<text>What was the temperance movement? How did it affect American society in the early national period?</text>
<answer>The temperance movement of the early national period was a reaction to the growth in the use (and abuse) of alcohol that characterized early nineteenth-century society. The early national period was a time of profound change: market development, industrial growth, and political splintering. These factors exacerbated the dramatic growth in alcoholism. The social repercussions of alcohol abuse--domestic violence, poor work habits, and crime--were compounded by the medical repercussions--mental illness, physical ailments, and even death. Many believed that men addicted to alcohol could not be good republican citizens. Hence, the advocates of temperance believed that abstinence from the use of alcohol altogether would uphold republican values and would make possible the practices necessary to uphold a virtuous society.Very influential in the temperance movement were religious evangelists, like Lyman Beecher and Charles Finney, who argued that alcohol was a master controlling a slave (the drinker), and preventing him from attaining salvation. By 1835, the American Temperance Society, a mixture of Whigs and evangelists, claimed over 1.5 million members. In addition, working-class organizations such as the Washington Temperance Society joined the attack on alcohol (although they never allied themselves with their more conservative middle-class compatriots), arguing that drink undermined the important role that the worker played in American politics. These combined movements were successful, since the annual consumption of alcohol dropped by more than one-half in the 1840s.</answer>

<text>Describe the various approaches to prison reform during the period from 1820 to 1840. What were the goals and successes of those who wished to reform America's prisons?</text>
<answer>Before the 1820s and the market revolution, many Americans saw crime, vice, and poverty as a sign of God's retribution on sinful people. In the period following the dramatic social changes of these years, however, many Americans increasingly saw crime as a product of circumstance, the result of abusive parents, poor schooling and upbringing, and limited opportunities. Reformers hoped to place criminals in a controlled and regimented setting in order to teach them the good middle-class values of discipline and work, and make them better citizens.The "Auburn System" stands out as the culmination of reformist ideas regarding convicted criminals. This system was designed to reform criminals as well as reduce expenses, since prisons were involved in various types of outwork production. Prisoners slept in solitary cells and, when together, were forbidden to speak to one another at any time. Democrats tended to favor a harsher, more profitable system, the best example being Sing Sing (Ossining). Punishment, not reward (as put forward by the Auburn System) was favored. Whether either system was successful is unclear, since there was no noticeable reduction in crime (although neither system claimed to act as a deterrent) in the years following their introduction.</answer>

<text>Examine the movement for public-school reform in the United States.</text>
<answer>Before the early nineteenth century, common schools, or public schools, were entirely matters of the local community. Few states mandated that children had to receive an education--Massachusetts being one of the most significant exceptions. Even in Massachusetts, though, the matter of education was a local concern--a community could choose to supply a school for at least some months of the year, or it had the option of paying a fine. Not until the 1830s did both major political parties, Democrats and Whigs, concede that a public education was a proper function of government, since an educated citizenry was also a more virtuous and healthy one. How the citizen was to be educated, however, still led to disagreement.Horace Mann and many Whig school reformers felt that students should be educated to respect authority, in addition to learning to read and write. Of special importance to school reformers was teaching the values and beliefs of the new emerging market society. Because of this, there was a middle-class bias to the school curriculum. Often, books that were read and lessons that were studied emphasized the prevailing Protestant middle-class ideology of mid-nineteenth-century America. The public school system, at least in the minds of the middle class, was not to be a democratizing experience, but an elevating one, for the increasingly Catholic working class.</answer>

<text>Explore the condition of free African Americans in northern society during the early national period.</text>
<answer>Before the American Revolution, many northern cities (and some rural areas for that matter), had large numbers of black slaves. Following the Revolution, because of both ideological and economic changes, the North began to move away from slavery. The earliest manumission societies evolved during the Revolution itself and, by the 1820s, only a few hundred African Americans were still enslaved. During this period, although racism existed, African Americans occupied an important position in the social and economic sphere of many northern cities. They were craftsmen and skilled artisans, as well as day laborers, dock workers, and cartmen.From the 1820s onward, however, significant changes began to take place in the urban economies of the Northeast. First, the movement toward a market economy spurred interest in commercial development, creating opportunities in port cities (New York, Boston, and Philadelphia). Second, an increasing number of white wage-workers began to edge black workers out of jobs because of discrimination in hiring practices and, finally, the use of violence. 1834 was the date of the first major race riot in American history, and the issue was jobs. Free blacks also saw the franchise, their political voice, being taken away from them during the 1830s, as the Democratic Party became the party of race-baiting. Black children were excluded from public schools, and blacks were excluded from many white churches.</answer>

<text>Analyze the antislavery movement in the United States in the years following the 1830s.</text>
<answer>Before the 1830s, the antislavery movement in the United States was limited to very few organizations and individuals. The two most significant antislavery groups were the Quaker Church and the American Colonization Society. The Colonization Society was a somewhat awkward organization whose goal was to transport freed slaves back to Africa. Neither organization was very successful in opposing slavery. During the 1820s and 1830s, however, at the height of the market transformation of American society, a new and far more significant challenge to the institution of slavery developed--the American Anti-Slavery Society with William Lloyd Garrison at its helm.Garrison and others were clear about their desires. Dismissing the feeble call for "gradual emancipation," Garrison demanded full and immediate abolition of slavery, or "immediatism." Immediatism was a new and radical demand and dramatically altered the landscape of the antislavery movement. Within a few years, several hundred thousand middle-class artisans, businessmen, factory workers, and commercial farmers from the Northeast and Northwest joined the antislavery crusade. This upswell of support for abolitionism was directly related to the rise of commercial capitalism and the possibilities of "free labor."</answer>

<text>Examine the development of the Women's Rights Movement in post-1820 America.</text>
<answer>In the early nineteenth century, the role of women in American society changed significantly. More lower-class women and girls were entering the workforce and experiencing wage and job discrimination. Women could not own property, vote, control their pay, or obtain fair divorce decrees. In middle-class families, women were viewed as moral arbiters, nurturers, and homemakers. Their religious sentiments encouraged them to participate in the major reform movements of the era. Women were active in combating prostitution, alcoholism, and slavery. As they fought to improve the lives of others, many women activists realized that their own rights were being violated. The abolitionist movement especially served as a training ground for feminists. The inequalities of slavery were similar in many ways to the inequalities of gender. The official beginning of the Women's Rights Movement was the Seneca Falls Woman's Rights Convention of 1848. The members of the convention issued a paraphrased version of the Declaration of Independence titled "Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions." They asserted their unalienable rights of life, liberty, property, and happiness and maintained that "all men and women were created equal." Elizabeth Cady Stanton and other activists organized and worked steadily from 1848 on to obtain recognition of the citizenship rights of American women. The franchise was the most controversial of the feminists issues and many men responded by ridiculing and insulting the "unsexual women" who made such outrageous demands.</answer>

<question type='sa' question-id='136'>
<text>Describe the southern reaction to the middle-class social reforms of the early nineteenth century.</text>
<answer>Southern society was patriarchal, agricultural, and conservative. The white-male-dominated southern culture rebuffed outside influences, ideas, and interference. Southerners were proud of their traditions and suspicious of expensive social-improvement concepts. Unlike the North, the South had a homogeneous population united by common bonds of ideology and family ties. Even when state legislatures promoted plans for public schools, local authorities limited course offerings and attendance requirements. Schools were not deemed necessary for economic success in the rural cotton culture of the southern states.Southern prisons, though patterned after the Auburn system, emphasized economy and punishment not rehabilitation. Old Testament visions of corporal punishments such as branding, beating, and execution were favored by southern law-enforcement officials and the general public. The prisoner-leasing system was widely used as a means of making prisons cost effective.The temperance movement did make some inroads in southern society. Methodist and Baptist preachers warned against the evils of alcohol, gambling, and dancing. Many men cut back on--or abstained from--the consumption of alcohol. The Washington Temperance Society was influential in many areas of the South. Temperance, however, did not become a matter of public policy in the South as it did in the North. Southerners regarded legislative prohibition as an unwarranted intrusion by the state into a purely private and personal matter. In general, southerners opposed any change that undermined the prevailing power structure. Most of the reform movements originated in the North and therefore seemed to be an attempt to remake southern society according to a Yankee model.</answer>
