Did you use your computer, tablet, or smartphone to electronically subscribe to the Google calendar that was made specifically for this class, which included all important class dates, such as forum start and stop deadlines, initial post and final reply deadlines, and exams?
NOTE: I am talking about officially subscribing to the Google calendar, which provides you with automatic updates and reminders. This is not the same as just clicking the calendar link in Moodle, which you have to actively and repetitively do on your own initiative.

Can you elaborate on your answer above?
Few students ever take advantage of office hours during the term. And I know that cannot be because the "times don't work for your schedule". I made it clear that I would be willing to meet with students on any day of the week, at any time I was not already in the classroom.
So, if you never had an interaction with me outside of class, was it because my presentation was so crystal clear that you didn't need the help, and are already earning a high grade in the class. Was it because you were shy? Did I seem unapproachable? Did you just not make the effort? Did we take care of all of your questions or concerns over Moodle messaging?
If you did speak with me outside of class, was it worthwhile or helpful? What information could you choose to share with me?
I plan to share some of your anonymous answers with students next term. I do pride myself on being available to students. The times I spent with my own college professors during office hours were generally very rewarding and insightful, so I'd like to be the same type of resource for you. I'm hoping your input will help me to do just that.

All the above helped me in some way, some more than others. |

It was helpful |
I did not have any interaction with the instructor |
Most of my questoins were anwsered in class the next day. |
On several occasions I shared personal stories that related to the material that was just went over in class, while perhaps not important academically those moments help me to see how interested and enjoyable the teacher/professor was, which is important in keeping a student motivated during the term. |
I always felt you were not just approachable, but eager to engage with any questions about the class material or related material to what we were learning. I really appreciated being able to come to you after class feeling like I could ask questions no matter how specific or mundane regarding the course and history in general. |
I never met with you outside of class, but mostly just because I never felt like I needed it and everything was covered well in class. You always seemed very approachable and we had a few short conversations right after class but I never felt the need for more than that. |
I had some cool conversations with the Professor after class relating to forum 4, the class that day, and about my advisor and major. |
I personally had interactions outside out class, except for right after class, I never came to office hours simply because my schedule was so packed and i never really needed too! |
you seem very scary and the one time i talked to you out of class i ended up crying as soon as i left because i was intimidated by you. |
I didn't have interactions with you outside of class time, mostly because I'm very socially awkward. Though I wish I did mostly because I want to be a history teacher and wanted to ask some questions about that. |
I did not feel the need to take advantage of the office hours but I know that if I would have needed to Joe would have been available. He made that very clear at the beginning of the term. |
I never went to see you because I never felt like I need extra help on something. The way that you taught the class I felt like I had enough resources that answered any questions that I had. Whether it was during our class lecture or from the our textbook or the videos that we watched. |
Any questions or concerns were taken care of through Moodle messaging. |
I just didn't make the effort too, but wish I would of because my grade is suffering. |
I never went to speak with you after class for a couple reasons. One being that learning in class is very straightforward. The lectures are at a good speed and in a good order, and a student could certainly ask to go back if needed. A second reason being that I was already getting a grade I was satisfied with and I had no further questions. Although I never needed help outside of class, you definitely came across as someone that students could go and talk to. |
I talked with you after class about the career path I was pursuing as it was similar to yours. I never felt the need to take advantage of office hours personally. |
Your presentations were clear And I’m shy so I don’t talk much outside of class |
I just never took the initiative to meet outside of class. |
I am a pretty shy person. I ask questions in class but I never made the effort to meet with my instructors during office hours. If I have questions, I'll tend to want to figure them out myself. |
Never went to office hours. |
I felt like I was doing adequate in the class, didn't feel like I needed to ask any questions besides the ones asked in class. The lectures went over the majority of the content required for the tests, and the content not covered was covered in the online quizzes. |
Well, for one, I'm pretty antisocial, I'm very shy, and I don't like talking to people. The one time I did need to talk was after I'd sent an email, and was requested to remain. Other than that, I'd either leave class right away, or I'd stay around in the Center. You're very nice, and it was pretty embarrassing to talk about voice recording... But I understand, people really can be that bad... |
I have social anxiety, so going to see my professor isn't exactly something makes me comfortable; meeting with anyone is not common for me in the first place. |
I didn’t need the help |
Didn't really communicate with the instructor through out the term. |
Any questions I had were answered in class when other students asked the question or in moodle. I am also shy around people and it takes me a while getting used to a person one on one. So I usually don't talk to other people and kept to myself. |
I talked to the teacher a couple times through email |
I am shy, and generally do not talk to my instructors outside of class. Escobar does seem approachable though. |
I was shy to meet the instructor outside of class time. But sometimes I also send questions via moodle, and that was really helpful. |
You seem smart and approachable. Your use of moodle was the clearest I've ever experienced, thank you. I'm . . . an introvert. I'm working on it. But I do avoid face to face interaction. |
I didn’t use office hours because most questions I had could be answered via email. If I had had a challenge I would have been comfortable visiting during office hours, but I never felt the need to. |
I do tend to be shy and don't like to appear as someone who doesn't understand something. I've learned throughout this course, I need to approach you with questions especially in terms of forums. I do like history and have appreciated this class and will continue on throughout the year. It is sometimes difficult and I am going to do my best to take advantage of meeting with you next term. You are a good instructor and I've learned a lot. I only wish in spite of the effort I've put in, I would have met with you instead of taking time which hasn't always been to my advantage, to ask questions. Thank you for all you do. |
I never went to you because I am shy but mainly I understood the material being taught even if my test scores don't always reflect that. |
I stayed after class one day to go over a lesson I had missed and Professor Escobar told me I was the only kid in 10 years to stay after and go over a lesson that they missed. I was surprised at this and happy that I could have an impact on my professor. |
Honestly I did not apporach this teacher at all and the few times I did. It was he was reacting to a "question" I probabbly had which at times again didn't feel like he answered it. |
I am a shy person. However, I thought the presentations were pretty clear and I didn’t really have any questions on the material. I thought you were very clear on the “you need to know this” stuff and so far I have an A in the class. I also voice recorded the lectures in order to go back and listen to them again if I needed to. Time isn’t something I have a lot of with full time school, part time work, and single parenting. So, if I did have questions, I probably would have utilized time before class or by moodle messaging. |

A number class materials were "handed out" online (maps, pdfs, audio, video, text, links to websites). How easy was it for you to access these materials?

Do you have any other comments about the online materials or suggestions for any changes I should consider?

Very easy and very helpful |
as long as you had reliable internet access, pretty easy |
Very easy, no further comment. |
I liked being able to have a printed out and online version of the handouts, it made it much easier to keep track of the information, and how I was accountable to it. |
very easy to access papers |

Very easy, the online portion is very important and you made it very clear and easily accessible |

It was very easy to access the materials online. |
These materials were easy to access other than moodle being slow. |
handouts were easy to come in contact with. However I would suggest maybe elaborating the forum post grading a bit more |
I did not have any problems with said materials. |
Very Easy. The links always worked. |
The videos were a little hard to access because they did not play in my browser, I had to download them to watch them. All other material was easy to get/view. |
These were very easy to read and access. |
I have a Chromebook, so not all of it was accessible and I had to borrow a different laptop to do some things. |
Maps are quite specific and easy to learn and remember. For me, the forum "essays" are too much and hard to understand, I had to spend a lot of time for reading. |
Very easy to access, and appreciated. All the links worked, you saved trees, and I didn't lose them. |
This class obviously is in someways difficult, but enjoyable. All you provide has been easily accessible, but I now know I need to access everything in order to be successful. |
They were very easy to access all of these materials. |
It would have been VERY EASY IF the instuctor gave you the option on the GOOGLE DOC to either make copies or print them. If not you had to go to each class to get a physical copy of any of the material online. |
I thought it was very easy to access the materials. I only had an issue with the Alexander Hamilton video, which was solved after I downloaded the video. I like the format of the online material. It’s very organized and I really liked that, especially the “this is mandatory,” and ”this is what’s due.” |

In my opinion, certain online assignments were given to provide both a learning experience and a grading "gift" to students. To my dismay, a number of students failed to complete the computer quizzes and opinion polls. Instead of being an easy way to earn 20% of the grade in this class, this "gift" assignment actually hurt the grades of some students. Answering for yourself only, can you provide me any thoughts you may have on the matter?
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
They were easy to keep up with those students just suck. -the dude who got them all done on time and if i got 16 i would try again and get 20 |
To be honest, I don't know what to think. At first it was difficult for me to remember them, however, as the term went on, it got easier. |
i like the system and found it very helpful |
Laziness |
I dont thinkt this should change. I think it just comes to show who really care and who doesnt. Then again, I was one of the ones who didnt do one of the polls but simply because I forgot. So Im not sure what can be done about the matter because its each individual's responsibility but I think it is very generous on your part to put these as ways to get easy points. If others dont take advantage of it, Its their issue. |
At least for me I did all of these quizes and most of the opinion polls so I dont believe this hurt my grade much. |
My issue with failing to complete assignments did not come in the form of the class quizzes, but rather in the form of the online forums, of which I only responded to one with a half hearted answer. This had nothing to do with the structure of teaching of the class, but lies with my, excuse the language, fucked up schedule. |
While I was very upset with myself that I did not understand using moodle until the end of the first week when I had missed the deadline of the first opinion poll, that was completely my fault. On average I overwhelmingly appreciated the way you had set up the online quiz/poll system. To be honest it took away some of the pressure I had trying to absorb every sentence of the chapter and instead I was able to learn the subject matter more organically, and therefore understood it far better in the context of the class. I was incredibly thankful for the way you set up the grading system with the quizzes and forums not just for the sake of getting full credit, but more for the fact that I felt it encouraged me more to analyze and interpret the material as opposed to just drilling memorization. |
I cannot answer for this as I believe I completed all of these on time. |
I think it was super simple doing the quizzes once a week I mean all the answers are in the text book you can even find the answers online like google. |
I think the quizes were awesome. You had multiple chances and only needed a 70% |
I did most of them myself but the reminders would be better used if they were sent out around 6pm because that is when most people ive talked to get off work or out of practise and the email sent at like 2pm will get lost in the spiral of emails we get all the time fro teachers students and lcc. |
I don't have any thoughts on that. |
I found that these helped my grade. I did forget one opinion poll but that was my own fault and not because I didn't have adequate reminders from the professor. |
It's very easy its just about a student taking advantage of it. |
For me, I would forget about the quiz and then try to do it last minute. |
I think that the quizzes need to be worth more to motivate students to study harder for them. |
I completed all polls and every computer quizzes and it didn't take me very long to complete them. I would say that students who completed 90-70% are just forgetful and need to find a way to remind themselves that every Monday night there is a quiz due. Those who got below a 70% are likely lazy or have extreme circumstances that prohibited them from completing. Like I said though, it didn't take me all that much time. Perhaps 40 minutes for a chapter I was having trouble with but usually 10-20 minutes. |
I had no trouble completing these usually, so I appreciated it. |
Elaborating on how the forums are grading and not just saying participation because that can mean different things to different people |
Some students were most likely lazy and felt these could be skipped. |
I found myself having a hard time forming opinions for the forums out of fear of being wrong. I did not know enough about the topics even when I did the required readings. |
Assignments were fair. |
The quizzes are very important to do. They helped gauge whether I knew what was going on in the class and what I was reading in the textbook. Not only that, but many of the questions in the quizzes were on the midterm. I am not sure why everybody could not do them. |
For me, I would leave these computer quizzes to the last minute on Monday, where I would have the book open next to me. Instead of hunting for the answers, I'd read the chapter, and if I came across something that was relevant to the quiz or a question on there, I'd stop to read the page or section, and then find the answer. It took some quizzes multiple tries, as I had left them for so long, but I didn't see anything wrong with them. |
Answering the quizzes wasn't always easy. I found a ch 13 answer on the ch 9 quiz, so sometimes I'd have to look else where than the book for answers to the quiz question |
Giving students a free be might help because I forgot about one quiz and it dropped my grade a lot |
Giving students freedom like that may lead to them neglecting their easy points. It happened to me, especially with the Forum posts. |
I think those online assignments are easy and are "gift" assignments. Those students don't care enough about the class or their gade to do it |
not clear enough instruction about the assignments which were extra credit or optional or maybe dificult to access. |
There is pretty much no reason to not earn full points on these assignments, you can easily pass the quizzes as long as you read the chapter, and the polls are even easier with no reading required. |
I think your "gift" was such a good chance for students. To earn a full 20% of the grade is extremely hard, all the thing we just do are login, click our chosen, and complete them, so it might depend on student's diligent. In addition, midterm and final are not easy to earn an A+ unless students study hard, so a "gift" from you seems like EXTRA credits. |
They are fools. I was extremely grateful for the credit, but it also helped me sort of learn how to navigate moodle. I mean, uploading your pic? How hard is that? I bombed the first test because I had a panic attack. But I tried really hard all term, did all the little stuff, and know what to expect on the final so I know I'll do better. |
When it’s an “easy a/points” opportunity, if people don’t take advantage that’s their loss. I think it’s good to give some points to fluff grades a bit here and there but if people don’t participate that’s their loss. It’s still nice to offer for others that want to go above and beyond and get those points. |
I think it is amazing and very
generous. I need to earn all of
the extra percentages possible.
I think it might be because they didn't fully realize how much of an impact on their grade not doing those assignments had even though you clearly explained that the first week of class. |
I liked these "gifts" I do all my homework so it helped me. |
More notifications, including emails and moddles messages. Also if the INSTRUCTOR were to mention KEY dates for quizes. |
I think it is a nice gift. I made sure to do the quizzes and online polls each week in order to get those “free” points. I think if students would just do the work assigned, you wouldn’t be asking this question. I think those who don’t do the work are either lazy or just don’t really care about their grade, or maybe they don’t care about the subject but are required to take the class? Either way, you can’t force them to do the work. I appreciate the gift and the opportunity for extra points. |

I enjoyed reading the discussions in the Forums. They were supposed to be a way for all students (even shy ones who never like to speak up in class) to participate online. But as you may have seen or read for yourself, a number of students did not participate, briefly posted a single time, or failed to put forth a thoughtful effort which included data from the weekly reading/watching/listening materials. The way I see it, if you simply get involved, this should be another easy A+ grade, just like the weekly quizzes.
In the past, I tried this with little or no grade points assigned to it. As you can imagine, few participated. So currently, I have put a very substantial 20% of your grade at stake in this forum assignment. Participation was better than before the 20%, but too many students still fail to participate. I am certainly inclined to keep this assignment for the benefit of the students who participated. There were some really deep and thoughtful discussions, perhaps better than we could have had in class. And I know more students "spoke up" online than do in class.
Help me to understand and/or provide me with any relevant feedback on this matter? If you were one of the students who failed this activity, please let me know what the issues were? If you were one of those who passed or "aced" this activity, what feedback do you have for me?

The forums are fun however not everyone participates and some just throw out 4 post on the last night |

As of right now, I do not have any. |

they were interesting, i found it easy |

Too time consuming |

I was one of the students who always
participated and I thought this was a
very great assignment. The only issue
i had was that you had mentioned that
we wouldnt have to do any seperate
research on our own but there were
topics that I didnt really know about
which led me to do some extra research
on the web. For someone who doesnt
really have an interest in history and
has trouble with vert high vocabulary,
there were some topics that I had a
bit of trouble with nd had to do alot
of extra research to be able to make a
proper post. |
For some of the forums the topics either didnt intrest me as much as others or were almost too difficult which kind of made me not want to complete them right from the start. |

Coming from one of the students that abjectly failed the online forum, the concept wasn't bad, the topics bit dull, the main issue was a lack of time in my case. |
I was a bit surprised how little some people participated. Very few times did I ever have anyone comment or engage with my posts. However, what I appreciated was that my grade was not dependent on whether or not other students did what they were supposed to or not. In fact the truth is that by having other students barely engage, or post obviously rushed not well thought out posts... I was able to gage my understanding of the material more, and determine where I stood in regards to my comprehension of not just the facts and figures, but spirit of what we were learning. If I had one observation I would admit that the first two forums dealt with religion either in the context of the puritans, or "The Great Awakening". I was a bit hesitant to say the wrong thing or put myself in a situation where I could open myself up to harsh criticism when discussing religion with a group of people who might not share my beliefs or ideals. I thought the assignment was great, and in regards to both forum#1 and #2 I would argue that a stance could be taken (and I did) that didn't ever require divulging personal beliefs. However, some of the posts immediately blurred other students strong religious convictions with the topic we were discussing which I was very reluctant to engage with. This was nothing that stopped me from getting involved, or doing the work how you assigned it, it was just an observation of why I felt a bit awkward at times responding to certain posts. |
I was not really clear about exactly how the forums were graded. Was it simply on the number of posts you made or the content of your posts? I felt I always answered the forum question very thoughfully and would try to participate as much as I could throughout the week but many other days in the week I am very busy so I could not always post. My grades for the forum were never quite what I thought they should be so I wasn't sure how much the content mattered or if it was just how many times you post. |
interesting material, there was at times a lot of material to comprehend which got confusing at times, easy to post on time, valid way of grading, topics matched what we learned in class for the most part, groups I don't think groups affected me a lot, and I think it was worth my time I learned from it I would say the first forum post was hard because I didn't understand the material because of the way the authors addressed their claims and worded their articles. |
I personally had a hard time understandong the forums. I tried extremly hard yet seemed to always get bad grades which is on me 100% i think that you do a great job emphasizing the importance of it, but as a student who is busy from 8 to 8 everyday with school, sports, extracurricular. It was hard for me to keep up on it, not by lack of trying however! |
I did not understand how to write the post and the only classes with anything like this before was highly stuctured 3 part essays due with no responding to others so this was very stressful and hard to understand and made compleating it hard. |
The main reason I kind of flopped on the forums was I didn't find them that interesting, except for the cartoon one, but besides that I kept forgetting about it and didn't make many posts outside of my first one. |
I think one of the issues I faced is just timing during the week to be posting even every other day. Not only am I a full time student but I also work 30-40 hours a week. Sometimes forum posts get forgotten in the mix. |
As one of the students that struggled on the forums, For me, it was the scoring post. Not the way that they were scored but that I didn't know why or what was bad about my post. If there is a way to get some feedback on the post I think that would help. I also think that it has to do with more of a lack of effort. |
For me, I had never done an online forum before this class. It would have probably been helpful if there was an example post the instructor put up so people would kind of know what they should be putting up in the forum. That was I think one of my biggest challenges was not knowing really what kind of post I should be creating. |
It was worth my time and effort. I just think that having a single, complex question about a certain topic will motivate students more to work on them. I think thay a scoring scale of 1 to 4 would give students more motivation to do well on them, with 1 being not completed at all, to 4 being excellent. |
I didn't do as well on the forums this term as I would've liked. My grade on them though is a reflection of my own participation, effort, and memory. The forums are great for learning and the topics are generally interesting. I wouldn't say there is anything wrong with the forums, I would say that some of the students don't put in enough effort (myself included unfortunately). |
I personally had no trouble with this, and from what I saw I was usually the one commenting the most. One problem I had was the stipulation about posting regularly throughout the week, as I have a job that ends quite late in the day. So I ended up doing the majority of my work on it on the final day except for the initial post on Monday. Another aspect I found a little unclear personally was how initial posts and comments were graded. I understand it can't be laid out easily how much credit you get, but I often was unsure if I was doing enough work on a post to get full credit. |
Lack of materials or instructions as to what the post is supposed to talk about. Many times I’d post something but that wasnt “what was supposed to be talked about” however that’s what I got from it. |
First of all, on one occasion my forum session “timed out” as I was submitting the post resulting in hours of lost work. I felt that the grading rubric was unclear and I wasn’t entirely sure the necessary criteria for receiving each score. Other then that forum assignments were ok. |
I was underachieving with the forums. I found I never knew enough about the topic even after viewing the reading, video, or podcast. Therefore I was nervous about sharing an opinion. |
I think that a certain amount of post per week with a certain length met should guarantee a certain letter grade. |
I felt the forums were tedious and took too much time to complete. After posting once I felt like I had completed the activity. Replying to other classmates was hard because the majority of students would just reply to one post that was well thought out, and the rest of the posts were short and did not have anything to reply to. |
For me, I was way too confused as to what I needed to do, these forums were more of a pain to participate in, I tried what I thought was quality over quantity of posts the first time, and that didn't go well, then I just tried doing all 5 posts to get the full credit, that didn't work either, so I was just super unsure as to what I had to do... Somehow I got the golden 6 on this most recent one, and I still don't know what I did right... |
I don't know about others, but doing a long, researched post and long researched response is a lot of work for a full time student who works and has a family to maintain. I struggled with balancing this level of work, compared to my other classes. |
The topic only interested me for the first 1 or 2 posts |
I feel like there may be too many to complete and interact with it on a regular basis. As, for me, if I didn't do it one day or two days in a row, then it felt like I wouldn't get enough out of it to be worth my time and effort in the posts. Some of the topics weren't interesting in general to engage with some of the time, and formulating a solid argument for the forum posts became a bit tedious when it came to drawing synthesis to another event on the topic. And I would believe it would be awkward for someone to debate someone on a specific matter, as today debates aren't seem to be in the "good faith" sphere of thinking like they used to be, and actually debating someone feels to be more awkward in general. Though this all depends on the person too! |
I think for the most part those students failing either don't really understand how to do it or that they just don't care to try it seriously. |
forums were dificult to figure out as they have access diferently depending on what device pr laptop is being used. too many links to get to the materials or comments. |
The group size was nice, and I like how there is a mix of people in each group. Meaning some people who earn A's to those who choose to not participate. I do think that there should be a half point given to anyone who cites a reliable source and who makes a specific argument. This way if you can't earn a full point you will at least earn something because you at least put some effort in. |
I always online to follow up any notification from instructor. This is the first time I took part in a forum during course, sometimes it's quite strange to me, but I'm still keep in touch to instructor and friends. About the materials, they are suitable enough to this course because its History class. Deadlines, topics are both perfect for students to complete on time. |
Like I said, I don't speak up in class much. But I like YOUR moodle discussions. I can write something, think about it, proofread, and not be afraid that I'll say something stupid. It was hard to embrace arguing with the other students, because we were all . . . polite. But I had no problem responding to the prompts and incorporating what I learned, plus sources. I did feel like I had a voice because of this. Your prompts were clear also. The materials were just right - I do have one class that has so many resources posted it's overwhelming. I think I looked at every single resource you posted. |
My biggest challenge was always making the first post in the forum and then feeling discouraged from posting late since I’d lose points anyway. I understand the point of having a first post deadline, but something about having it on Monday when we didn’t have class just threw my mental schedule off so I was late or didn’t post more times than not. |
They are at times difficult, but I have always completed the forums. I was disappointed to put so much time and effort on the last forum, but didn't do well? Maybe I wrote too much, didn't "get it," but believed I did, or who knows? I only wish since I did four of them and they were long and a bit difficult to understand in areas, I worked really hard. I think it may have been not as interesting as others. Thanks for understanding. |
I liked the forums but I think that there is a lot of pressure to make those 6 points, especially with the first post and not seeing other peoples responses. I felt a lot of pressure to make that first post because I was unsure of my response and I wish I could have seen other peoples responses to see if what I was thinking was actually correct or if I was completely of track. |
Although I posted multiple times every week and attempted to engage in meaningful discussion I still did not receive full credit on any of the forums. In my opinion the forums were not significant enough be worth that much percent. |
The forum is a great idea in theory but terrible in pratice. The clearest example, the guidelines of the assingment. Instead of presenting questions to answer, if you were to list an amount of information and referernces you want in a post, followed by a broad question. Then in my opinion it could or better welcome students to tackle the forums with new idea and different prespectives. The rule where you cannot see other peoples posts before your own is helpful, however the scoring. The 1-3 scale doesnt tell much and the feedback from the scaling can be CONFUSING. However applied to a 1-10, then in my opinion it becomes easier. Also the amount of the information can be overwelling since it can be either too much or again CONFUSING. |
I feel that I was one who did well in this area. It was sometimes hard for me to participate throughout the week because of other school work, life, work, parenting, etc. but I managed. Not all of my posts received points, because I felt like I had to really analyze and put a lot of time and effort into the forum posts, where other class‘ forums posts don‘t require quite as much time and effort, and there isn’t enough hours in a day for me to do all the things I need to. |

How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook itself AND the extent to which the instructor incorporated the textbook into the course? (too much, too little, just right, felt good about having to buy it, etc.?)
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
I enjoyed the reading |
The book was a bit much for my liking at the beginning of the year, however, when I found out that the book will be used for the next two History classes, it didn't sound so bad. |
Very satisfied |
I thought it was a great text book for this course! |
The textbook was one of the better ones I have read and found the information eaiser to understand and more relevant to the quizes and tests as opposed to other textbooks I have read. |
The textbook was well incorporated into the learning experience of the class. Class lecture was not just a retreading of what was learned in the book, but rather easily connected to what was read in the book. This helped to keep the class fresh and reinforce important information. |
I didn't have any strong opinions either way. I felt the textbook was naturally incorporated into class. I appreciated the fact that while the textbook was at times a bit wordy (like any college textbook) when we would go over the material in class you always broke it down into a easily digestible version of the material. I felt like having read the chapter beforehand when we would discuss it in class you would focus in on what you felt was most important, and what we needed to know. I will admit walking into the class before I knew about the e-book version I was very nervous about having to buy a very expensive textbook. However, I paid less then 20 dollars for a very easy to read version that I was able to access at home in the library or even on my phone during long waits on errands. The digital version made owning the book incredibly simple, and for a person who looks at a huge book and gets a bit of anxiety, it helped put my tensions at ease. Truthfully I hope all my classes from now on will have an E-book format... I vastly prefer it! |
I have a hard time with history text books and this one seemed very dense and dry to me at parts. |
I think some of the chapters were quite long but easy to understand and the professor used the books within the lectures for data, facts and even called out some of the textbooks claims/facts. |
I thought the textbook was definetly worth the money. I had the e textbook and could look up certain sections. Definetly worth it. We used it for every quiz in class and for studying. Definetly utalized more than i have for any other class. |
Its okay, he did a good job class time was fun and engaging. if you dont requre this exact new book and older versions are okay to use please tell people because there are places to get the old version for free and that would save some kids money they need for food. |
I thought the text book was a fine read, and I thought the instructor used it well in class. |
I felt we used the textbook a lot in the course. It was needed for studying purposes for the tests and as a second source for forums. |
I thought the quality was good, however, I think the textbook read a lot like a textbook which made it harder to stay engaged when reading. |
It was just right. |
The textbook was in very good quality, though i wish we could of done some reading inside of class to motivate students to read outside of class as well. |
I think it is a quality textbook, and like you said, you wouldn't have picked it if it wasn't. You also said that you would use the textbook in class and you certainly followed up on that. I would say that the book is a must have for class and to try and go through without it is a mistake. I felt confident purchasing the book. |
To be honest I read the textbook very rarely beyond finding the answers to quizzes and did perfectly fine. Though it is likely a bad habit to get into. The textbook was understandable but often very boring and dry, especially with the long chapters. |
There’s too much to read and take notes because what you think is important isn’t always what’s “Actually” important or should be focused on but how are we supposed to know? |
Textbook was satisfactory, professor used It well. |
I thought the book was very thorough. Sometimes I felt it was too detailed to the point where I did not know what was important and what wasn't. |
Very satisfied. |
The textbook was easy to read, the instructor's lectures followed the textbook thoroughly. Definitely just the right amount of textbook incorporation into the lectures. |
I rented it as it was cheaper than buying the textbook. I book itself is heavy but interesting. |
Some of the quiz questions, while reading the book I could almost find the answer, but not exactly or I'd have to go fin a calculator to do the math and figure it out. |
I didn't really read the textbook to be quite honest. I went to the lectures, and had some off hand knowledge on the time period to do somewhat good on the tests and quizzes. But history comes easy to me, but reading the textbook was interesting and gave good knowledge on the subject. However, some of the criticisms in the class might seem a little too confusing for students, as once or twice I was confused as if we should keep the knowledge we gained on the chapter if it seemed wrong. |
For me just right |
I am glad that the textbook was used weekly because that makes it worth buying. The textbook can be confusing but once it is explained better in class it all makes sense. |
Some materials in textbook are difficult to relate to quizzes. |
About what I expected. |
The chapters were a little heavy and kind of boring. I love history and some books have drawn me in but this one always put me to sleep. I also found that there were errors in the answers to some of the quizzes which left me a bit concerned. I didn’t like that we spent so much time on comparing the old text to the current text. I feel like time would have been better spent covering the materials and maybe drawing different points from different historians instead of confusing the text. |
Truthfully, the textbook chapters are very long and the print is small. It is important to read, but takes a long time to go through chapters and take notes. I do appreciate that you did incorporate the textbook into your history class. Just wish it was a bit easier to spend time on. |
I felt that the book itself was a bit hard to read just because of the size of the chapters but the way you incorporated the text into the lecture was great and made it easier to understand. |
It was pretty boring at times but very informative |
Ehh if the instructor were to touch on specific points of history instead of specific lines of the history book. Maybe it could be qualified that he incorprated the book. Also sum of the questions again specific sentence answer to not only the quizes but the exams as well. |
The textbook was generally fairly easy to read. It’s just a LOT of reading. Due to my schedule and other assignments from other classes due dates, I generally would have to read an entire chapter on Monday and take the quiz in the evening. Which is hard to sit and read thirty pages of History in one sitting and be able to keep events and things straight. I thought the amount the instructor incorporated the textbook into the course was more than any other class; however, I feel like it helped my understanding and I felt like reading the book was an important part (and not a waste of time), so then I understood what was talked about in class. I think it was a perfect amount. |

If asked by another student whether or not they should take this course with this specific instructor, what would you say? (Remember, this survey is anonymous, so I'd appreciate your candor/honesty.)

Joes the best teacher at lcc |
I would tell them that you have to be on your feet when it comes to the quizzes and forums since they come up quick. I would also say that the instructor is there for you, if you need anything, just let them know. |
Very recommended. Easy to learn and very direct |
I actually was asked already and I told them they should take a history class with professor escobar! |
I cant say how good of an instructor you were compared to others at LCC but you have been one of the best if not the best history teachers I have had so far. |
The pace of the class can feel quick, and the breadth of the information wide, this can be intimidating. The teacher is open and helpful, however, entering into the class the first time and meeting the teacher, he can give off an authoritarian persona that makes him seem like hes not. |
I would let them know that this is a class good for someone who is at least mildly interested in taking a history class, and amazing for someone who finds history fascinating. As a teacher I felt you cared, and could pick up on your desire to share something you were personally engaged in with us students. I would explain that the way the class breaks down as far as grading goes as a teacher you make it very difficult to not pass the class. In regards to the midterm, and I assume the final they are definitely not easy tests (quite the opposite). However, with your current grading system, and the fact that 60% of the grade comes down to participation, and just putting forth the minimal effort to get full credit, you've created a system that you could literally get a 50/100 on both major tests and still get a B. Therefore, my main comment about your class (which I emphatically appreciate by the way) would be that your tests aren't easy, and ive definitely had to make a commitment and put energy into getting an A. However, it would takes equal effort and energy to not pass, and get a D or F. On a personal note you've made coming back to school after a long hiatus in life, a total pleasure and made me eager for what comes next. If the rest of my teachers are at all passionate the way you are or make coming to class anywhere near as engaging, and interesting I will be a very lucky student! |
I would definitely recommend the instructor. I really enjoyed your class and the way you presented the information. I would not likely recommend the hybrid class if the person is similar to me. I just feel like it did not work best for the way I learn and I would have preferred a longer class with you and less time on the computer. |
I would say this instructor would be your best choice for taking the class he doesn't bull shit his teaching he is 100% real with his class and teaches you the correct history of what happened in the U.S. but its an independent class so if your more of a hands on group work kind of person don't take a hybrid class. |
I would say to take it if you had a lot of time to regularly study during the week. I personally only have time during the weekends so thats when i get my work done, but this class requires a lot of time during the week. So if you have it TAKE IT!!! Awesome instructor who really prioritizes learning! |
teachers good forums could use some work on explaining but otherwise its fine. |
I would tell them to take it, the instructor is likable and easy to listen too, just make sure to do the forums. |
Honestly I enjoyed Joe Escobar's class a lot.I am taking 202 next term and am looking forward to it. |
I would recommend this class. I would say the Professor it good and if you put in the effort the class is easy. the class is set up for you to succeed. |
I would say, "If you are looking for a hybrid History 201 class definitely take Joe Escobar's class. He makes it fun, the assignments aren’t actually that difficult, if you do them and he replies fast to any messages on Moodle." |
I would tell them they should take this class to get a better feel for American History during the late 18th to early 19th century. |
I would tell them to absolutely take this class. You are an excellent instructor and any student taking this class SHOULD take away a massive amount of wisdom. This specific section of US history is crucial and if I could, I'd make it a core requirement for graduates. |
I enjoyed it personally, but if you aren't inclined towards history it will likely be boring. |
Very good instructor, has a very good view on history and isn’t afraid to say what needs to be said and clear things up that most people got wrong. Reading the next book and very important but theres A LOT of it. |
Take this course if you benefit from engaging material and aren’t easily offended. |
I would recommend Joe Escobar. He is knowledgable about the subject and wants to help you succeed. |
If they like history I would recommend it. |
If they were interested in the subject or had to complete a requirement to graduate/transfer I would recommend taking it. |

I'd totally recommend this course! I'd just warn them about the forums, which was the hardest part for me. I still am pretty clueless about what is "right" to post. I really do have a good understanding of the "wrong" posts though. |
The teacher does know the history and is excited and knowledgeable about this course/history, and tries to make it interesting to those not normally interested in history. |
It’s a good course as long as you try |
I'd tell them to take it. The instructor was intelligent, funny, and a joy to have teach! And the subject materiel was an added bonus to the enjoyability of the class! |
I would say that He has easy to understand lectures and he does what he said he would do and doesn't throw curves balls at you at the last second. He will tell you if there are any changes beforehand. |
beware the forums can be tricky to figure out. I liked him alright, wish he could maybe respond faster but i understand i am only one student out of about 100 and some. |
This class requires work. If you are prepared for that then this will be a very good class. It is easier, and more fun than other history classes I have taken. I recommend this specific class because the instructor is very straight forward. You are never confused about assignments or deadlines. He is easy to communicate with you, and if he sees you have done something in a wrong way he will notify you soo that you can fix it. I have not had another teacher who puts in as much effort into his students as Escobar does. |
I would suggest my friends to take this course, because there are many things about U.S we have not known yet. It would be really helpful for the making progress knowledge. |
I suck at taking tests, so I was very grateful that other things were considered. I would take this class because it was CLEAR - what was due, what to do, how ot do it. You are a great storyteller and I enjoyed the lectures. I would, no, I will, tell my sister to take this class. |
I would ask them what they’re wanting from the class. If they want an “easy a” and light work load I would tell them not to take it. But if they enjoy history and want to learn more about it and have the time and energy to devout to reading and forums then I would say take it. I like the organization and most of the class. I just didn’t enjoy the reading and forums as much. |
Certainly be prepared to study a lot, don't miss class and work hard. The instructor is great and is very fair in regard to earning extra points. |
I would tell them to take it but know that there is a good amount of work that if not completed or getting a bad grade would affect their overall grade in the class. |
I would say yes if you are interested in history. The professor is great but it is a good amount of work and reading. If you are interested in history you will love this professor but if not the class will be ok. |
If you know enough about the historial facts of the class BEFORE HAND, then take it. It's a decent class. However if you love history and really know your information about the time period, then my advice. DON'T TAKE THE CLASS, this instuctor will make you go crazy espcially when he presents his "trick" questions. And finally if you were to take this class without any knowledge of history and want to learn. Goodluck becasue his a tough teacher and at times a bit confusing hence why I say Goodluck. |
It depends on the type of student I was talking to. My opinion is based on the type of student someone is, not on how the instructor teaches. If it was a dedicated student who wanted to learn and enjoys learning, then absolutely yes. If it was the type of student who is just taking the course to get an “easy” social science credit and doesn’t particularly care to learn and make an effort, someone who is lazy with academics, then probably not. |

In the future, I would like all students to be able to participate in online activities during class time, such as online polling, web fact checking, and group wiki-type document creation and/or note taking exercises.

In Moodle, I used a "folder view" style of class which treated each week as its own collapsible and expandable folder. Within each week, a organized your tasks in to reading/viewing and assignments to "turn in" categories. That text was auto-linked to the activity modules that appeared at the bottom of each week. In this course, you were provided with links that took you "OUT" of Moodle to class materials located in Google Docs. A number of these external links also took you to videos, and in some cases these videos were part of the LCC Library collection and required a separate login. Finally, I provided students with a course deadline calendar that was both subscribable and available as a pop-up webpage (with specific dates and times), to go along with the more generic weekly "calendars" that only included "due Wednesday" or "due Sunday".
In short, I'd like to know how well, or not, this auto-linking, course organization, Google Doc use, and calendaring worked for you. Have you taken another course where the instructor has done something different that you preferred? Do you have any comments, complaints, or recommendations for what could have been done better, made clearer, or benefited you more during the term?

Super easy to keep up with work when the teacher is this orginized |
It was easy in my opinion. |
I loved the whole organization of it. It was not confusing at all and easy to get through. |
It was all a little confusing at first for me but it is my first term using moodle so once I was able to get hte hang of it it worked out great for me. |
I strongly liked the folder style of moodle page. It was very organized and made it clear what was expected of me from week to week. Aside from the moodle API, which I don't think you can do anything about, the system as a whole would get high marks in my book. |
Oh man as someone who tends to get disorganized, and have a hard time keeping track of things, I was so thankful for system you set up. Every week, and every day before class I would log in and it was so cut and dry what was required of me, or what was coming up. I hope all my teachers make things that easy to follow. |
I have never taken a hybrid course before but I have taken full online courses and always had a really hard time with them. I would say out of any of them I have taken, you have done the best job at organizing assignments and providing updates. I cannot think of any suggestions you could have done to make it better, honestly. |
I think the way everything was done online worked out well and you even sent out emails making sure we knew things were posted and it was very clear on moodle that things were due that week. |
I havent taken another class with the calander but i absolutely loved it! I highly encouge to continue this |
this was fine for me, no other class like this, its fine. PLEASE explain forums better and the format you would like them to be (ie. argumenitve, persuasive, short sentece free written) |
I think all of the linking, organization, and doc usage was done fine. |
I liked the files organization. It was easy to navigate the Moodle site. |
I think that it was useful. I found my self looking to see what we needed to do every week and it kept me from missing deadlines. |
It worked pretty well. |
I reccomend having a course calender that you require people to subscribe to and show they have actually been paying attention to the course calender by providing quiz questions based on it. |
I thought this worked well. I've had other professors that have done things similar and they've worked well also. The auto-linking is especially helpful as it deletes any problems with students finding a link. |
This worked incredibly well, other instructors I have had so far have had very clumsy and crude moodles that were hard to navigate. |
I enjoyed the calendar. Really helped remind me of things I needed reminder of |
worked well class website was accessible. |
I thought this method of organizing information was perfect. I always knew where to look for assignments and I was already familiar with google docs and such. |
It was helpful. |
All of it worked for me, no issues. Seemed like a pretty good way to organize it. |
I have no complaints here. All I viewed them as were more stuff that I needed to read on for class. |
When using the external links that I had to sign in again for, one of them required me to sign up for their website, so I did not --I don't like pushy forums that require my information to read what is assigned to me. |
It worked well |
It was good! I have no complaints. |
it was fine for me |
It was easy to follow directions, and go to the links. |
I don't really know exactly how well or not >''< but for me I always complete before due date! |
Just one - I did not know how to link the google calendar to my . . . life. I just looked at it. Maybe I just missed the instructions, but I think it would be good to have had. |
I liked the google doc linking, but I had an issue with syncing to the calendar. The assignments were put in my calendar but there was no way for me to change the alerts for them all without doing each one individually. So it only reminded me 10 mins before something was due, which doesn’t help. I also found some of the dates were wrong for when forum posts were due or quizzes. After a couple of weeks I just disregarded the alerts and tried my best to stay on the schedule myself. But I like the concept of having a synced calendar! |
Simple, it was very beneficial. You did a great job. |
This was extremely helpful for me. the course organization let me organize the work that I had to complete that week. It should stay the way it is without any changes. |
I enjoyed this format, it made everything every easy to access and was very organized. |
Enough was said. |
I actually really liked that most of the videos and other documents were in google docs. I clicked on the link and it took me to what I needed. I have another class where I click the link and then I have to search for the proper video to watch. I didn’t subscribe to the calendar. I looked at it a few times, but I hardly used it because of the reminder messages sent by the instructor and it was helpful that most all of the deadlines were the same every week. |

This term, I assigned an optional, group-editable Google Doc for students to use to work together to define the terms on the study list.
Is there any other type of web-based tool or service that you know of or have used in another class (or use yourself) that:
#2 might be helpful for learning or studying historical information covered in this class?
| Respondent | Response |

Google is the only one that would be easy in this case. |
this is the first one ive every used and it was very helpful |
I think the google docs used for this was very helpful. |
I was happy with what you had im not super tech savvy, and I found it super easy to use |
I do not, but I enjoyed the use of Google docs. |
practice study quizzes |
I loved the google docs. It helped me a lot! Definetly keep this for future classes |
a kahoot would be nice for an in class basis to see how people got the topic and see what needs to be addressed better in ln class. |
I don't know of any other websites that could be used. |
I liked the Google Doc setup that we could all contribute too. It made studying easier. |
None that I can think of or that I have used. |
Use Quizlet more! It will help a lot! 😁 |
I think that Google Docs is the best website for what you are trying to accomplish. |
I have had Quizlet quizzes made by other students in high school that were very helpful. Though I personally see it as something that you should take the initiative to make yourself if you need it. |
Future students would find quizlet useful. It is a great tool for memorizing information, key words, and concepts. |
The google docs helped me study and do well on the test. |
naw i liked what we used in this course |
Online flash cards could be helpful. |
No but thank you for that. It was very useful and I liked working that way. |
I can't think of anything more. It was beyond exceptional tools. |
I think that you should or have students create a Quizlet account with information from lectures and the textbook as a study tool. |
I don't know of any other service but I loved the group-editable google doc. |
It is neither just don't do it. |
I’m not very up to date on the new and cool technological and software trends, but I do like google docs and did really enjoy being able to participate in that group editable study tool anonymously. |

What question or questions did I forget to ask you in this survey?
and/or
What recommendations would you suggest in order to improve this hybrid course?
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
I would have more time to have more videos since they were interesting to see. |
I think you got them all! |
I wouldnt really have any other questions or recommendations for making this class better. |
Nothing... Thank you very much sir you've made my first term back in college a fun and really interesting experience. |
I cannot think of any recommendations. I generally struggle with online courses but you made this one much easier than any I have taken before. Thank you. |
great class would 100% recommend to other students who enjoy history |
I liked the class even though it was extremly challenging for me. I loved the quizes because i could re take them, but personally i had a hard.time with the midterm and forums. I think its a geeat class and you did an awesome job. I really appreciate the class and you as a teacher! Next term maybe offer a way to make up points for people who missed them for whatever reason. Thanks for the class! |
GO OVER FORUMS JOE |
I enjoyed the course. I think the forum posts were intense but useful. I don't enjoy taking the tests on a computer but there is only two in the term which makes it a little bit better. |
I think that the hybrid course was good and that this one was set up for the student to be successful in. |
You didn't forget anything in my opinion, and I don't have any other recommendations. |
Provide students with extra credit opportunities. |
I would maybe like to see more polls online but I don't quit have examples for where they would have fit in the course. I feel like presenting the data to class would help bring us together and connect history to modern day. It was great overall, however. |
More videos in class couldn't hurt though there is a fine amount currently. |
One recommendation is that the forums be organized differently. For example, making it more clear when to upload a forum. |
All questions that I had were asked. I would recommend less weight on the forum posts, however still require them. |
I don't have anything to add here... |
Comb through the questions -some were just stuff I had to Google search because the book just didn't answer it. |
Dropping lowest score |
None! I feel like the questions encompassed the class well! |
I think you are doing fine with the hybrid course |
some people who had you in past classes said you werent as engaged with students. i saw no such thing in this coarse. |
The forums could be improved by giving out more half points. |
You did a great job! |
Keep it as is. Don't overwhelm us with resources. Give us credit for more than tests. |
Answer to the “which format/grading breakdown would you chose?” question: I would put no weight on attendance, 15% forums/online polls participation, 25% quizzes, 30% midterm, 30% final |
This survey was very thorough and I appreciate the chance to give feedback. Look forward to the next two terms with you. Thank you once again. |
I think that you should made the forums worth less for the overall grade because, for me, it was a bit stressful having that one assignment be worth a good chunk of our grade. |
I enjoyed this course even though I was not that interested in history. The lectures are engaging and you are and incredible teacher. The organization of the class is great although I feel like there should be less emphasis on the forums. |
AGAIN enough said. |
I think the idea of being able to participate in forums, fact checking, etc. in class on personal devices would be really awesome. It would allow more in class participation and input from students and provide more of a classroom discussion that could maybe take away some of the forum requirement? I feel like I would have enjoyed class discussions more than forums, because even though I try to read all of them, I can’t keep up with all of them. And really as long as you post or respond to a forum throughout the week, you're not required to read them all (even though you should) whereas in class, it’s hard not to hear the people who are speaking out (unless someone fell asleep.) |
