Even though most of the original 49ers who rushed to California were men in search of gold, families were the predominant westward migrants on the overland trails. Most of these people were in agreement with the ideology of the Free Soilers. This can be seen by that fact that, although the territorial legislatures of Utah and New Mexico legalized slavery, few slaves were ever brought there.

The 1850's are significant for the changes that various events caused to the existing political system. For example, the debates over the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the application of popular sovereignty destroyed the Whig Party. In fact, the resulting debate over the acceptance or rejection of the Lecompton Constitution seriously split the Democratic Party into northern and southern factions. This would allow the Republicans, who were the first truly sectional party in American history, having support only within the northern, non-slave states, to win the presidential election in 1860.
