Student Evaluation of Instruction & Course

ALL online courses at Lane are supposed to have a student evaluation component. While there may be some similarities, this specific student evaluation you are reading now is NOT a standardized list of questions that is used in every class, but is created by me and unique to this class.

I am genuinely interested in creating the best online experience that I can, and I am certain there are ways I might be able to improve this course. With that in mind, I would appreciate your honest, thoughtful responses to the following questions.

The only module in Moodle which allows for completely anonymous student participation (even though you are logged into Moodle with your L#) is this Questionnaire Activity, specifically set to anonymous mode, which I have done.  Moodle will record a submission "score" of "1" when you submit this survey.  That is all I will know... who completed it and who did not.  I will not be able to match the answers to the students who submitted them.

If you complete this survey by the 11:55pm, Saturday, March 14 deadline, I will add 1% to your final class grade for the term. I hope you take advantage of this opportunity.

NOTE: Every question (except #1) requires some sort of answer to be able to submit this survey.

1

This survey IS anonymous.  Several students in past terms have suggested that I include an optional "name" field in the survey for students who DID want me to know who had written the responses.  So, leave this field empty to remain anonymous, or enter your name if you'd prefer me to know who you are..

Since this is an accelerated 5 week long summer course, which required a full 10 week term of materials to be included, I made the decision to use the Cengage MindTap platform.  It allowed students to work at their own pace.  Being an online class, all required materials were included in MindTap, including the textbook.  MindTap had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback.  All together, the MindTap activities counted for a very substantial portion (60%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks.  On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.

I plan to require my future online students to purchase and use MindTap.  Please use this space to provide me with any relevant feedback on your MindTap experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific.  I'd appreciate your honesty.

How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook?  How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)

Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $80 price you paid, whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature (flashcards?).

Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)

Respondent Response

It was very helpful! Some of the questions were a bit difficult but maybe I just needed to study more.

None

Very satisfied with MindTap. Everything that was on the study guide could be easily found in the textbook section. Taking down the first 4 chapters after the midterm was helpful in organization. The tests and assignments could have more to do with the study guide, but it does help for the overall understanding.

I think the MindTap application is pretty straightforward, although I really wish there was a CTRL-F function in the book. It would have made it a lot easier.  I think I didn't take the time to take advantage of the entire application, that was my fault though.

I've used many different textbooks in my college career and agree with the aforementioned entirely. I felt as if the $80 was nothing extraordinary - especially given that it was the only textbook. Definitely one of the best online textbooks/platforms that I've ever used. I'm a big fan.

I thought $80 was too expensive for an online book.... I usually buy used textbooks so this is one of if not the most expensive textbook I've had to buy yet. The other frustrating thing was how you don't even get full access of the book, just selected chapters for the class or the chance to keep the book for further usage after the class, as well as chapters we already did disappearing so you can't even go back to something you read a couple weeks ago, NOT COOL. There were some aspects that were nicer than a physical paper book, but I also felt like sometimes the paragraphs would repeat themselves just adding to more unnecessary reading.

The book was a very easy to follow and helpful.

Mindtap is good as long as the internet and cengage wants to work correctly. I don't think some of the question s always directly reflected the readings

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/MindTap on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises and the chapter test in a single day.  In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week.  One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred policy would be to include several due dates (for the Check Your Understanding activities) throughout the week.  I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or may be just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for the Chapter Tests.

For some students, more deadlines would force them to participate more during the week and procrastinate less.  For others, due to family, work, or other obligations, midweek deadlines might impose true obstacles.  Please use this space to explain your support or opposition to the proposal to add midweek deadlines to this course.

Respondent Response

I am actually not sure because if for others something difficult comes up and they are unable it will hurt their grade.

I am a full time RN and single parent, adult learner and work 12 hour days. Because of this I have limited availability throughout the week and often had to finish everything in one day. The flexibility  an online course offers is why I take it. While it may not be ideal, it is the only option for me and I assume, for others as well. Please don’t micromanage by imposing multiple due dates.

I would help my understanding of the material better but I prefer in an online course that everything is due at the end of the week.

I think you summarized it pretty well in this sentence. I decided to take an online class due to other obligations I had throughout the week, but I fully agree that it is tough to cram the entirety of a chapter in two days.

I can see the increase of due dates correlate with a lower average class grade. An increase in the due dates makes the flexibility and overall reasons for an oncorrelate with a lower average class grade. An increase in the due dates makes the flexibility and overall reasons for an online class less desirable.

Yeah, one deadline a week to do two chapters is enough, adding the pressure of multiple mid week deadlines would be extra stressful.

I agree that midweek deadlines might impose true obstacles, because they take place without free time, while weekends give us extra free time to do homework.

im a single mom of two who goes to school full time and works full time so I don't have all the time in the world to dedicate to being in a class atmosphere. midweek would have forced me to try and access it more.

Is there any other type of  smartphone app or web-based tool or service that you know of or have used in another class (OTHER than the shared Google Doc we used for the midterm and final study lists) that:

#1 would be cool and/or useful for me to implement for future students in this history class?
- OR -
#2 might be helpful for learning or studying historical information covered in this class?

I am not sure but thought that it was all helpful!

I used quizlet to make test for myself. You can use the study guide while you read and take a direct quote from the material and use it as your answer for the study guide.

I would prefer if the videos were you talking. I could not get through more than a minute of any of them

One thing that threw/caught me off guard was the intensity of the five week course. I wasn't necessarily a big fan as I really enjoy the process of learning history and like the typical pace that it's offered at. I believe that the intense pace resulted in a significantly lower grade for me, which even I was surprised at.

Midterms and finals be after the full weeks of study and not during the week before the deadlines. Especially the final, the final should be like all the other finals during finals week so students can get the proper time to finish the weekly lessons AND have time to study.

Why don't you raise the percentage of extra credit project, and also reduce the percentage of mid term and final term exams may be to 15% each?

I feel like moodle has its own issues so having cengage was very helpful
