I think I didn't use your office hours because I never had any questions but there were times I would have liked to ask you about history we weren't covering in class and I think I decided against it because I am shy. Your persona is a little stern and abrupt and I felt as though talking to you about a grade would be scary (you have a "you should have worked harder for that grade" attitude. which, hey, more power to you. It was just hard to approach). But I don't believe you have the stern persona when you talk about history and when people just have questions about the events in history and not the grade. I think thats because you love it and I think students see that and it makes them more excited to learn.

Answered any question I had as soon as class was over. Sometimes the discussions were only somewhat class related, however I do feel those discussions that were class related broadened my knowledge of the course work.

I believe you were incredibly articulate and covered information clearly and effectively. I felt I was doing great until the last two or three weeks of the class which I wish I would have made a stronger effort to come in. 

I went to office hour a lot because the time fit my schedule this term. And I think that helps me a lot!

You answered my questions during class, and if I had a question that I needed answered I just messaged you through moodle.

I only came to see you in your office hours once, but I came to explain why I had been absent a number of times and to get your input on the posts I'd made to forum 3 so far. You were very reasonable in giving me an accurate prediction of my grade in the class and you explained what you liked and disliked about my posts. This was helpful because it helped my determine what I should keep doing and what I should change to get a bettter grade. 

I never had interaction because #1 i'm really shy and #2 i found myself not really needing help. Everything was self explanatory or the instructions were easy to follow. 

I didn't have any burning auestions or concerns that I couldn't look up online.

I had some conversations with my instructor regarding my grade which was very helpful, and a I was able with other students to form a study group for the midterm which really helped by grade and study abilities.

Everything presented in class was fairly clear i had no concerns. I never visited with you because i didnt make the effort. Did really even need to make a effort because they were not any questions.

People don't go to office hours because we don't give a damn about education. Universities beat the living out of my thirst to learn. I enjoyed writing and editing stories until I took a writing class, now I never write. I was never into history but I'm sure if I was this would dissuade me from leaning in my own time. The people want a change. not to jump through thousand dollar hoops.

I spoke with you once outside of class during office hours to go over my first exam. I thought it was helpful because it gave me a few areas to focus on for the next exam. I should have taken advantage of office hours when I had difficulty with Forum 3

I did not speak with you outside of class. You told me what I needed to do and went to the book or internet if I was confused.

Asked for a better explanation of the forms. Received thorough explanation, and walked away with a better understanding.

I never talked to the instructor outside of class because I never needed to. If I did need to I would have stayed after class or gone to his office.

I did not do very well in this class but it's my fault for not being as proactive as I should have been. I didn't go in during the office hours because I couldn't pick only a couple things to be explained. I didn't understand a good portion of the material and it's probably because I'm not at all interested in US history.

I found our conversations to be plenty worthwhile and helpful, though they were not always strictly relevant to the class. It is nice to be able to have developed conversations with studied people because it allows me to expand my views and opinions or my understanding of a time in history or the relevance of a particular event that took place.

I am a more shy person and would rather send an email; however, a lot of the information was given in class and a lot of times i didn't feel it necessary to go into an office hour. I think you do a great job of making yourself available to the students, much more so than my other professors.

Yes I talked to you quite a few times after class. I just wanted to hear your opinion on political matters that were in the news or I had come across. I like to ask questions when I find someone who I believe is knowledgeable in a subject. I also asked you if you could summarize what you talked about in a lecture that I missed, and you gladly went through the lecture slides with me after class.

All of my questions and/or help I needed was able to be addressed over moodle. I knew when you were available and you also made it known that you were available after class to talk.

Everything was pretty clear with the syllabus and in-class instruction. never confused about any instructions.

We talked about Cincinnati and the connection between George Washington and the Roman dictator.

A lot of my questions were answered in class or by doing outside research. I also found that all my questions could be answered by the material provided for this class.

I made sure I kept on top of the work so I didn't feel the need to go to office hours. I did ask questions after class a few times and received helpful responses.

Very easy to talk to and approachable after class and is always willing to have a meaningful conversation.

I did not utilize the office hours because of the following reasons:

1. I was already earning a high grade in class and didn't need to seek help.

2. I used the Moodle messaging system for minor questions that arose during the term, and you responded sufficiently and promptly.

3. I am rather shy and also did not want to approach you alone although I might have come to your office to find out what questions I got wrong on the midterm if another student wanted to go with me.

It was not that you weren't available for me to talk to. I did not take advantage even though I should have. This was my first term in school, and now, at the end of the term, I can see I should have taken advantage of it. I would recommend to any new college student, it may be better to take a class that is not a hybrid class. It was very difficult to manage my time even though I attended the class regularly.

the interaction that i had was directly after class where we talked about the lectures for around 10 minutes. this was done quite often with myself and a few other students. i really was gratefull of your preparation you placed in the course made me want to do well since your were so professional.

It was very easy overall. Having them available online is a huge plus. Also having the lecture images available is great. Although, I felt like some images might have been missing or was not exactly the same (missing text maybe?) from class.

My only qualm was with the responses on forum. I didn't reply on two of them because the responses I got on my original post were discouraging.

I think the assignments offered and their grading is not only fair, but extremely east to accomplish. If someone did not complete said assignments then that is on them. A person would be foolish to not at least attempt to complete the assignments. 

Maybe less assignments a week, have them scattered.

I think online assignment is not hard to do. Like you said, it's a "gift" for students. 

I know some students who working hard will also think that way. 

I hope everyone do their best to learn every class. Ready to be a student any time during class and after class. 

Anyway, I think online homework is good.

The students who decided not to take the quizzes and opinion polls in my opinion missed out on earning easy points. With the quizzes you let us use both our book and our notes to take the quizzes we could find the answers to the questions in the book and our notes thats a win win in my book. The polls took less than a minute to complete and the ones who did not do them lost easy points.

i enjoyed those point "gifts", the students who didn't do it either aren't putting in the time or just betting that they can just test well and not do any class work.

I think they were great, it's hard to pass up easy points. I made sure I carved out enough time in my week to get them done and I only missed one quiz due to not having computer access and I unfortunatley forgort to change my Moddle profile picture. Attendance, missing one forum and the midterm were the only things that hurt me in the class.

too strict with due dates. I missed religion poll by a day and I lost the points? thats messed up man, get it together.

I did my best to answer them quickly when time allowed. The quizzes and opinion polls were extremely easy points, I'm unsure why anyone would pass them up unless they don't have reliable computer access (or possibly not worth the effort to some?)

Its very important to complete quizzes and polls, especially due to the fact that it is very easy.

I thought they were a great idea and it sucks some students didn't take advantage of it. I personally would have liked more opinion polls since we only two this term.

The quizzes and opinion polls were the easiest part of this class.

Honestly the problem here is not you, I do not mean to be a suck up, but that's the truth. The fact that we could take the quizzes unlimited times until and after a 70% and it counting as 100% if you do should be an easy A. Having simultaneously taken an online politics course that keeps the first score on online tests, I was so grateful for the unlimited attempt/score-boosting quizzes in this class. Also the fact that you can take the quizzes multiple times and that it tells you why you got the wrong ones wrong is an unbelievably useful resource!

I thought it was a "gift" for my grade because i always participated and the fact that you can take the quiz as many times as you want is something you won't find in any other class. Not only does it help your grade but it is a great way to study.

I felt like the opinion polls were easy to forget about and since you weighted it so heavy, it did hurt some students. 

You're in a community college, some are here only for the ride. Be pleased with the good students and don't worry about the bad.

This shocked me and drove me crazy. I think many of the students are young and lazy...and may be having their parents pay for school. ;)

No reason to not do the quizzes and polls. Very easy to do and you only need 70% for an A+. No excuse except being lazy.

I thought it was an incredible tool. I took the quizzes multiple times and saved the answers so I could use them as a study guide.

It was definitely an easy 20% grade especially the homework quizzes and polls. But, some forms were a bit hard on topics, but it was effective in the sense that it pushed me to learn about a range of topics. 

Be very direct in the first two weeks of class.

I fully used this "gift" and participated in every opinion poll and online quiz.  I think this is a great idea, and don't see why anyone would not want to take advantage of this semi-easy opportunity.  

I did not participate in most of the forums. I should have but I was one of the students this hurt. Looking back on this class,  I should have done so.

I agree that the internet is a good way for people who are shy to speck up or people to say things that they normally would be too scared to say, but that can also get bead real quick. I think you have to be careful because I could see some people saying things a lot more aggressive online than they would in class and plus there is always the problem of not being able to read someones emotions online.

I say keep it as it is. This is college, not high school. Those that refuse to participate need to realize they are no longer children and should not be coddled. We pay for this education, no one is forcing us to do anything.

I believe the forums worked fine and if you cared enough about your grade you would participate, I think your'e grading of some of the posts were a little harsh but that may just be your style of grading. Maybe make the prompts not so specific because I can see how students could get overwhelmed or confused. 

I didn't failed my forum 1-3. I know it is easier for me to fail, but not to pass.

I think it is a interesting and absolutely worth my time and effort.

I really enjoyed posting in the forums and hearing back from my fellow students on what I posted. The materials that you put with each forum made it easier for me to come up with responses for each forum. Those that did not participate in posting in the forums could easily have done so. All it took was to read the materials provided and to get information from either the book or from sites that related to the topic and site your sources.

i didn't find them interesting and it's hard to get involved or understand something when it's boring. The comic one was fun, and forum 2.

Even with the "how forums are graded" page it was still confusing what exactly our responses should have looked like, especially in the first forum

I think over all it was good. I think it was hard to see that a lot of people weren't participating because we were put into concise groups.  I think the scoring system is good, its fair without making it to easy. The changes in topics were also good, keeping things fresh and adding stickynotes to my textbook and interesting internet searches to my browser history. I don't think the deadline for making your first is necsecary though. On a couple of the forums I made the majority of my posts in the last few days just becasue it fit well with the rest of my classes. According to the scores I recived on most of them I don't think it mattered when I entered the discussion. My favorite forum was definately the cartoon one because a lot of the time it made me compare and contrast the historic relevance of the cartoons to contemporary issues were seeing today. Over all this was my favorite part of this class. This may be because I enjoy putting refined thoughts down on paper, but I also loved seeing what kind of learning experience my classmates were having too.

I feel like this is way better than participating in class. I have a lot to say but I usually don't, and these forums gave me a chance to speak up. I thought the first two forums were a bit boring... but I really liked the last two, especially forum three. The group sizes were just right and it was worth my time!

I found some of the topics really confusing.

I really like the discussion forums because without reading into other students inputs i don't think i would have as good of an understanding of the subjects as I do, it also forced me to engage which in a sense forces me to learn the material more.

The forums were good. It allowed me to learn from what others shared. Sometimes there is alot of reading to do. Deadlines werent a issue. Scoring is hard to predict so you must post alot. Topic change is good. Group sizes were fine. Yes it was worth the effort and time

Having too few forums makes each one weigh more (grade wise.) I also felt like they were mini essays and not so much as ‘conversations.’ I understand the need to cite sources (which seemed like a lot of students failed to do anyway,) but I think it intimidates students. If more participation is what you’re looking for, maybe have more forums (one a week,) and one clear topic/question. I tried to explain my problem with Forum 3, but I think it just boiled down to having a broad main question, many mini questions that had to be clarified on the side and (me personally,) a tough time reading the two essays.

I feel like you score extremely difficult as on some of the forums it was hard to write multiple in depth responses to the material. I think there needs to be more materials and different forms of every material. I thought forum 4 was really interesting and the other forums provided fake enthusiasm.

I know I personally didn't post very much in the forum at first. 

I personally hated the forums. The scores were really harsh and although you can post unlimitedly it was difficult to earn all the points because a lot of other people in the forums didn't post much to respond to. I didn't participate in the last 2 forums very much because I tried to participate in the first 2 and I got shit scores so I concluded that I could do it or not do it and receive the same score.

I found that participating in the forums was actually quite enjoyable. I appreciate discussing topics I am interested in and many of the prompts were engaging enough to inspire good conversation. Though I found the required 6 posts completely manageable and rather enjoyable, I can at some level empathize with those that found that to be a daunting task. At least for students who have busy school/work schedules trying to get six posts in throughout the week is likely difficult, especially if they are not sure how the scoring works. I know that you make resources available to students in regard to how things are scored, and unfortunately it is a common practice among students (I have found) to avoid looking at materials that seem extra from the course work.

For me I would say that I learned a lot from the forums, primarily from the detailed resources and prompt that led the conversation, but certainly also from reading my classmates' opinions and responding to them.

I think some students may forget about the forum throughout the week after they have made their first post or just get a little bit lazy with it. I think it is definitely a fair way for us to gain points and also participate in a discussion as a class.

Overall l found the topics to be good choices. Specifically the political cartoon topic. There were many viewpoints and thoughts to bounce off one another.

I thought the topics were too dense and confusing to make a valid argument for the cases and the grading was tough. I didn't find it worth my time. 

I really like the forum. I like to debate but also like to have time to think out what I want to say. I think it must be hard to pick forum materials because you don't want subjects that people have already taken a hard stance on. Also if words like progressive or conservative, are in the title people automatically take a side without even reading the material. They instantly assume that they are on a side before they even figure out weather the word is meaning the same thing they think it means. This class has shown me how smart both sides of an argument can be and how absolutely uninformed and foolish others students can be.

This isn't an area that I have aced and wasnt because of lack of effort. On average I spent a few hours per week on the forums reading different views, researching, and forming my opinion. I did enjoy the forums but thought the grading was a little harsh. It did help me have a better understanding on the topics being discussed. However the amount of time I put into it and the grade outcome was frustrating. I did reach out to the instructor and got constructive feedback which I appreciate. But I decided to continue to put in 3-4 hours into it so I still had time to focus on my other classes as well.

Scoring posts 1-3 scale shouldn't be a thing. either you get a point or don't and 3 points total to get an A, 2 for a B, and 1 for a C. character cap on the forum posts so we don't have to read entire essays to get somebody's opinion. Should only be like a paragraph.

Sometimes the reading was really thick and a chore to get through. I didn't really participate in the first two mostly because I hate talking to people I don't know. The only reason I did in the last two was because I realized how my grade had suffered. I also didn't actually have real opinions on some of the topics, so I had to force myself to come to a conclusion once or twice. (In the sense that I was taking both sides in and didn't strongly lean either way.) That's an issue that is within me however, and I didn't have a problem with the way the actual forum was set up, in terms of grading, topic change, and separation into groups. 

The scoring was kind of odd because we don't really know what exactly he's scoring us on and our scores don't come out until after the assignment is done. 

The topics were challenging but interesting.

The timeline and deadlines were good. 

Too much material!

On most forums I got full credit. I didn't do one of them because I had a heavy workload with other classes that week and had to compromise on something. I think it might be interesting to either put everyone in the same group or separate by class, that way we'd know the people responding to us because they're in our class. And we could continue the conversation in person if desired. I didn't recognize most of the people in my forum group.

Everything was challenging but in a good, positive way, it required you to think and i think that could turn people off but it is great for people who are actually interested in learning and being challenged.

I thought the forums were a good idea, and I certainly spoke up more in them (because my grade was affected) than I did in class and would have if I did not need to for my grade.

Yes, the forums were worth my time and effort.  I gave them a lot of time and effort and, so far, have received good grades on them that reflected how hard I worked.

forums were good however i would have liked them to be open for a few weeks on each topic so we could spend more time on our posts instead of trying to cram in several responses to ensure full credit.

I thought it was good. 

I felt they were a great way to discuss the topics at hand with other students but making 6 posts sometimes was hard when there wasn't much discussion going on and sometimes 6 was to much. Four would of been better with all the other classes we sometimes have to take.

Forum were ok.

Having the online option was nice because It was very inexpensive! Having textbook quotes in the slides and questioning the textbook was very important because it showed that you read them too and enough to where you can pick out differences in this years and last.

I personally felt like I got more out of class participation and listening to you speak than I did from the book. Granted I have prior knowledge of the course work, so the book is probably more important to those that may not have a background in US history. the book itself however was informative and fairly well written.

I like this book. Not perfect but we still can get the information we want in this book.

I was satisfied with the quality of the textbook its self and I learned things from it that I hadn't before. You did a pretty good job with incorporating pages from the book into your lectures.

I think that it was used appropriately, Im glad I was able to rent it though because it was pretty expensive. I like the style its written in as well, the text isn't too dense and the headlines are easy to find. That being said however it was often hard to find a lot of the small critical details required to answer the quiz questions because of the size of a lot of the paragraphs. The chapters are good size, they include plenty of relevant details but don't overload you with too much infomation making it impossible to pick out whats important. I also think you did a good job incorporating the text book info into our lectures.

As far as textbooks go it was a better one. It sucks to sit down and read a textbook for 2 hours though, eventually you lose interest. The online availability of the individual chapters was great!

I think that the textbook was basically the center of gravity for this course, which turned out great because I enjoyed reading it and I felt it gave me a good deal of new knowledge and insight that I lacked before attending this class. The classroom sessions were important as well, but I rank them one stage lower because admittedly the raw information is coming from the book. The class sessions were more about tempering the knowledge that the book offered by promoting critical thinking concerning interpreting scholarly works and reviewing the biggest points covered in the book and reinforcing that knowledge with expertly tailored video clippings from documentaries. The class time was definitely used well, the conversations brought up were nothing but helpful in solidifying the book's message, while simultaneously warning us about believing too securely the statements or phrasing that the book states too boldly.

Too little textbook involvement, the readability was dense and dull, but did an ok job of referencing quotes from the textbook in class. 

As I said in the other questionnaire I found the first couple of chapters not nearly as important  as the later part of the book. I would have tried two cut down those two chapters into about one weeks worth of material so we could have more time for the parts of history that actually involve America. The Inca and Aztecs are important but are they truly necessary for an American history course? 

I liked how you pointed out the bias of the book. I rolled my eyes at quite a few spots when I was reading that book.

I learned more in class than the textbook because he helped me understand the material while the text book was sort of broad about the subjects.

It didn't feel like an optional read even though it could be dry at times. I thought it was utilized well in class.

I was very satisfied with the quality/readability of the textbook.  I could fully understand the textbook, yet it was educational and professionally informative.  I was very satisfied with the extent to which the instructor incorporated the textbook into the course.  I felt that it was the proper amount, and I felt satisfied that I could buy the sixth edition instead of the seventh for price reasons.

It was difficult sometimes to read in-between the lines and find the answers to some of the questions for the quizzes. Otherwise, I think the textbook was fine.

reading is not a strong suite of mine so i had a hard time keeping up with the amount of reading however i don't know if this would be the case for the average student

I would say you need to be ready to focus and attend class every time. You can't get behind because your grade will suffer and if you need to talk to the instructor, Escobar respects clear communication and integrity. I would also say that you shouldn't just decide to not participate in some parts of the class just because you don't want to. Being actively engaged in the material is of upmost importance, you might be suprised by how much you learn and what things peak your interest.

You will develop a love for history! or if you already do love history, you will love this professor. 

At first I was sceptical but it got a lot easier as the term went on. 

It depends on what you want to get out of the class, and how engaged you are willing to be, because this class is fairly fun and not too difficult but it also requires you to engage more than other classes in my opinion

If they need it for their major, sure take it. 

I would say it’s a good class and the instructor is great. However, if you find religion boring or uninteresting, the first few weeks will be rough.

It was a class in which I learned a lot, however it is a lot of work and reading.

Take the course. The instruction is great and lectures interesting. Instructor is clear in expectations. Just participate.

I would say they should take it because the instructor knows his stuff and provides you with everything you need to pass the class with a decent grade.

Escobar is funny but very opinionated. I never had a problem with anything we discussed, even though some of it was very sensitive material to some people because it was discussed with respect and honesty. Overall, Escobar is a cool dude and I would take another class if I knew it wasn't going to be history

With him as an insturctor yes. he is a very reasonable instructor. Is hard but not impossible

Well given that I have never had a history course with another history teacher at Lane and that You were an excellent teacher... if this said student was adequately achieving and prepared and had an interest in the class subject, then I would certainly make the recommendation.

For someone who I thought would be trampled in the course or who had no interest in history I would not recommend a two hundred level history class.

I would recommend the course. My number one priority for classes is a great instructor that's passionate. Escobar didn't lack any passion and kept me wanting to hear more. Like I mentioned before I felt the forum Grading was a little tough but the quizzes and attendance grading were easy to get an A+ so I feel he gave the students plenty of opportunity to get a good grade even if forums or writing maybe might not be your strong point.

If you like history and want to dive into the content about the foundation of america it's a good class. It is boring at times and some of the material won't really help me in the future, again how many bales of cotton there were. There are also students who love to debate, especially about pointless things. So get ready for that.

Well it depends who asks me. If one of my friends who I know struggles in school did then I would not recommend it. However, if one of my friends who is more diligent in their schoolwork asked about it then yes I would recommend it.

They should take it if they are interested in the topic because there is a lot of information supplied in such a short amount of time that it can be overwhelming. 

It honestly depends on how much you have on your plate.

I really liked professor Escobars teaching style and his enthusiasm for the subject.

First of all, I would say that overall, I enjoyed the course and the teacher/teaching style.  

I would let the student know that I heard from a previous LCC instructor that Joe Escobar taught at more of a high school level than a college level, but I thought the teaching level was appropriate.  I would recommend to work hard, meet the deadlines, and participate fully in every opportunity to earn points!

I would also let the student know that a R-rated clip was shown in class without previous warning, but would also say that the teacher later provided warnings before other graphic clips and was very encouraging, supportive, and listened to suggestions without becoming upset.

You were a great teacher. I was not a great student in this class. I will probably end up retaking this course but I will do a traditional style instead of Hybrid.

Kahoots would be a very fun game to play in class and would help study for quizzes/exams

I think finding some tool that helps consolidate the most important facts onto a timeline would be an improvment. That would make it easier to find critical details when you need to go back and reference something from a previous chapter. Either to study for an exam or use as a good source for the forum.

Plotly - a free graph designing website

Pixlr - a free high-quality online paint program/image editor.

I think that between these two questionaires you've got it pretty well covered, Escobar. I feel like I've given you plenty of relevant feedback on the course as a whole. I wish that I was not in the current circumstances in regards to my family this week and the past few weeks so I could've devoted more of my time to the class. Either way I enjoyed the class very much and I'm glad I got the oppurtunity to participate.

Not everyone has access to a smart phone or mobile device. However, during my first term (Winter term 2014, Writing 121 class,) the instructor had all students check out an iPad for the term. She only used it in class once or twice, but I think students enjoyed it. So if you plan on requiring access to one IN CLASS, that is always an option (unless they stopped letting students check them out since then.)

You forgot to ask students why they are so incapable of following simple instructions that earn them easy points.

The idea of mandating mobilization of personal computers, to me, does not sound like a good idea. I personally own a laptop, which is mobile... but it is old now and it turns off the second (literally) that it is unplugged. In order for me to bring my computer to class and use it effectively I would have had to have been able to plug my computer in.

the only thing i sometimes had trouble with was the pace of the course. The lectures moved very quickly which i understood why, we have a limited amount of time. But they were very fast paced sometimes and i had trouble keeping up.

grading is uneven. all A's and get one F now failing the class.

The forums were graded to harshly, and the topics were very hard to understand. 

So last spring term when I filled out this survey I was very high flying in my praise. I hope I didn't sound foolish but I was tired of liberal non-analyzing professors who seemed to have absolutely no knowledge of the political and historical ideas they were talking about. One teacher I had said that during the middle ages all the scientists were perpetually drunk and that is why they mad incorrect scientific discoveries, and this professor wasn't joking. She believed what she said. So I was very flowery in my praises because you were one of the first professors I felt had some common sense. Thanks for anther very interesting class.

My only recommendation is, don't listen to any foolish recommendations.

Forums shouldn't be such a big part of the grade. Like said earlier ever since it's been moved up not everybody is participating still. And it shouldn't be for paragraphs and paragraphs for an opinion. You should put a character CAP on the forum so posts aren't as long. I feel the longer they are the harder they are to read and understand.

People in the forums need to be more focused on creating a dialogue and less focused on padding up their word count in a thinly veiled attempt to impress you. Figure out how to do that and forums will become significantly less annoying for everyone involved.
