The 1830s to the 1850s saw the largest influx of immigrants to the United States come from Germany and Ireland, and both of these groups came into conflict with the native-born Americans.. Because of the revolutions and political unrest in Germany, the German immigration increased. These Germans tended to settle in agricultural areas in the center of the country. On the other hand, the Irish immigrants tended to settle in the cities. What was one of the main causes of the accelerated Irish emigration? {*potato famine*} [html]
Until the 1820s, the roads were seen as the main source of transportation in the United States. A new infrastructural development called canals emerged during this time period. Canals caused the price of transportation to decline drastically. This not only helped Americans to trade with Europe, but it had a greater impact on the internal trade within the United States itself. The advances made in technology continued with the invention of the _______________,which replaced horsepower in both the development of the railroads and riverboats. {*steam engine*} [html]
The transportation revolution accompanied the market revolution and both spurred the westward development of the United States. A technological revolution also occurred, especially the use and expansion of the telegraph. Americans of the era were obsessed with news that could now be received from all parts of the country. Interestingly enough, steam powered press was another invention that increased the production of newspapers while lowering the cost at the same time. Newspapers of the day could be sold for one ____________ each and both the Democrat and Whig political parties could reach out to a much larger number of people to inform them of their party positions on issues of the day. {*penny*} [html]
The northern and southern sections of the country developed in very different ways. In particular, technological innovations and factories had a greater impact on the North, since it was more industrialized, than in the South which remained largely rural and agrarian. The Industrial Revolution caused the wages of workers to go down, especially the wages of unskilled workers. It even turned many skilled workers into unskilled workers by separating their work into individual tasks which could be more quickly and easily accomplished. Which industry, in particular, did this video use as an example of this effect and outcome. {*shoe*} [html]
Both industrial revolution videos agree about which group of people were the first to be used and recruited for large-scale labor operations in the textile mills. On a positive note, many women who worked in the textile mills experienced expanded life choices at a time when those choices were open only to men. But they worked hard, from sun up to sun down, and the work was dangerous, always running the risk of being injured if caught in machinery. {TRUE} [html]
The influx of immigration during these years provided the United States with the labor force needed for the Industrial Revolution. Irish immigrants in particular took the lowest paid, lowest skilled jobs. The men dug canals and the women worked in textiles. Initially, these jobs have been seen as temporary. However discrimination and economic necessity made these lower paying jobs a permanent fixture in American society. The creation of a poor, underprivileged, and exploited underclass of people resulted from this process by which factory owners extracted the greatest amount of labor for the least expensive price. This was the painful reality in the early period of industrialization and it was never addressed, improved, or rectified by the political, economic or societal leaders during the entire 19th Century. {FALSE} [html]
The new industrialized labor system was opposed by the formerly skilled workers. Instead of being independent contractors, they were now subject to market forces such as answering to the demands and discipline of an employer and being subject to changes in the market. Having little control over price and demand, these workers could be fired more quickly and easily. These changes in the nature of work and compensation would lead future labor leaders to complain about workers living lives of “wage __________”. Thus began the earliest attempts of workers to form labor unions.{*slavery*} [html]
Many Americans today believe that their rights cannot be taken away and they are guaranteed by the government and the Bill of Rights. However, a careful study of our nation’s history, reveals that when considering the rights of workers, they have always been resisted to varying levels and degrees over the years. For example, the right of workers to _____________ for better pay and working conditions did not exist during the early years of the industrial revolution. In the earliest confrontations, the workers had little power and were taken to court by their employers and charged with conspiracy. Although working conditions and pay would eventually be made better over the course of time, workers would have to wait for their rights and legal recognition by the government and their employers. {*strike*}
