point. Better than most. cheap too. |
| 1 | I was really satisfied. I really believe that I needed both to excel in the class. |
| 1 | I was very satisfied with both the text and the incorparation by the professor. |
| 1 | If I paced myself during the week, the chapters were bearable to read. If I gave myself a day or two to read them then the chapters were just too long. But that is easily fixed by not procrastinating. :) |
| 1 | incorporated it just right, the things you highlighted in class prove important on the quizzes. |
| 1 | It was a good textbook. The instructor tended to go off on different tangents with the videos in class, and the lectures didn't always match up to how much text material was on the exams. |
| 1 | It was a lot of reading, that was not that easy to always understand. |
| 1 | It was easy, and perfectly incorporated into the class! The audio version helped me out a lot. |
| 1 | It was good. I honestly didn't read it all that much, because the material isn't that arcane, and the answers to online quiz questions can be obtained with a little bit of research. Material which was relevant was also rather well covered in class, and it seemed like half the time the book was brought up, it was to criticize its presentation of the information.
|
| 1 | It was pretty good. I needed it |
| 3 | just right |
| 1 | just right. And the book was a good cheap price compared to the other textbooks ive had to buy.
|
| 1 | Just right. Definitely was a contributing factor in my choice of classes for next term. |
| 1 | Pretty satisfied. I know we were supposed to read the chapter and then come to the classes about them, but this term I did it the other way and liked it better. Knowing about the material in advance made it easier to get the important information out of the book faster. |
| 1 | Sometimes I felt it was a little too much, but overall the course was organized in a way for me to prepare myself for the intense work. |
| 1 | text was ok.. Joe is great at covering the material |
| 1 | The chapters could be broken into smaller chapters in my opinion. |
| 1 | the text book was easy to read, but did not hold my interest, where as a lecture on the same matter would hold my interest |
| 1 | The text was easy to read and the instructor did well brining it into the class. |
| 1 | The textbook was informative but a little dense and wordy and I sometimes had to wade through a passage a few times to really understand it. I think the instructor going over the chapters and incorporating the textbook into the lecture was really helpful to solidify what I had read. |
| 1 | The textbook was very good, but the lectures in class really made the readings easier to understand and incorporate into memory |
| 1 | This textbook was a good choice, Professor Escobar stayed on track with the textbook and class studies. |
| 1 | to little. I know what we talked about in the book was also covered in the book but I would have liked it if you had tied the book directly in with your lectures more than you did. |
| 1 | Too litle. |
| 1 | too much for me personally. maybe i underestimated the level of this class, but the reading seemed too thick on these subjects. |
| 1 | too much. Between the class time and the book, the alignment is a bit off. I feel the lectures and the book should be lined up better and should almost mirror one another. |
| 1 | Very satisfied |
| 1 | Very. A lot of information that helped you pass the midterm and final. |
|
|
17. Textbook publishers offer instructors the ability to make a customized textbook. I could choose specific chapters, documents, pictures, pages, and even specific paragraphs to use from a variety of offerings.
The obvious advantage would be that students would get more specific textbook information to read. It would be specifically targeted to the class and what the instructor wanted students to know for use in the class.
The largest drawback is that this custom textbook would most likely cost more than the textbook I currently use for this class (HST201,202,and 203, Fall, Winter, and Spring terms... one textbook for all three classes for just $45). More importantly, customized books can't really be sold back to the bookstore at the end of the term.
For your information, this is the last year of our current textbook edition. I will not be making this change this academic year. But I'm considering it for the future. I'm trying to do what is best for students and I'd really appreciate your answer on this one.
So the question remains, do you like the idea of taking this specific U.S. history class, with me as the instructor, using a customized textbook?
|
|
18. Of the video clips I used during the term, would you say there were:
|
|
19. I've often thought of putting ALL of my video clip online, requiring students to view them on their own, saving class time for other things. What do you think of this idea? (great, okay but..., terrible, etc.)
| 1 | Bad idea. Videos in class help the learning process. If you put them online for us to watch, people won\'t watch them. |
| 1 | Honestly, I think that the video clips help students stay engaged and focused on your presentations. You could put a few more online, but having one or two of them during class isn\'t a bad thing. |
| 1 | No! It was enjoyable getting a break from lecture to watch clips. Requiring them outside of class would be just too much extra work. |
| 1 | Okay, but I really don\'t think people will take advantage of it. I think it will hurt more then help. |
| 1 | A mixture of in class videos and online videos is perfect! |
| 1 | Great idea, do both; in class and online, can you add your slideshow, or powerpoint. |
| 1 | great, it would save time class to discuss other things and would also help in studying for the exams |
| 1 | Honestly, I think that if ALL of the video clips were online, many students wouldn't take the initiative and watch them all. A few video clips is okay because it wouldn't be an overload. |
| 1 | I do not think this would be a good idea. Students learn in different ways. Some are good visual learners but would suffer watching them at home, as well as, your input after the videos is very helful. |
| 1 | I don't like it. I really enjoy videos in class but when I have to view them on my own time, it doesn't really happen. Or it happens last minute. |
| 1 | I don't think it would be too good of an idea. It can really help keep the students attention. While the lectures usually do a pretty good job, a well placed video clip can make a big difference.
|
| 1 | I don\'t think that putting all of the video clips online would be beneficial. I don\'t think that all of the students would watch them and they also would not benefit from hearing the instructor\'s views on the subject. |
| 1 | I like having the amount you show in class because I feel a lot of students wouldnt watch them outside of class even if it was required. I would but others may not. |
| 1 | I like seeing them in class. |
| 1 | I like that we viewed video clips in class because then you could explain and summarize them afterwards and that was very helpful. |
| 1 | I like the idea for the most part, but for students like me, who only have 5 gb of internet a month, and limited time, that\'s not exactly the best option. The only problem I see with the videos is the length of some of them. Maybe with video clips over ten minutes, you give us a week or two to watch them, but by the day of the class lecture, if less than 40-50 percent of students didnt watch it, play it in class, take it off the web, and warn them about the internet requirements. |
| 1 | I like watching them in class. |
| 1 | I liked them better when we watched them in class and could get feedback from instructor and students. |
| 1 | i liked watching them in class but i would have liked to have them put it up online so i can veiw them later. |
| 1 | I really enjoy the videos in the class! It adds a wonderful element. |
| 1 | I really enjoyed many of the in class videos. I looked forward to a video almost every day. |
| 1 | I say in class, that way we get your feedback and it corresponds with what we are discussing which helps with understanding them better. |
| 1 | I think it would be a good thing to post it online as well as in class. As for me i know if i got to watch the movie 2 times i may have a couple notes that i didn't pick up the first time so it could be valuable to me. |
| 1 | I think it\'s not a great idea because from a students point of view, taking the lecture notes is really fast paced and somewhat stressful and while we need to take notes during a video, when we watch them in class it\'s nice to go over them with the instructor and have the important parts pointed out and reiterated. Knowing how the instructor teaches, the videos would most likely be skimmed over the next class time anyway because he really wants the students to succeed. I think it might actually save time and it is a nice feature of the class in my eyes. |
| 1 | I think less people would actually watch the videos. I know I probably wouldn't watch all of them, but some students might. |
| 1 | I think that the video clips online help me understand the flow of information better. Viewing the videos in class helps me link information and also supports ideas discussed in class. |
| 1 | I think the videos help a lot during class time to keep us interested and into the lesson. |
| 1 | I think the videos in class are good, because they help break up the lecture, and I think it's important to change up the pace in class. |
| 1 | i think they should be made available but maybe only show hlaf in class and half online but let us have acess to them all. |
| 1 | I think this is great idea, especially for me, because I couldn\'t always see the video in class that well due to my bad vision. |
| 1 | I think you should keep them in class but then post them online for further study. I usually searched on line for the videos you showed in class so I could re-watch them again. |
| 1 | it was a good idea, did i watch many of them, no but I should have. |
| 1 | It would give us more time to discuss the readings specifically in class, however watching the videos in class gives us an opportunity to relax (you as well) while also still learning visually. |
| 1 | It would make class a little boring. |
| 1 | No I like it the way it was, some in class and some online. |
| 1 | Not a bad idea. Would help for kids who are constantly absent, but I don't know if the work required to upload the videos would be worth it to help someone not attending the classes. |
| 1 | Not a good idea. |
| 1 | okay but its nice to have the variety in class other than just notes |
| 1 | okay, but i think it is helpful watching them in class because we got to talk about them. |
| 1 | Okay, not too great. Sometimes it's hard to pay attention to them at home. It gives more incentive to go to class. |
| 1 | Only if they are extra information. I feel like they waste time in class and we weren't often tested on their content. |
| 1 | Terrible |
| 1 | Terrible because the videos help you get a better idea of what was going on then |
| 1 | Terrible idea!. Please keep putting them in class. |
| 1 | terrible. |
| 1 | Terrible. The videos makes the lecture much more enjoyable. |
| 1 | Terrible. It is nice to watch them during class because you always talked about the material it covered and if they were online we wouldn\'t get the benefits of discussing it in class. I also think that it is nice to not have to listen to a lecture the whole class and have a change of pace throughout the class. |
| 1 | That would be fine but I like the way it breaks up your time in class. Theres a better flow with the videos because when you DO speak I am ready to pay attention. The videos help reiterate the points/issues you follow up with. |
| 1 | That would be fine. The class time does often feel rather cramped. |
| 1 | the video tie in with the lecture..but it would be nice to be able to see the videos through out the term |
| 1 | there would be to many home videos if we had no class time videos. |
|
20. At the end of the term, what letter grade do you believe you will earn in this class?
|
|
21. On average how many hours a week did you spend on the course?
|
|
22. If given the choice between class formats in the future, which would you most likely choose.
| Hybrid: This 4 credit class, exactly as you have experienced it (80 minute classes, twice a week, class lecture/video, online computer quizzes, required attendance, online forums, two exams) | 76% | 45 |
| Traditional: A 4 credit class with 110 minute classes twice a week, class lecture/video, online computer quizzes, required attendance, two exams. (note: no forums) | 24% | 14 |
|
| Total | 100% | 59/59 |
|
|
23. Do you have any other comments you'd like to make about the choice you made in the above question?
| 1 | I liked the flexibility of the hybrid format, and I will choose it again in the future. |
| 1 | The hybrid class is nice because it has limitd class time, and you get to mutate the schedule of reading, quizzes and other work to fit your schedule. The only thing i dont like about the class is the same thing, week after week after week....nothing really changes. |
| 1 | I can honestly say the in class portion of this class was very enjoyable, however the out of class work, was not so much. |
| 1 | I don't personally like forums. While they can be interesting, I don't see what I can learn from other students that I couldn't learn from the instructor. However, I can see how it would help students think for themselves. Discuss topics. Deduce and learn independently. It can be a good thing but I personally don't care for them much. |
| 1 | I enjoyed the forums because we got to interact with classmates and discuss the topics in which we were studying. It helped to better understand the material. |
| 1 | I feel very strongly about my opinion. I'm sure there are many students who really enjoy this aspect of the class but I am not one of them. I do see the benefit of the forums in that it opens discussion between students about specific events of the past and how they correlate to issues of today, but I guess I'm just a little more traditional when it comes to class structure/responsibility. That being said, I still chose to take the following history class next term because of all the things I DO like about the course. |
| 1 | I get frustrated with the forums because they are time consuming but I do think they help us further understand the material and add an extra element to the class experience. |
| 1 | i like everything about the class except for the forums |
| 1 | I like the idea of forums because it gives everyone a chance to discuss their opinion and allows each of us to think for ourselves, instead of relying on a select few in class to always share their opinions. |
| 1 | i like the intergration of both mediums. |
| 1 | I liked the flexibilty the hybrid format gives. I was able to complete some assignments (like the quizzes and forums) when it was convenient for me. |
| 1 | I liked the hybrid class a lot, but with my sports schedule I can't continue with your class and need a mon/wed/fri class for the sprin term |
| 1 | I liked the textbook, i thought the information was all good, the only thing i did not like was the size of the book, it is small and heavy. |
| 1 | I rather enjoy the forums. Admittedly, the level of discourse is... varying, but it is essentially a mini-essay assignment, and I honestly believe that codifying opinions on a subject is the best way to understand them. |
| 1 | I really benefit from a lecture type learning environment. The online portion wasn\\\'t a huge reinforcer to what I learned in class and from the text. |
| 1 | I'm a visual learner so that is my bias opinion, the more face to face lecture the better. |
| 1 | NA |
| 1 | No |
| 1 | none |
| 1 | Nope. I just like the hybrid format a lot, and I think now that I'm finished I'll miss it. |
| 1 | The forums are very easy. Its free points if you do the work and very insightful. |
| 1 | the no forums part was the big factor in my choice. |
| 1 | The survey covered pretty much everything except I still wish there was an in class study session for the mid term like you do for the final. |
|
|
24. Would you recommend this hybrid course, as you experienced it this term, to other students?
|
|
25. Do you have or regularly use any of the following?
| | |
| iPod or other MP3 player | | 1.3 |
| cell phone | | 1.0 |
| laptop computer | | 1.1 |
| your own website | | 1.9 |
| a Twitter account | | 1.8 |
| a Facebook/MySpace (or other social networking) account | | 1.2 |
| a Flickr/Picassa/Photobucket (or other picture sharing) account | | 1.8 |
|
|
26. What recommendations would you suggest in order to improve this course?
| 1 | greater fourm topics. |
| 1 | I cannot think of anything to improve the class other than making the study guides for fianls and midterms a little more focused (i.e. categorizing them by topic or chapter in the textbook). Students would still have to study them and put the correct events and people together but they would be a little more focused in their studying. This may not be the case for everyone but, personally, I did not use the study guides because they were too broad. I used my notes and the quizzes to study for tests because they worked better for me. |
| 1 | do other things every once and a while. |
| 1 | extra credit |
| 1 | For the mid term and final to be more like the quizzes |
| 1 | I can't think of any off the top of my head |
| 1 | I don't know how I felt about the multi-subject forums this term. Admittedly, it can be hard to get into a forum whose subject you have little interest in. Multi-subject forums help to ameliorate that issue, but they also divide the discourse, and usually only the first six-or-so threads actually spark discussion, so a forum can be dominated with a particular subject, leaving the others by the wayside. |
| 1 | I like group activities and this class didn't have too many, but it's no big deal. |
| 1 | I liked last semester when we got to view the final study list before hand. Although I read each chapter and took extensive notes I sometimes found it hard to link information together. However I understand that providing a study list in advance might limit the information a student takes in. |
| 1 | I liked the course. I can't think of any significant issues, if any at all. |
| 1 | I really enjoyed the class and am looking forward to taking 203 with you this spring and 201 in the fall. My only improvement is a personal one: take the time to read the syllabus more carefully, that really would have secured an A for me. That was my fault. |
| 1 | I really enjoyed the course in general. I really liked you as an instructor. I found your lectures to be fascinating and quite educational. I don't actually know if there is anything I would change. Besides not preferring the forums. |
| 1 | I think if you could find a way to actually make people participate in the forums throughout the week the conversation would be better. But good luck with that. |
| 1 | I think the class is very effective as is. |
| 1 | I was not hugely into the forums because I felt like I put a lot of time and effort into them but never seemed to get a great grade. |
| 1 | intergrate it with facebook. |
| 1 | Just continue doing what you're doing. Everything was wonderful. I REALLY enjoy the email updates you send us. SUPER helpful. |
| 1 | Maybe extra points for those students who post early for the forums and not wait last minute. |
| 1 | no |
| 1 | No recommendations. |
| 3 | none |
| 1 | Not as many videos online. |
| 1 | One thing that I would recommend is to have small class activities or discussions. I realize that the class time makes it a little more difficult to incorporate such activities, but maybe just once every couple of weeks or so. |
| 1 | This is a fast pace class, be prepared to take good notes; Professor Escobar could slow down just a bit on the slideshow, or make the slideshow available online. |
|
|
27. Did I forget to ask any other relevant question(s)? Is there anything else you'd like to add?
| 1 | I loved this class! |
| 1 | I thought I had your biased figured out but you kept me on my toes. good job. |
| 1 | Great teacher and fun to learn from. Thank you from someone who didn't like learning history when in high school |
| 1 | I enjoyed this class a lot. It was hard work, but I think it will be paid off in the end. |
| 1 | I really enjoyed this class and look forward to the next class. |
| 1 | I think you covered everything! This course was a lot of fun and you're the only instructor who I have had that uses moodle like crazy! I love moodle! I'm on it 24/7 checking updates, announcements, grades, etc. It was refreshing to have an instructor be so efficient and helpful! |
| 1 | Maybe you could have asked questions about the forum. |
| 1 | NA |
| 1 | no |
| 1 | No you covered everything. |
| 1 | No, |
| 2 | none |
| 1 | none. |
| 1 | nope |
| 1 | Nope, great job! |
| 1 | nope. you are a good teacher. its enjoyable to go to your class. |
| 1 | Nope. Good class, good teacher. Thanks. |
| 1 | Nothing I can think of. |
| 1 | On your personalized textbook: the only issue I can think of with it is that it doesn't mesh with the idea of getting accounts of history from as many sources as possible, it would just be you. I guess it's more likely you'd be making a composite text from all sorts of different writers, then? I think that would be a good idea. |
| 1 | Related to Question 17.
Either way with a specific text or the book we have it would work out just fine. Its just do you want to pay the money I think. I like texts i get to use through serious of classes, such as math and this set of history courses. |
| 1 | Thanks for another excellent term! |
| 1 | The class was great, but you have to understand that it is very hard for a person who is 53 years old and who has been out of school for 30 years to answer your forums. I did everything else right and I am only running a D, I could have took the drop on the class but would have lost my grants and unemployment. I hope that a 60 % or better on my final will give me a C. Thank You |
| 1 | This is the third class I've taken with you, and it's been a pleasure. I'll come in during the review session, but I'll say it here: thanks. |
