Ellie Roxanne MacDonald FromTo me Joe Escobar Tuesday, 13 January 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [11:14 AM]: Good Morning, I was reviewing notes from last week regarding the information from HIS201 that we covered and I am not sure I understand part of the notes I took. You mentioned Geography, Sections N,W and S and rise of the political parties. Would you be willing to clarify that? My notes jump from that into knowing the 13 colonies. I apologize if I missed something and would appreciate if you could let me know what know what you are looking for and what part of the book I should be referring to. Thank you so much! Roxanne MacDonald Joe Escobar [11:33 AM]: No problem. We ran out of class time last week. All will be explained today in class. Monday, 26 January 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [08:55 AM]: Good Morning, I am trying to plan my classes for Summer Term and I was wondering you were going to be teaching HST 201 or 203. Have a great day. Thank you. Joe Escobar [09:18 AM]: Why thank you for the compliment Roxanne. :) Unfortunately, LCC (in what I believe is a "lack" of wisdom) does not allow full time instructors to teach Summer classes. So no, I won't be teaching any Summer classes. I will, however, teach 2 sections of HST203 next term (Spring). This classes are on Tuesday and Thursday at 10am and 1pm, just like this term. (80 minute hybrid classes). Roxanne MacDonald [07:03 PM]: Thank you for getting back to me so promptly. I decided to forgo my math class for spring term in favor of your class although my 14 year old son who is a math genius and my occasional tutor suggested I wait until after our midterms to decide! Joe Escobar [10:33 PM]: Clever boy :) Tuesday, 3 February 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [09:33 PM]: Hi,I was hoping I could meet with you this Thursday during your office hours. The syllabus states they are from 11:30-1. I wanted to verify that you would be available this week during that time and should I make an appointment? There are some terms on our study guide that I was hoping to get clarification on or maybe a small nudge in the direction I should be looking in my notes or the textbook. I have quite a few (about 15) but I will continue to work on them until Thursday. Thank you! Joe Escobar [11:07 PM]: I'd be happy to meet with you. I do have one appointment already from about 11:20 to about 11:45, so will 12pm at my office CEN419J work for you? Wednesday, 4 February 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [05:13 AM]: That would be great, I will be there. Thank you so much! Monday, 9 February 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [12:23 PM]: Hi, I wanted to let you know that I will not be in class tomorrow. My hot water heater went out over the weekend, the new one is being installed Tuesday but the only time they had available was right during class. I am sorry! Would you be willing to briefly let me know what I will be missing and would there be any extra credit I might do to make up for it? I really didn't want to miss class but I really like hot water. Thank you and have a great afternoon. Joe Escobar [01:39 PM]: So with the Moodle message prior to class, you won't miss the attendance "grade". The first part of class will be related to the midterm exam, class grades, etc. Then, we start chapter 15. We probably won't get too far, but be sure to get the notes from others. Roxanne MacDonald [04:25 PM]: Wow! I just finished taking the mid-term this afternoon. I got 59 out of 100. Needless to say I am very disappointed, I spent so much time preparing and before I submitted it I felt very good about my answers. I am not sure what happened. I am hoping you will send back a reply that states there was a computer error and that is really not my score. However if you burst my bubble and that is my score would it be possible to meet with you on Thursday sometime? I would like to determine if there is something more I need to be doing in taking notes, reviewing or if you have any thoughts or suggestions I would sure value the input. Thank you! Wednesday, 11 February 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [06:26 PM]: Hi, I sent a message on Monday regarding our mid-term but I imagine you were quite busy with the grading process. I did see the grade posted today and my score is higher! If I check again in a few days will it improve more…just kidding. I do really appreciate you meeting with me prior to the test and helping with my questions. I am the one who missed class on Tuesday due to a hot water heater being replaced; did you pass the tests back at that time? Am I able to print it on-line? I am looking forward to determining what I need to do in order to have a better understanding of the material, better study methods, less test anxiety etc. Thank you and have a great rest of the day. Joe Escobar [06:41 PM]: I spoke to the class about the test in general terms and about the class grades to date. I'd be happy to go over those with you (and your test) at your convenience. Let me know a day and time that works for you. I hope you are back to having hot water. :) Roxanne MacDonald [07:06 PM]: Thank you, would you be available tomorrow before the class at 1? I could be on campus by 12. Joe Escobar [09:47 PM]: Sure, that should work. See you then. Sunday, 22 February 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [05:55 PM]: Hi, When you have time would you be willing to re-open quiz #15? I was only able to take it once and I would like to take it a few more times for review of the chapter. Thank you! Joe Escobar [05:58 PM]: Done Roxanne MacDonald [06:20 PM]: Wow! That was fast, Thank You Tuesday, 10 March 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [09:41 PM]: Hi, If you have time to take a look at this, I was curious if you think this might be an accurate story. CNN posted an article that there was a message regarding the attack on Fort Sumter found in Lincoln’s watch. I found it really interesting that he did not know it was there and the Smithsonian never thought to look in his watch. This is the link for the article. http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/03/10/lincoln.watch/index.html?iref=mpstoryview Joe Escobar [11:03 PM]: This is news to me, and it looks like brand new information. Nothing debunking it on snopes.com Thursday, 12 March 2009 Joe Escobar [02:56 PM]: I've just uploaded the Wizard of Oz article I read today into the Class Handouts section. Roxanne MacDonald [06:02 PM]: Thank you! I appreciate it. Wednesday, 25 March 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [08:40 AM]: Good Morning, I hope you are having a wonderful spring break and I am sorry to disturb that but I have a concern about the way grades posted. I enjoyed seeing an A- on my final grade in express lane! However in moodle it shows a B+. I would take the A- of course but if I really got a B+ that is what should post. Thank you so much and I hope you have a great day. Joe Escobar [10:54 AM]: :) See you in a week. Sunday, 12 April 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [07:26 PM]: Hi, I was wondering if you thought you might have chapter 24 quiz on moodle by Wednesday? I would like to take your advice and do the quiz before I leave on Thursday. It sounds as if internet service may be not reliable over the weekend and if I get stuck on the way home Monday in traffic...I could miss the quiz and that would be terrible! Thank you Joe Escobar [08:03 PM]: I always make those quizzes available on Mondays at 5pm, when the other one is due. Does that work for you? Also, I sure do appreciate your thoughtful participation in the HTD's. I especially like the the "goading" implication. I think you are definitely on to something there. smile Roxanne MacDonald [08:27 PM]: I guess I just have not noted when the new quiz actually posted up. Thank you, Monday is perfect. I can read the new chapter and take it before Thursday. I personally think she was goading. Why else pick a name that had that kind of background if not to make a point? This has been a great HTD, a lot of choices to comment on! See you Tuesday. Tuesday, 14 April 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [05:15 PM]: Hi, My Archaeology teacher reminded us today that mid-terms are right around the corner which leads me to this question. How do you feel about posting a "mix" of all of the chapters for a mid-term prep quiz like you did for the final in HIS202? That, for me anyway was really helpful in preparing. Thank you Roxanne MacDonald [05:15 PM]: Hi, My Archaeology teacher reminded us today that mid-terms are right around the corner which leads me to this question. How do you feel about posting a "mix" of all of the chapters for a mid-term prep quiz like you did for the final in HIS202? That, for me anyway was really helpful in preparing. Thank you Joe Escobar [06:03 PM]: Ask and ye shall receive.... in week 4. Roxanne MacDonald [08:11 PM]: Thank you! Thursday, 16 April 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [09:10 AM]: Hi, I am very sorry but I won't be in class today. I am leaving this weekend to get a car from family in Montana and my ride up to Portland to catch the train is leaving about four hours early. I am making arrangements to get notes taken for Sarah and myself. Again, I apoligze. Thank you Joe Escobar [09:23 AM]: OK Roxanne MacDonald [03:00 PM]: Hi, I just got an e-mail from someone in our class asking me if I needed notes. I thought I just sent a message to the person I sit with, please tell me I did not send one to everyone telling them I sit next to them and I would like them to please take notes. Once again I am sorry for missing class, I had it perfectly arranged to be in class and then leave and I did not find out until this morning that wasn't going to work. Have a great weekend. Joe Escobar [03:10 PM]: I believe someone asked for notes in the Student Forum, so you were probably getting a response to that student's request. Tuesday, 21 April 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [04:10 PM]: Hi, If you have time would you be willing to send me the video clips I missed in class this past Thursday? I appreciate your understanding and truly enjoy your class. Thank you Joe Escobar [06:41 PM]: 3 clips here https://teach.lanecc.edu/escobarj/203/1first/week3/ 3, 4, and 5 minutes Roxanne MacDonald [07:37 PM]: Thank you very much! Wednesday, 22 April 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [05:54 AM]: Good Morning, It seems that during and after WW1 racism and attitude towards "outsiders" was intense to say the least. According to one of those video clips Wilson jailed women and force fed them because of protests against the war. How did he ever win the Nobel Peace Prize? Am I missing something? If you have time to answer this that would be great or would it be better to come by your office? Thank you Joe Escobar [07:52 AM]: Good question. The simple answer ... he helped end the Great War. Period... Nobel Peace Prize (recall TR had gotten one for ending the small Russo-Japanese War. Since the committee couldn't recind that prize (ha), they just had to give one to the person who helped end the bigger conflict.) Nobel prizes rarely consider the "domestic" situations in specific countries. Small example... Al Gore isn't elected president of U.S. in 2000, but helps to "save the world". So how WW dealt with war protesters was easily dismissed. Final piece... WW will "work a deal" with Carrie Chapman Catt, supporting women's suffrage if they will support him in war. Deal made... done deal. Women get right to vote under Democratic president. Yeah honorable Democrats. smile Roxanne MacDonald [10:29 AM]: Wow! I can see how ending the war is a positive thing but it seemed to me there were some horrible other things that were happening and that did not seem to even be considered until many years later. These videos are looking back and saying some very negative things about Wilson and several other presidents I previously thought were kind and great presidents and maybe parts of what they did in office are great but certainly not all. Don't get me wrong, I would much rather have an accurate picture of how things were but what a grim picture it truly is. Thank you! ...for taking the time to explain that to me. And Carrie Chapman Catt....what a deal! It seems the women were still not making their "voice" heard if they were voting the way their husbands did. No one I knew liked my voting choice in this last election but I did get to do exactly what I wanted which is progression from then. Have a great day! Joe Escobar [10:54 AM]: Yep, sorry to continue bursting your bubbles. smile Just be sure to put what you call "grim, horrible, etc" into perspective. Remember the elderly speakers in the 1920's video. Many who were "poor", didn't even know it. By extension, what they would consider "grim, horrible" would probably also be tempered by that outlook. Also, the force-fed women protesters were a very small number (and no radio/tv/internet). Today, those small number are certainly amplified. Is this good or bad... that is the real question. smile Roxanne MacDonald [01:17 PM]: College has had a funny way of bursting quite a few bubbles. It has been rather liberating even if it is twenty years later than it should have been. I feel that you made an excellent point by remembering to put things into perspective. What I consider grim, horrible and sad may not have been viewed in that same way then. I would be inclined to think that it is "bad" if things are being amplified. It comes back to what is the truth and if there is actually a truth. You mentioned several times last term about things being omitted in history books, what is being taught in schools etc. I think it tends to lead to a certain amount of closed minds. Thank you for the information and listening. I appreciate it. Saturday, 25 April 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [03:03 PM]: Hi, Did I hear you correctly in class or did I just imagine this took place? Are you posting a study guide for the midterm? The last part of class on Thursday really got my wheels turning on religion and history....enough that maybe I just imagined that you said that. Thank you and I hope you have an enjoyable rest of your weekend. Joe Escobar [05:01 PM]: I didn't imagine it. I hope to send out an email tonight after the HTD closes. Roxanne MacDonald [05:07 PM]: Whoo Hoo! Let the studying magic start. Thank you Friday, 1 May 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [09:19 PM]: Hi, I finished putting together my study guide for the mid-term. If you have a moment over the weekend I have three terms that I would appreciate a bit of help with if you don’t mind. Armistice- My understanding is this is a term used when at war and the sides are coming together for peace talks/resolution. I am just not sure to which situation this might apply to. Eastern Front- I think this is from the WW1 chapter but my notes are lacking about something specific and I seem to be having difficulty finding what I should be in the textbook. Government Intervention- Is this a general term referring to our level of understanding where the government steps in or something specific? Thank you for both your time and the patience you show. I appreciate it. Joe Escobar [09:44 PM]: If these are your only questions, you are in good shape. smile WWI ended with an armistice, a cease-fire, but at the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was treated as if it had flown the white flag of surrender. The German people (and Hitler) never forgot this "slight". Eastern Front - In WWI, the front between Germany and Russia, where during the Communist Revolution, Lenin removed Russia from the war (and its commitments to the Triple Entente) with the Treaty of Brest Litovsk. (U.S. soldiers fought on the Western Front.) Government intervention is just a general reference to the Progressives chapter. Who can fix our problems??? the government can. (I'm not sure I buy this argument in the 21st century. ha!) Will people be good on their own. No, the government can make them behave through legislation. Saturday, 2 May 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [06:47 AM]: Thank You! I hope you have a great weekend. Roxanne MacDonald [07:14 AM]: Good Morning, I am trying to re-take the chapter 25 quiz for practice since I only took it once and it is just taking me back to the main screen. Are you able to open that quiz or is this something possibly from my end with my computer...or me? Thank you Joe Escobar [11:53 AM]: Darn. Why are you the only student to notice this, and son long after the Monday 5pm deadline. It should have been open since 6pm Monday. All fixed now. Roxanne MacDonald [12:20 PM]: Thank you! I normally try to take it several times in a row the same day but I had a bit midterm to prepare for but now...it is all about history. Roxanne MacDonald [12:21 PM]: BIG midterm..not a bit. Good Grief, it is a good thing I am going to college. Sunday, 3 May 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [07:01 PM]: Hi, I just noticed that the chapter 26 quiz shows the closing date of this coming Wednesday. This sounds wonderful! Is this true or will it be the normal closing date of Monday? Thank you Joe Escobar [08:58 PM]: It will be Wed. I'm such a softy. Monday, 4 May 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [05:13 AM]: That is really great, Thank you! Tuesday, 5 May 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [06:51 AM]: Good Morning, Do you have any office hours available on Friday or Monday? If possible I would like to come in and go over my mid-term with you. I would like to determine the weak areas so I can go back over them. Even though the final is not over the whole term I want to make sure I have a good understanding of what we went over the first half. I think most of the "isms" and two of the map questions got me. Thank You! Joe Escobar [08:47 AM]: Sure 9a-12:30p on Friday Let me know what time. Roxanne MacDonald [07:22 PM]: Hi, Is 9:30 on Friday morning still available? If so, I will be there. Thank you Joe Escobar [08:27 PM]: See you then Wednesday, 6 May 2009 Joe Escobar [12:06 PM]: Hey, since you seemed to be flexible on Friday, could I change your 9:30a appointment to 11:30am. My schedule just changed. EITHER TIME will work for me. Just let me know. Roxanne MacDonald [02:35 PM]: Of course, I would be happy to do that. I will plan on being there at 11:30. Joe Escobar [03:36 PM]: See you then Tuesday, 12 May 2009 Joe Escobar [09:19 AM]: Hello Roxanne, Just thought you might like to consider this current topic, especially in a spectrum sense. It's Social Darwinistic, it's liberally optimistic "change", it's many things. I just read this on the weekly LCC staff newsletter. **Start FREEDOM TO FAIL OR "RIGHT TO SUCCEED? The Title III Engaging Students program is built on a foundation that students who come to Lane should have the right to succeed, and it takes deliberate planning and action to create this kind of culture. The “right to succeed” environment involves implementing a set of best practices for student success and retention that provides a path to success. By implementing these best practices in key areas of students’ experience at Lane, students can exercise their “right to succeed” and experience the freedom that comes with achievement of their goals. Anne McGrail, Language, Literature and Communication, has written a compelling essay published in the Community College Moment about this new culture at Lane. Her article, “A New Direction: From Freedom to Fail to Right to Succeed,” defines the difference in these two cultures and details some of the right to succeed practices being implemented through the Title III – Engaging Students program. I invite you to read McGrail’s article and engage in the college-wide work in creating a right to succeed for our students. ** End Personally, and as an instructor, I think I fall more on the tradition "freedom to fail" side of this one. I humbly submit my current poll question completion rates as examples. smile Roxanne MacDonald [04:02 PM]: Thank you for sending this to me! I am very interested in reading this essay. I am not quite sure though where to find the article. Is the Community College Moment available on-line? The poll questions have been very good and I personally find it disappointing to see the lack of participation. This is just an observation on my part but there seem to be some very intelligent individuals that have the ability to grasp what is being taught almost immediately, memorize information while doing several other things at the same time and yet they cannot manage to take a few minutes to answer a poll or respond to an on-line discussion in the HYBRID class they signed up for. I would give anything to have their ability. Every class that I have taken so far in my college experience (other than that chemistry and biology for health professions) I have done well in but only because I study almost every day and not just for a few minutes. I work very hard to get the same grade that some people get with very little effort. AH, this is considered a rant. (I just learned what a rant is) I apologize for taking up time with this but I just wanted you to know that even though my tests are not especially brilliant as far as scores go the information I have learned has been amazing and very valuable to me. Joe Escobar [08:47 PM]: No worry about the rant, and yes, it amazes me that some students can't take a simple poll, after being reminded in class AND in a weekend email. Oh well. As far as the article, I'll get you copy of the CCMoment. It is an LCC publication and we all get a free copy. Roxanne MacDonald [08:51 PM]: Thank you! Wednesday, 13 May 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [11:00 PM]: Hi, Do you remember the pro/con slides on the Atomic bombs from Tue.? I have everything written down for the pro/cons off that slide except the question. I think this explains some of why we dropped the bombs where we did and why they were dropped. Is that correct or did I miss something more than that. Thank you! Joe Escobar [11:20 PM]: The two sides were Reasons Supporting the Dropping of the Bomb and Reasons Against Roxanne MacDonald [11:29 PM]: Excellent, makes perfect sense now. I found I could not read my own handwriting from that day. Thank you Friday, 15 May 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [02:45 PM]: Hi, Is the same picture that you have in our HTD materials? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/8051650.stm It is image # 2 The photographer Hugh Van Es who took it died this morning. The news states this was his most famous photo and it has been called "The Fall of Saigon". Joe Escobar [08:41 PM]: Yep And wow, talk about timing (once again!) Thursday, 4 June 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [07:26 PM]: Hi, I have just a few terms from our study guide I am hoping you could help me with. Yazoo Delta. I looked it up and it seems as if it could be several things. I clearly missed this in class, probably the one day I missed. The other two I am not sure on is Missile Gap and Credibility Gap. Thank you! I hope you have a great weekend. Joe Escobar [10:33 PM]: The Yazoo Delta (Miss) comes from the Will Sarvis lecture, the "birthplace" of rock and roll/blues in the United States. Missile Gap = Sputnik 1957 Credibility Gap = LBJ and the American people during the Vietnam War, especially after Tet Friday, 5 June 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [06:30 AM]: Excellent! Thank you so much. I did find the birthplace of Rock and Roll in my notes...spelled wrong so the search and find feature, of course did not work. This has been a great class, I am looking forward to Fall and hearing how it all started. Thursday, 11 June 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [05:00 PM]: Hi, I was wondering if when you are done grading if you would have time to take a brief look at my final. I think a lot of the points I missed were on the map related questions and I was hoping you could let me know if that is the case. Once again I would just like to say this has been a great class and I am looking forward to taking 201 and the Vietnam class. I hope you have a wonderful summer. Thank you! Joe Escobar [05:34 PM]: I will definitely take a look and get back to you. Friday, 19 June 2009 Joe Escobar [03:56 PM]: Roxanne, Here's the quick run down of your final exam. True Correct "detente" is basically defined as a "thaw" - easing of tensions President Truman's greatest foreign policy success in Asia was his handling of China. His greatest failure was in Korea. False Correct Exactly the opposite... China was lost to communism, but S. Korea was preserved There is no argument over who started the Korean war. Without a doubt, this war was caused by the invasion of South Korea by the Communist backed North Koreans on June 25, 1950. Later, the Chinese Communists openly engaged in fighting on the side of the North Koreans. True Correct I hope this was an okay way to get a "review" of you final exam. Enjoy your summer, if you actually get one smile Roxanne MacDonald [08:23 PM]: Hi, Thank you so much for sending this and it was a great way to review the exam. I appreciate it. I hope you and your family have a wonderful summer and I will see you in the fall. Monday, 5 October 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [05:25 PM]: Wow! Was there ever a time period in our history that did not involve fighting, war and getting what was wanted by breaking the backs of others to get it? Chapter 2 was not quite the gentle story of the pilgrims landing and everyone sitting down for turkey and pumpkin pie I heard in school. I want to say Welcome back to classes and that I am quite happy to be in this class and am looking forward to a great term of informing with a bit of entertaining. Joe Escobar [06:57 PM]: Yep, we ruin many childhood stories this term. :) Welcome back to you, too. Wednesday, 7 October 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [02:08 PM]: Hi, The link for the textbook publisher website is great. Whatever issue my computer was having is gone, I am able to access the left side of the site now. I am curious as to how much you use or what you think of the different exercises on the site. I thought the crossword puzzle would be fun and the flash cards just demonstrated another reading of certain sections is in order! Joe Escobar [04:56 PM]: I plan to have students do an internet exercise or two (I'll be very selective about which ones), and these will probably serve as the basis of our historical topic discussions. My only real criticism is that the concentration game, crossword, flashcards, and glossary use the SAME publisher selected vocabulary words. I can't choose or add my own. I can't even get rid of those I don't plan to ever use. So my worry, in that regard, is that students will spend too much time learning "too much", not being tested on it, not having lecture about it, and becoming a bit frustrated (and rightfully so). Thursday, 15 October 2009 Joe Escobar [05:13 PM]: Quick check. I hope the list of group members and names looks okay now. Roxanne MacDonald [06:01 PM]: It looks just fine now. Thank you for correcting it. Tuesday, 20 October 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [02:20 PM]: Hi, I enjoyed the clip on Benjamin Franklin and would like to see it again. Is it possible to send me a link for it? If not, was it part of a series I am able to check out from the library? Thank you! Joe Escobar [03:38 PM]: https://teach.lanecc.edu/escobarj/201/1first/3web/15_biography_franklin.mov Friday, 23 October 2009 Joe Escobar [07:22 AM]: Here's that link. http://www.booktv.org/Watch/8774/The+Slave+Ship+A+Human+History.aspx Roxanne MacDonald [08:55 PM]: Thank you for the link on Marcus Rediker/The Slave Ship. Have a nice weekend! Sunday, 25 October 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [01:46 PM]: Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I have not heard anything from one member in our group and the other replied stating they would post by Friday and have not yet done so. I am prepared to take one question and Carina stated she could take the other one if need be. My qestion for you is this. At what point do we step in and post a response? I do not want to step on their toes should they decide to post at 8:00 pm tomorrow night however I do not like waiting until the last minute especially since I stated to the group I would check for spelling, grammar, formatting etc. It is driving me batty. Thank you for your time. Joe Escobar [07:39 PM]: I wouldn't wait and I'd go ahead and get things done. Moodle will "tell all" when it comes to showing me when students log in, how they communicate, and whether the contribute to the wiki or not. I'm guessing I know how you'll be "voting" when we have the feedback survey on Monday. sad Roxanne MacDonald [07:54 PM]: Well, one of the two just posted a bit ago and the other one stated they will do so tonight. I am going to proof read as soon as both answers are posted and go from there. You guessed right. I really did enjoy the previous terms assignments for the online portion but I am trying to be open to this, I know there are going to be classes in the future with group work. See you Tuesday. Tuesday, 27 October 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [07:28 AM]: Good Morning, When you have a moment could you please open quiz five back up? I need to take it a few more times. Thank you Thursday, 29 October 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [03:57 PM]: Hi, I can moodle message you on a couple of the terms I was hoping for clarification on. I just thought if you would be in your office I would stop by. I also had some questions about Britian/ Colonies that are not related to the mid-term so they can wait until later on. By the way, the video clips you were showing today...I got that series as a present earlier this summer. I really enjoyed it. I hope your daughter is feeling better soon. Joe Escobar [05:35 PM]: Hi Roxanne, It looks as though I WILL be on campus tomorrow, so let me know a time that works for you. Roxanne MacDonald [05:46 PM]: Would 12:00 be all right with you? I get out of math at 11:50. Thank you Joe Escobar [06:02 PM]: See you at noon. Friday, 30 October 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [06:17 PM]: Hi, If you have time would you be willing to look at slide 24 from Ch. 24. There is a big red arrow pointing at a line between MD and PA. There is a line I drew on my map but I neglected to label it in class. Is that the Mason-Dixon line? Thank you Roxanne MacDonald [06:18 PM]: Sorry, slide 24 from chapter 4. Joe Escobar [09:28 PM]: Yep, Mason Dixon line. Monday, 2 November 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [04:22 PM]: Hi, I was hoping to schedule a time next week to go over my mid-term. Are you available Tuesday or Thursday after class? No hurry getting back to me, I just wanted to get my request in. I know that you are busy with the mid-terms. Thank you Joe Escobar [04:32 PM]: Either day next week works for me. Pick a day and time. Roxanne MacDonald [06:28 PM]: Tuesday after class would be great. Thank you Joe Escobar [07:09 PM]: November 10, 2:30pm Roxanne MacDonald [08:09 PM]: Exactly! Sorry, I should have been more specific especially when you said date and time. I will be there. Thank you Wednesday, 11 November 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [11:13 AM]: Good Morning, The guidelines for the forum states that posts should not be rude or lacking civility. I have a response I wanted to post but I am not sure if it borders on rude. Do you have time to read it and let me know before I post it? It would help to have a guideline to base my future responses on. Thank you Joe Escobar [01:33 PM]: I'm pretty certain that you won't be rude, but sure, I can look at it. Moodle message it to me. Roxanne MacDonald [01:38 PM]: Thank you, I do appreciate it. Hi Damion, In regards to your posting I think a better suited word is Self-Interest rather than greed. Webster's defines greed as "a selfish and excessive desire for more of something (as money) than is needed." Slaves desiring freedom is not greed. Webster’s also defines Self-Interest as “a concern for one’s own advantage and well-being”. Slaves were absolutely concerned for their well being. Were the colonists and the founding fathers concerned for their well being and their own advantage? Of course they were, hence the American Revolution. Joe Escobar [01:50 PM]: Ahh, I just looked. You aren't planning on responding to Damion post, are you? While it leaves a bit to be desired, he is quickly going "off topic". I don't think you need to pursue him there. This too, depends on your definition of an outrageous post. I've read so many internet blogs that have truly had outrageous posts (and I'm sure this is influencing my point of view) that this one doesn't rise to that level yet for my immediate involvement. smile Joe Escobar [01:51 PM]: Just read your post. No problem at all, if you decide to reply. Joe Escobar [01:52 PM]: Hey, this is more fun than the wiki, isn't it? evil Roxanne MacDonald [02:02 PM]: That particular post got me fired up because I think there is a distinct difference between the two words, especially regarding slavery. It is getting off the topic though so I might be better off not replying. Thank you for looking at it. Yes, this is more fun than wiki! I salute your choice of topics. Joe Escobar [02:38 PM]: Enjoy the rest of your Veterans Day Roxanne MacDonald [02:56 PM]: History and Math....that is my whole day. I hope the rest of your day is enjoyable also. Thursday, 12 November 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [09:03 AM]: Good Morning, I am sorry but I cannot remember if you were available before class today. I am on my way to math and was planning on stopping by your office at 12. If you are not busy and can go over my mid-term great, if not I can come by later on today whenever you are available. Thank you Joe Escobar [09:34 AM]: Sure 12p will work. Thursday, 19 November 2009 Joe Escobar [11:36 PM]: Hi Roxanne, Who said diversity is a good thing? Ha! Sometimes when we mix age and wisdom with youthful entitlement, in community college classrooms, we unwittingly create other issues. I've just read your exchange with Brittanie, and the only reason I saw it is at this time is that she messaged me. START CONFIDENTIAL Without revealing too much, she wishes she had left things unsaid and is willing to accept any "punishment" I plan to give her for her unpleasant comments. In short, I've advised her to drop it. Here's a bit of the "positive part" of the reply I just sent to her. **** I do think that part of the problem lies in the limitations of "online written communication" via the internet. It's a reality that EVERYONE is going to have to deal with in one way or another. Also, I happen to know that both you and Roxanne are terrific students. Both of you are pursuing the goal of "real" learning in this class, and for that, I am thankful. **** So, FIRST, I wanted to let you know that you indeed hold the correct position about the issue at hand... I NEVER thought students would be judging the speaking voice of the lecturer. That was certainly not my point and pretty silly actually, but hey, sometimes an instructor never knows what they'll get in a forum. (Is the wiki looking good again?) SECOND, I wanted to send this message to you right away so you didn't let the exchange bother you any more than it might have already... especially if you might be stewing about it over the weekend. (I don't know if you are like me in that regard, but I'm pretty sure that's what I'd be doing. smile END CONFIDENTIAL Have a good weekend. Short week next week. Joe Friday, 20 November 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [08:21 AM]: Good Morning, Thank you for your message. I had no intention of posting anything further last night and did not see Brittanie's message until this morning. I did not post my original message to her directly, and I was not trying to single out a specific person. There have been four people who have made comments regarding the audio interview. I did not expect quite the backlash from her. I read my post several times before posting it to make sure it was not directly addressing anyone but I can see, where with her previous posting history she would have taken it personally and been offended. It was not my intention to act like an instructor but I understand now, that she and maybe others will interpret it that way. Joe, I apologize for allowing this forum to get off topic in such a negative way and allowing myself to get drawn into such a ridiculous exchange. I hope you have a good weekend and I do appreciate the message this morning. Joe Escobar [09:20 AM]: Just to re-state (if I wasn't entirely clear before) You have nothing to apologize for. Your forum comments were correct and meant to nudge the others "back on track". I appreciate it. Roxanne MacDonald [09:34 AM]: Thank you, I hope you have a great weekend. Thursday, 26 November 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [07:05 PM]: Happy Thanksgiving. I hope it is a happy one for you and your family. I just wanted to let you know how sad and angry I was to read the post from Brian in group 8. I admire the way that you handled it in responding to his post. Taking history from you has opened a whole new world of learning for me and I will always be grateful that I had this opportunity. Joe Escobar [11:07 PM]: Thank you for the kind words Roxanne. I hope no one in your group decides to write a post like that one. And you made an excellent post by the way. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Tuesday, 1 December 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [07:25 PM]: Hi, When you have a chance could you please open quiz eight back up? Thank you Joe Escobar [10:24 PM]: Sorry. Thought I did that already. Thursday, 10 December 2009 Roxanne MacDonald [07:46 AM]: Good Morning, WOW, over 800 students. Did everyone (including myself) wait until the last day? I cannot be there until 11 and I have two exams to take. I am about to hit the panic button. Do you think 11 will be all right or might there be a line outside, down the four flights of stairs? Joe Escobar [08:52 AM]: 11a should be just fine. It's the 4pm'ers that I'm worried about.
