Responses: 30Hybrid Course Questionnaire
for HST201
The only module in Moodle which allows for completely anonymous student participation (even though you are logged into Moodle with your L# and PIN) is this Questionnaire Activity, specifically set to anonymous mode, which I have done. Moodle will record a submission "score" of "1" when you submit this survey. That is all I will know... who completed it and who did not. I will NOT know what your answers were, so I ask that you be candid and honest with your responses.
This has been a "hybrid" U.S. History course at Lane. (3 credits in class, 1 credit online, 4 credits total.) As such, I have some specific questions to ask students... questions that are not on the generic teacher evaluations you are often asked to complete at the end of each term.
I appreciate your giving me honest feedback about this class. In return, students who complete BOTH this survey AND the Student Evaluation of Instruction survey will earn a 1 percentage point boost to their final class grade.
THIS SURVEY IS DUE BY 5PM ON THURSDAY OF FINALS WEEK
Every question will require some type of answer in order to submit the survey.

These surveys are anonymous. Several students in past terms have suggested that I include an optional "name" field in the survey for students who DID want me to know who had written the responses. So, leave this field empty to remain anonymous, or enter your name if you'd prefer.

Can you elaborate on your answer above?
I can tell you that only a very few students avail themselves of office hours during the term. And I know that cannot be because the "times don't work for your schedule". I made it clear that I would be willing to meet with students on any day of the week, at any time I was not already in the classroom.
So, if you never had an interaction with me outside of class, was it because my presentation was so crystal clear that you didn't need the help, and are already earning a high grade in the class. Was it because you were shy? Did I seem unapproachable? Did you just not make the effort? Did we take care of all of your questions or concerns over Moodle messaging?
If you did speak with me outside of class, was it worthwhile or helpful? What information could you choose to share with me?
I plan to share some of your anonymous answers with students next term. I do pride myself on being available to students. The times I spent with my own college professors during office hours were generally very rewarding and insightful, so I'd like to be the same type of resource for you. I'm hoping your input will help me to do just that.

No interaction |
I did not because I am incredibly anxious about interaction and I was not able to overcome that to make a time to meet with you. It would have benefited me to speak with you, but my own failings and your overwhelming presence and sometimes bias about religion and people's potential if they are among the students that attend community college. I'm sure you're a great person outside of the classroom, and I wish I could have gotten to know you in that capacity. |
We never had an interaction outside of class because I felt everything you covered in class was very thorough and I'm someone who usually only asks for help if I absolutely need it. |
I confronted the teacher about next terms class and the book we needed. Eventually started talking about how i liked his teaching methods and how he runs his moodle. Which is great. |
I always seem to get everything I need over messaging. That being said I have every confidence that your students are a priority and in three terms have never felt anything resembling neglect regarding your teaching habits. |
I work a lot out side of school 40+ hours so I never had the free time to meet with you |
I never felt like I had anything to say, and I had no questions. I never felt prompted to say anything. |
I did not find you unapproachable. You were very clear with your instructions in class and online. If the material was unclear at any point it was because I did not read the chapter or did not take notes in class. The one time I did message you on moodle was regarding an incorrect question on one of the quiz's and you quickly resolved it. If I did think I needed help outside of class I would have no problem stopping by your office. Thank you for a wonderful term! |
I did not go to any office hours. I did not have any questions or concerns and to be honest was a little bit shy. I felt you did a good job explaining during class and coming to all the classes was highly beneficial. Also you did a good job on being available for students with questions. |
I find you helpful both in class and outside. I took advantage of your office hours and found them beneficial. |
I wish that I could have spoken with you outside of class. I was too nervous/afraid to ask for help. I wish I could have made the effort. |
I did really good job in class, for that reason i didn't need help. |
I didn't really have much interaction with you outside of class because I didn't really feel like it was necessary. Your presentation is clear and I tend to be good at listening and concentrating while in class. |
I didn't not attend many office hours, mainly because I understood what was being taught during the lectures and any questions I did have usually were answered by the end of class through you or another student. You were very approachable and that's why I did attend a couple office hour sessions. |
I did have a few interactions with you after class and in the hall walking to class actually. I could tell how genuine of a person you were and your willingness to actually pay attention and help with any questions or general comments I had. My most memorable moment was after class and you overheard me talking how I used a bunch of information from your lectures and from the textbook to write an essay for my class at Oregon State University. You expressed how cool that was and how much it meant to you which really made me appreciate all you do in the class. |
Personally I could have done 100% better than I did in this course. I met with the professor once after class, but I have work right after that class. And like I said before after taking this class I strongly believe that hybrid course are not for me. |
I was able to talk to my instructor through moodle message. It would probably have been beneficial to talk to my instructor in person but I am quite shy and always am nervous to come talk to my teacher about questions that I may have on the material. |
Please do take advantage of Professor Escobar's availability to talk one-on-one: he wants for his students to have an understanding of the explored history, and for it to be lasting in our memory. There are many different learning styles out there, read-write, kinesthetic, auditory, and visual, I suppose there could be more. Learning ='s review, review, review, and potentially in the more formats you can the better. So if creating a visual timeline from Escobar's PowerPoint images and taking pictures of the power points on your silenced cell or camera helps you, or conversing with the teacher or other students & recording the class lectures, or classifying your chapter notes into typed format in classification of chapter to sub chapter (and a table of contents for quick page finding), I would suggest that you try it. There is nothing to loose. I did, and I am amazed at how this helped me with my test anxiety, and concern with remembering the correct answers for the mid term. With the forums, please do not be afraid to say what you think, or to be "wrong". A friend of mine that went to Architecture School at the UO told me of a teacher that said, "If you think that you know the answer, say it loud, and if anyone thinks you are wrong they will correct you". It is easier to find truth with others than searching without interaction, and it is ok to be wrong. We are in school, this implies that we are ignorant about some things that we want to learn more about! If you take the time to engage in class (listen, contemplate, engage, and respond silently and vocally at appropriate times), there will be plenty to learn from Escobar, inside and out of class. Class is an engaging experience, that is part of what helps us remember the materials, we are humans, thank goodness, not robots. Take the class seriously, attend class for Escobar's good lectures, and keep a diligent calendar! Hope you have a great term! |
Having a high grade and a class and getting information from lecture and reading, I believe to think most of my questions were answered either in class or looking it up on my own. As a full-time University of Oregon student, I spend most of my time at the UO campus versus at Lane. I also work up to 30 hours a week, so my schedule isn't as flexible to make it to Lane (other than for this class). |
I honestly wanted to skim through these to just get my 1% but I feel like it is my duty as a student to respond to you here with as much effort as you presented as a teacher. Thank you take your job seriously and your duty as a teacher even more seriously. You were clear and direct with your words, and as a student who had poor attendance near the end, I still wanted to make clear that I appreciated the fact that you began class on time every day. You made it an option for me to have a good first term in U.S. History whether I took it or not. So thank you. |
I never met with you outside out of class because honestly your presentations were quite crystal clear and I was doing well in the course and never really had the need to meet with you. With that being said I know if I had a problem I would have felt comfortable to do so as you seem very approachable and willing to help. |
The review session really made me appreciate what you do |
I didn't feel the need to meet with the instructor outside of class because he made very clear details regarding assignments, quizzes, exams, and note taking. He was very informative, and if there was a topic of importance he addressed it multiple times both in class and via email. An excellent communicator, Mr. Escobar made this course very clear to comprehend. |
The main thing I have to say is that I didn't see a need to go to my instructor before or after the class. Using the notes you take in class and the tests on Moodle were all I really needed to do well in the class. |
You were available to discuss the material and related conversations after class (that's when I chose to ask questions), and I benefited from your availability immensely. Often it was just to quickly clarify facts or concepts, but sometimes it was to look at related issues within other spans of history, and I appreciate your wealth of knowledge and willingness to share beyond what you're contracted to. It has given me a firm understanding of this time for America, and an interest in History on the whole. Thank you. |
I didn't need to contact the professor outside of class because i understood the information pretty well and whatever questions I did have, I could usually answer them by using the book or a simple google search. |
The instructor was very available to students, and I had no issue with that. I was doing pretty well in the class so I felt that I did not need to seek instructor outside of class. |
No complaints. You sent everyone multiple emails with reminders so there was no reason for anyone to fall behind. Granted I did still foeget one quiz but that was completely my fault. Best instructor for a hybrid class and I do not enjoy hybrid classes. |
The information needed to succeed in this class was so clear that once I understood how the term worked I felt that I didn't need any help. I think it was extremely clear that you would be available to meet any time. |
I felt that I understood the material well and didn't need to utilize the office hour times. I felt everything was made clear in class, from lecture, to figuring out grades or what you had expected from us. |

Relatively easy to access the materials. Forums didnt alwats feel like the best use of my time. |
Very Easy..... everything on moodle was very organized and easy to access. I never had any problems accessing materials. |
Not very easy, they seem to hate my computer. |
Very Easy! There were always spare copies, including copies online. |
I only missed two classes so it was incredibly easy to get the materials I needed to succeed. |
Easy if one knows how to navigate moodle, and if they sign up for a hybrid course they'd better be fully prepared to do so- thank you for also emailing me a video shown in class. |
I could access most of the information easily. Sometimes the videos would have a little bit of a lag to them though, but it didn't hinder me from getting any of the information that I needed. |

In my opinion, certain online assignments were given to provide both a learning experience and a grading "gift" to students. To my dismay, a number of students failed to complete the computer quizzes and opinion polls. Instead of being an easy way to earn 20% of the grade in this class, this "gift" assignment actually hurt some students. Answering for yourself only, can you provide me any thoughts you may have on the matter?
| Response |
|---|
If you're paying attention and keeping track of your assignments and the term calendar, there isn't much of an excuse for not completing these assignments. |
They were very nice to have. I believe I only missed one, and appreciated greatly the ones I completed. |
I can't speak for other students but I am someone who works 25-30 hours a week and is taking 12 credits so sometimes I forgot I have an assignment due and it just kind of flys over my head. |
It amazes me that students actually passed up the opportunity for free points. |
It fascinates me every time I hear you say things like this. I guess it just goes to show that there is a certain percentage of people that are simply never going to put in the work regardless of how difficult or easy it may be. Honestly, even if you didn't read the book you should be able to get full credit for the quizzes by sheer probability if you apply even a minute amount of time to it. |
I did not like the forums |
I think that the quizzes were manageable just fine, considering you can take them as many times as you want. |
I loved the assignments. They were simple and there was plenty of time to complete them. I didn't miss a single one. If someone did it was because they forgot or didn't care, in my opinion. |
I personally loved that grading "gift". It amazes me that some students wouldn't take full advantage of that opportunity. |
I think consistency is difficult for some people. |
I wish I could have not skipped on these easy gift points. |
I did my online homework, however i earn an F on the first two. I believed i earned an F because he was bias. |
I think it's great. The quizzes were a great review tool as well as easy points, and the opinion polls were even easier points. I think you did a pretty good job of mentioning them often enough to help me remember. |
The gimme points were a nice change from the usual quiz's and homework assignments. |
The quizzes I found to be helpful as a "gift" and for learning the material much more thoroughly. The first forum was hard because I wasn't quite sure exactly what was going to be expected as far as grading and I also think some of the answers on the forum were graded a little hard. |
It wasn't really a "gift" even if the student put in consistent effort into the post and still received low grade on it. |
I think that this was a very easy think to keep up with. |
The hard part was keeping up on the reading for me, so it lead to stress for the quizzes. The polls and Quizzes were great, it was just intimidation at first because it was overwhelming with the timing of reading and quizzing, Mondays were pretty miserable. My personal stress with tests stressed me out at times with the quizzes, and I felt that at times the forums were difficult to keep up with considering my general course load of classes. It took me some time to become used to the fact that the quizzes were practice places more than tests. I have had a hard time in the past with tests, major test anxiety. I would not have minded if there were no forums to put energy into considering my course load of 13 credits for me it was difficult! Yet it seemed that I really don't like forum culture, because you are not supposed to say to much, and I sense that this could lead to misunderstanding and shallow conversation. I did work on limiting the girth of what I was saying. If there had been a sentence limit, perhaps, a general guideline, I could have felt comfortable having that (aside from the Quotes). |
It comes down to how important grades are to students. You can tell which was are going to do better due to the fact that they are taking advantage of these opportunities. |
They became a far more daunting assignment rather than a gift. I felt after a response or two, replies to others were challenging to make without sounded like regurgitated information just to get a few points when everyone had very similar responses. |
I think the quizzes and opinion polls are 100% a gift and students are silly not to capitalize on these points. I felt these were very easy to get full points on without much time or energy spent. |
It was helpful to pass but I feel it's a crutch to not learn all info |
There are two reasons. One: forgetfulness. We all experience that "oh crap moment" when we forget to do something. Students usually forget "easy point" assignments because they aren't as seemingly pressing, compared to quizzes or forums. The second: laziness. That is a personal choice, which in short is pretty self-explanatory. |
That should've been the easiest 20% to get. |
I personally always took the time to do the quizzes, I can't understand why someone wouldn't at least make an attempt. Even if you don't have a working computer, we now have a beautiful new library with lots of good computers. There's really no excuse to not at least try. |
I felt that it was very easy to get the points for quizzes. |
I loved the quizzes online. I have bad test anxiety and I felt much better doing the quizzes at home on my computer. I would also agree that the quizzes were a grading gift. |
I don't think anything needs to change |
I don't see why one wouldn't do these assignments. They were "gifts". |
I think that's just a sign over laziness if they couldn't complete the quizzes that were pretty much a handed A. For the forums, I think they were a little extra work and if you didn't read or understand the material during the time of the forum you were doomed from the start. |

I enjoyed reading the discussions in the Forums. They were supposed to be a way for all students (even shy ones who never like to speak up in class) to participate online. But as you may have seen or read for yourself, a number of students did not participate, briefly posted a single time, or failed to put forth a thoughtful effort which included data from the weekly reading/watching/listening materials. The way I see it, if you simply get involved, this should be another easy A+ grade, just like the weekly quizzes.
In the past, I tried this with little or no grade points assigned to it. As you can imagine, few participated. So currently, I have put a very substantial 20% of your grade at stake in this forum assignment. Participation was better than before the 20%, but too many students still fail to participate. I am certainly inclined to keep this assignment for the benefit of the students who participated. There were some really deep and thoughtful discussions, perhaps better than we could have had in class. And I know more students "spoke up" online than do in class.
Help me to understand and/or provide me with any relevant feedback on this matter? If you were one of the students who failed this activity, please let me know what the issues were? If you were one of those who passed or "aced" this activity, what feedback do you have for me?
Interesting or relevant materials?
Too many/too few materials?
Deadlines for making your first post?
Scoring posts? 1 to 3 scale?
Topics change each week?
Group size? Random groups?
Worth your time and effort?

I definitely think that the forums were worth the time and effort. I did find it hard to determine who each student was replying to. |
I have zero tolerance for debate/heated discussion, or even the passionate sharing of opinions online, so the forum was a nightmare. The thought of putting those paragraphs online for all to critique, when I was not confident about the subject matter, and knowing that so much of my grade depended on getting it right, caused me to fail the assignment. |
I thought some of the topics for the forum were a little dry and not interesting enough. |
I think that a discussion is great. I forgot to follow up on y forum a few times and it was closed by the time I remembered. |
Again, I really don't understand what the issue is with doing what I found to be a simple, yet effective, activity. |
I did not understand the forum outline at all and I know i could of come in and asked for help. |
The forums were really difficult. The prompts, the material, and the requirements. I would have like to see a good example of a post worth 3, 2, and 1 points, so that I would have better idea of what I should be working towards. |
The only forum I did not fully participate in was the cartoon forum. It was simply because I felt like nobody was using citation or back up evidence or relevant history and it was frustrating because they were just like "I agree with you, Thomas Jefferson was a strict constructionist" or "Obama seems like a socialist" It was just not good, in my opinion. The deadlines for the post are good. The scoring system is very fair. Some of the reading materials were very dry and hard to read. The subjects were very involved in a few of the forums. Especially the Radical vs conservative one. I think perhaps there maybe some other subjects that would be easier to discuss. It just felt like often people just posted something just to post with no thought or spell check, even though you stressed that. Also nobody used paragraphs just like one giant lump of 300 words. The group size seems to work fine, if people post. The random groups were fine except sometimes I was lumped with the same people 3 times in a row. |
I thought that material was interesting. I felt that deadline for your first post was reasonable. The scoring was good and so were the group sizes. |
People just need to get started. Write something down, don't just think about it. Once you have 3 or 4 sentences down you've got the basis of a student forum post. |
I wish we could do the forums in a more interactive way, like with students face-to-face in class. |
Definitely too much material to remember. |
I think the deadline for making the first post was very helpful for getting the discussion going. I've seen online class forums that don't have a first post deadline, and about 90% of the posts were made on the day before the forum closed. It might be interesting to have the same topic for several forums. |
The online forums were a good way to see other people opinions on the material we were learning about, but I can see how people wouldn't participate because it's not something that is common in class. I found it difficult to know when you got your post graded and therefore didn't know how many points i needed to get the full points. |
I thought this part of class was a good idea and did help bring some discussions to the material. I found it interesting to see what other people thought on the matter. However I did not like the grading on each post. I think that if it was obvious that the student was trying or putting effort in that he/she should get the full credit that week. There were times where I would reply 3 times on three different topics and explaining my reasoning on each and only got 5 points for the week. Other than that I liked it. |
I strongly did not feel comfortable with other students see what I had to say about post. There were time where I did not feel I had strong enough post to summit, there was many of time where I didn't summit any post. |
Honesty these forums stressed me out... I would sit down and read the material for the forum and would have no idea what to post. I think part of it was because I wanted to think of something very intelligent to say in these forums but nothing sounded good enough. I just didn't know what to say. |
Change the due date! Tuesday, Wednesday? Lower the point req, to 5 or 4, and to aim for 7 or 8? Please less reading than the Forum three, Yes No Conservative or not, ouch! 3 forums not 4, it can be hard to find time to go to the grocery store, or cook, or clean much already, and if there was one less forum at the end of the term, one could have that bit less on the plate. Smaller groups. More people writing more often means more reading (perhaps any more than 5 or 6 people is asking for overwhelm, or does not incline students to post a second or third time (labor too hard reading all of the posts). Also introverts prefer small groups, 2-5 tops for some, and perhaps these social-self rules or practices can be the default in digital interactions too. The difference between this and the forums introverts attend online is that they choose the venue, they can leave any time, the other individuals on the forum can be interested in similar things, even if they do not agree on things and argue about them, there can be even a portion of cultural similarity between them because they chose this distinct topic to explore aside from any other. While individuals may have a hard time feeling comfortable saying something, one option could be to take out the importance of opinion as opposed to titling it a historical hypothesis. Also, if there was one less Forum, I would have liked to continue working on what I had gotten wrong on my Mid term, and to practice more of the first half/ second half, practice that I can lend more of this to long term memory, and in more detail considering that every break I have in between terms is designated now for reading ahead for the next term. For education majors, it could be helpful. |
I like how the groups were random and we were given the opportunity to post as much as we like. I felt that some did bring interesting points, but many points were repeated and a lot of replies, were basically just saying why we agreed or disagreed. Some of the material I felt was a little dense and some of it did throw me off guard due to grammar and style of writing. I feel maybe more groups with fewer people would be helpful, to solve the problem of overstating ideas or points. |
I hate to admit it because being on the failing side of this assignment, my words sound far less credible. I do see that it was not too challenging to do them, as many smarter people did. But I struggled to not feel overwhelmed with the lack of particular outline of each forum post. Also I felt a bit overwhelmed with the amount of background information required for a substantial response sometimes. |
I like the idea of the online forums as I fall into the shy category that doesn't love mandatory in class discussions. I always participated and did well but also wasn't able to ace out this category which does bother me. I feel the that the scoring of the post wasn't completely fair. I felt that a lot of students didn't participate and I did and but effort in and still didnt get full points which was a bummer. I think that deducting points for not posting continuously throughout the week isnt the best method to grade these posts. I know it says it in the instructions to do so but I would post by the deadline on monday and post early on and throughout Saturday and make good insightful comments and not get full credit. I understand you dont want people waiting to the last minute but if good solid discussion is still happening on the last day I dont think points should be deducted. During the week, schedules are incredible busy and sometimes posting multiple times on Saturday is really the only realistic option. |
Blah |
I don't have any negative feedback regarding forums. I loved them! I hate talking speaking to people I am unfamiliar with in person (for example my classmates). The forums were a great way for me to interact with others to better grasp the material without worry of my "shyness" getting in the way. |
The only thing I would add is that it was difficult to tell what the grade for my forum was since it wasn't updated too often as I would've liked. Other than that, everything was good. The materials were relevant to the things in class, the deadlines were more than fair, and the topics all led up to one another just like a story. |
I truly enjoyed the first three forums and regret that I wasn't involved in the fourth. Many things got in the way including technology malfunction (here I am spouting about the new library-unfortunately it isn't an option on weekends) and cramming for difficult finals, though I still believe the deadlines are fairly reasonable...I just failed to make it work in this tenth week rush. Ouch %5, I miss you already. I like the forums, I think they add another dimension to the class, they allow people to mull over history outside of class, it's accessible and simple, it's well-worth keeping. |
I feel like sometimes it is hard to keep an interesting debate/conversation going in some of the forums. There is times where there will be posts popping up every ten minutes and it is hard to keep track of all the posts that are coming in at the time. Maybe smaller group sizes could help with that? |
I felt that this was the more challenging part of the course for sure. It made me work for the score of 2 or 3. While I was not a big fan of the forums, I did see their importance to the class. I felt that there was plenty of material to work with and even if not their are plenty of students to reply to on forums for points. |
Everything's fine in my opinion. Class is obviously planned out. |
The material in the forums was definitely relevant. The deadlines for the first post are effective at providing early discussions so everyone is able to participate throughout the week. |
I feel the forum posts were relevant and had a good impact if you knew what you were talking about. I think sometimes it confused me though because of people all having their own opinions or some going off on tangents so I wasn't sure what was relevant to know or not to know for the test. |

How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook itself AND the extent to which the instructor incorporated the textbook into the course? (too much, too little, just right, felt good about having to buy it, etc.?)
| Response |
|---|
just right. I was pleased that he suggested the e-book/chapter option. It saved me a ton of money, as I wasn't continuing in the sequence. |
It was an incredibly useful resource and the only way to make up for missed classes, therefore it is a necessity. |
I thought the book was a lot like most college textbooks, just giving you a lot of extra information you won't need. Although I liked how professor Escobar referred to the text and let us know what was the important things to know. |
Satisfied. I liked the textbook authors. |
Everything was great. I particularly like how you hold the textbook authors accountable. |
too much |
I hated the first chapters of the textbooks. As history went on and the chapters covered fewer year, the reading became more pleasant and understandable. On the days that we were required to finish the quiz on Wednesday rather than Monday, I felt I understood the material more, after having one class period about the chapter. I think the instructor did a great job at providing information about our text book, and its authors as well as the biases that are present in their writings. Let's just say I'm glad that I only rented the textbook. |
The textbook could be a little more incorporated in class I think. It was a little hard to read. Its just a lot of material to absorb in a short amount of time. Perhaps reading guides for students to take home, or some tips on how to take notes on the chapters that you think would be most helpful? Although I was glad that I bought it the class would be impossible without it! |
The textbook was very useful for the online quiz. During class the instructor highlighted key events from the chapters which made it helpful to know what was going to be on the exams. |
Great textbook |
Too little |
Good |
I think the textbook and the lectures complimented each other well. The textbook could get a bit bogged down in details, but the lectures helped sort out the important information. |
The textbook was interesting and had a lot of good information from various sources, the textbook was important in knowing what was going on in class but at the same time it wasn't completely necessary. |
I thought the textbook was used just the right amount. I really like that the same textbook is used for 202 and 203 making it extremely valuable. |
felt okay having to buy it, good textbook |
I felt that the instructor did a very good job incorporating the textbook in class lectures. |
The book was sufficient (although painful in certain ways) so far. Great intros and conclusions for every chapter! (These seem to be the clearer portions). I understand that this is the best find for a text for this class, and I am grateful. However, I would love to share my thoughts with the publisher. Note to the Publisher for Liberty Equality Power 7th Ed. I have the sense that the authors have been wrestling and arguing over the content for so long that clarity is being lost. I will read about a battle, and only be left with some philosophical mumbo jumbo. I appreciated on the other hand relative reasons of winning loosing relativity, and descriptions of how so. Seeing what is going on is vital, and little bits of minutia argument by historians, where I am trying to get a large picture of what is going on. Please be willing to define any words that GED graduates do not understand (having three divided volumes will help with this). Please use layman language as much as possible! I will be an Elementary Teacher and need to understand this book, not a History Professor in College. I may be starting here, but I can always learn more detail from the teachers, and personal study. Readability is strange, authors try to push too much meaning into one sentence, and a bit convoluted when they could be much more straight forward and direct, they worry too much about being politically correct, to where you can't get the jest of what they are getting at. In other words, often things are too implied, not just stated and then backed up with relative comparison. I would love to see the publisher divide this text into 3 portions: it's size is unmanageable in the study space, heavy, and not transportable, and with the laptop and writing utensils the book is cumbersome (consider 8 1/2" by 11" for best note taking ability, this way one can balance their notepad on the text) . Section out the text into three volumes and require that all are purchased together. Make the digital copy free ! |
I liked we were able to buy chapters instead of the whole book and I felt that both tied in hand and hand. I saw both on the midterm, so it's vital to go to class and read to maintain a decent understanding and grade. |
I felt it was an okay textbook. I like summaries at the end of the chapters very much, a useful extra. |
I really only used the book for the quizes and studying for the exams but I didnt do a ton of in-depth reading so I found the online buying per chapter option worked very well. |
It's thick |
The text book was alright. I much preferred the in class lectures and power points. They were clearer, engaging, and easy to understand. |
The textbook was difficult to understand at times, however the instructor brought it into perspective and made it relevant at the right time. |
I like the textbook, and I appreciate the extent to which it was incorporated. I will probably keep the book just for casual reading. |
I was happy with the textbook and I was glad that we actually use the textbook once we purchased it. I used the online version of the book and it worked out well for me! |
I was satisfied with the textbook and the instructor did a great job incorporating it into the course. |
Didn't enjoy the textbook much |
The textbook was very easy to read and the material was organized effectively. The class notes incorporated the textbook very well. |
I felt the book was very important and I felt good about buying it. |

If asked by another student whether or not they should take this course with this specific instructor, what would you say? (Remember, this survey is anonymous, so I'd appreciate your candor/honesty.)
| Response |
|---|
Thorough instructor. Moderate course load, but very easy to accomplish. No reason you shouldn't get all your work turned in. Make sure you pay attention to the form instructions. |
Yes, if you come prepared with Thomas Jefferson quotes to combat a strong religious bias. It was a good class, and if you can handle the forums, go for it. |
I would tell them to only take it if they really like history, but if they do they will learn a ton of interesting information and be taught by an excellent teacher. |
I would highly encourage them to take the lads. Professor is great and knows what he is taking about. |
I'd tell them that this course is informative and well structured for someone with a busy schedule, but if you're not going to show up to class and read the book then don't bother. |
I enjoyed you as my teacher I did not enjoy the forums |
"If you want a difficult class that has a lot of forums posts then sign up for this one." |
I would say yes. You are an interesting guy. You are passionate about your subject and knowlagble of the material. Sometimes I think there should be a little bit more time for class discussion or students to speak in class. More time for questions etc. but i think that's expected in a hybrid course. I think classes from you are a lot of work which I think is completely fair. I would not recommend this class to people who did not plan on attending class or who only wanted to be on their phones in class. If they are easily offended this might not be the class for them. You are very straight forward and it does not offend me but some students may be more sensitive. Also I like your travel photos during the slides! |
I would say if they wanted to take American History, to certainly take it with this instructor. I very much so enjoyed the class as well as the instructor. |
Joe Escobar is a good instructor. He is knowledgeable and uses class time to present interesting information. If you are committed to class you can get an A or a B. If you don't have any interest and fail to meet the minimum standard, you will fail. |
You should take it if you want to put in the work. |
No |
I would tell them that if they aren't willing to put much time or effort into this course, they shouldn't take it. |
I would say the professor knows what he's talking about and his passion for history makes the class much more enjoyable, strictly because he enjoys teaching it. I would recommend the class to anyone future student. |
I would advise them to take the course because the class is very straight up and clear to the point. Mr. Escobar teaches it in a no frills kind of way without any trickery, just pay attention and do the required materials. |
Great instructor, just be prepared for a lot of work. |
I would say yes but tell them that there is a lot of work online so be prepared and also tell them about the forums. |
Professor Escobar is a great teacher! Please try not to be offended if he has different views than you, or does not conform to your standards of politically correct dialogue. I would suggest having a conversation with him on the first day of class, not during the lecture, and bring up what politically correct terminology you think is important, for example, European American, Native American, LGBTQ, American Latino, Gender Awareness, Hispanic and more. If you like how the conversation goes, stay in the class, if you do not, have another class ready to take over the credits needed for your credit # objective. The lecture are great! He does not feel the need to embarrass anyone for getting the wrong answer in class, and is very encouraging. He understands that we want to learn, and he wants to teach. |
Very acknowledgeable of material and availability outside of class if needed. Brought in some lighter videos/cartoons to combine with the dense material. |
I would recommend it. Very prompt when it came to responses to students. Extensive knowledge of U.S. History, well organized curriculum and easily traceable due dates. |
I would definitely recommend this course and instructor. I took this class purely for my own interest and personal growth and felt very happy with it. Sometimes the out of class work seemed a bit tedious, for me as I was just taking the course for fun not a requirement/pre-req. I loved the lectures and coming to class and got a ton out of the course. I really like the professor as we has so organized and came into every class ready to go and you can tell how much he likes the material. |
Yes take it if you wanna larn our history |
Yes! It's a great learning experience, and if simply DO THE WORK required on time (which isn't to difficult, so it shouldn't be a problem), you will be fine. This class is a must! |
I would say they should definitely take this course. |
Escobar clearly knows what he's doing and is passionate about what he teaches. He teaches in a very clear manner and encourages you to think through the material. You won't fall asleep in his class and if you're actually putting in the effort, you'll come away with a better understanding of and appreciation for history. I honestly can say he's my favorite instructor so far, partly because I've learned more than in any other class I've taken, and partly because Escobar invested in all of his students to ensure that such a level of learning was possible. I expect a mastery of subject knowledge from my professors..I admire when they also have a passion for that subject knowledge. Escobar more than meets my expectations for a "good" instructor. |
I would say to take it with this instructor. History is a topic that a lot of people can get bored with pretty easily but the professor did a good job of keeping it entertaining and factual. Sometimes the lecture will seem like it isn't relating to history but it all ties back together at the end of it. Overall it was a good class! |
The teacher can be a little strick at times however this fact had helped me learn a lot about a subject I had forgot about over the years. I loved the hybrid part of the course, and would recommend this format and the teacher. |
Take it, he makes the class interesting |
Absolutely. The information is presented well and you earn the grade you want. |
I think this would be a class to take with this instructor. He makes everything clear and doesn't mind having to repeat or explain a certain topic differently. He makes classwork and the online work easy to get to and do. The tests are a little hard and long, I was exhausted after the 70th question but they are all multiple choice so if you know the material you should be just fine. |

In the future, I would like all students to be able to participate in online activities during class time, such as online polling, web fact checking, and group wiki-type document creation and/or note taking exercises.
If I were to require students enrolled in this class to bring a laptop computer, smartphone, or iPad type of wireless internet device to class EVERY CLASS DAY, would you have been able to do that? (Do you own a device like this or could you get access to one for this class?)

In past terms, some students created/shared/participated in a Google Doc to define the terms on the study list.
Is there any other type of web-based tool or service that you know of or have used in another class (or use yourself) that:
#1 would be cool and/or useful for me to implement for future students in this history class?
- OR -
#2 might be helpful for learning or studying historical information covered in this class?

Google docs is the way to go. It's the best way to collaborate in a group, or by yourself. I use it daily. |

Quizlet to run through material and create flashcards. |
Google Docs works well. I prefer it over Moodle, but I also didn't really delve into it and see how easily accessible it really is. |
I really enjoy using Quizlet. I used it for all the study guides and think it is very helpful way to make online flashcards and like a google doc you can share it with others to edit and use. |

Create a Facebook group page. Students have the tendency to not check Moodle or their emails, simply because "they'd rather be on social media". This could create a learning platform in an unavoidable area of daily living: social media. Then there would be really no excuse for someone to say "they didn't recive any notifications/messages", or "didn't know a quiz was due", etc. |

What question or questions did I forget to ask you in this survey?
and/or
What recommendations would you suggest in order to improve this hybrid course?
| Response |

N/A |
Don't play that "Amazing Grace" video please. It was really awkward and gave no information that couldn't have been given in a lecture or handout using a third of the class time.Otherwise, I'm glad to have attended the class. Thank you for a productive term. |
I thought everything important was covered, loved this class and was very happy with it! |
Everything was great. I loved the class. You made history very fun. |
Unless you were teaching this as a majors course I don't think it gets much better. As a survey course it's been exactly what I need; it fills a requirement, provides interesting information on the subject, and works very well for a busy schedule. |
use the forums as extra credit in the class |
I would suggest more time for in class discussion, or more in class group work. Even though there were forums, I felt very disconnected from everyone in the class. |
I think most of my suggestions I already stated earlier! I can't think of another question for the survey right now. |
The class was good but maybe more emphasis on material covered in the mid term and final. |
Good class. |
More interactive classes |
More midterm, to much info for only two midterms. |
I'm sure this course isn't perfect, but I can't think of any improvements. |
None, very good class overall and enjoyed taking it! |
There is nothing I can think of off the top of my head. |
Can not think of any question at the moment |
I would recommend changes the format for the forums a little bit, make it look a little less intimidating. |
I realize perhaps that I do not like hybrid courses, online or lecture would be best for me, and not a combination, unless the hybrid class portion were inside the classroom, extends the class period to the reg amount (when the publishers pull their heads out of their butts and separate the text into 3 parts, and make it an 8 1/2" by 11" - I mean that in the nicest way possible.)
maybe offer a way to turn off auto emails that are created when other students post to the forum. Maybe there is another way to be informed of a post than to my main biz email ( I would rather do forums in class). For polls like these, I would like to select multiple options, say for Q # 6. Thank you for the informative and valuable class!

Nothing I could think of. |
Perhaps a slightly extended deadline for the final forum? Honestly I wouldn't change a thing. The structure is great. |
I feel like this survey hit on all of the important questions that needed to be asked about the class! |
the survey was very well thought out and no questions or aspects were missed. |
Nothing, you covered it all and then some |
None |
The study list is a little generic, I wish it could show the specifics of what we need to know for the test just because the test is so extensive that it would be easy to cover the wrong material on a certain concept and maybe narrowing what we need to know down would help breeze through the test a little faster. |
